Throne of the Crescent Moon & Nintendo Power Retrospectives Part 19

<p>In a sudden failure of judgement (and planning), I’ve realized that I’ve forgotten to post last week’s video on the site. So, I’ll make up for it by posting last week’s video alongside this week’s one. Enjoy!<span id="more-2632"></span><span class='embed-youtube' style='text-align:center; display: block;'><iframe class='youtube-player' type='text/html' width='585' height='360' src='http://www.youtube.com/embed/P2JHPZH9OsA?version=3&rel=1&fs=1&showsearch=

Movie Review ? Three Days of the Condor

Get Three Days of the Condor from Amazon.com I enjoy spy thrillers. Marathon Man, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Smiley’s People, Sneakers, Spy Game, etc, have all stuff I’ve enjoyed. I bring up Spy Game, because it was my first exposure to Redford in a spy film, which in turn leads me to this week’s review ? Three Days of the Condor, which features Redford acting alongside Max Von Sydow in a spy thriller set in the US. The plot follows Joseph Turner, code name ?Condor,? an analyst for the CIA. Wh

Microsoft E3 2011 Press Confrence Recap

I’ve set up a Blip.tv channel recently (which is also why I changed the name of the blog), and with my acquisition of a webcam and lapel mike, you can look forward to seeing more video content on the site soon. First up are my thoughts on Microsoft’s E3 press conference. Filed under: Video games Tagged: E3, E3 2011, Electronic Entertainment Expo, Microsoft Source

Custom Music Game Roundup

I have a lot of music on my computer. A lot of music. Currently, iTunes says that I have enough music to play for 8.9 days straight. Consequently, I like games that let me bring my music into the games in means that matter, by procedurally generating content based on my music, and I’ve purchased a lot of games that let me do this. I’m going to call these ?Custom Music Games?, because ?Music-Based Procedurally Generated Games? is clunky as well. However, such games don’t lend themselves well to

Quality Control ? Casino Kid 2

Get Casino Kid 2 from eBay Normally, for my Quality Control picks, I don’t like to pick sequels to stuff I haven’t played. For Casino Kid 2, I decided to make an exception, as from a storyline standpoint, I’m not missing anything. Plus, as I’ve been playing a few Texas Hold ‘Em Poker games, recently, so I’d like to see what a NES gambling game is like. The Premise: Casino Kid, the protagonist of the last game, has beaten all the best gamblers in the United States. However, the world remains.

Where I Read ? Electronic Gaming Monthly #90

So, this week we have another gap in my EGM archive, carrying us from #84 last week all the way to issue #90, for January of 1997. Our cover story for this issue is the upcoming home console release of Mechwarrior 2. We also get an ad for the home console release of Tekken 2 for the Playstation. Our editorial column for this issue is from Joe Funk, about the Battle of Hoth level in Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire for the N64. I cannot argue with that. I can try, but there wouldn’t be any

Book Review: Empire of the Imagination

I don’t know if you know this, but I like tabletop RPGs. I really like tabletop RPGs. So, when I learned of the massive amount of scholarship going around RPGs and the history thereof, I got really excited. Though not the first book on the topic that I picked up (that being Of Dice And Men, which I reviewed in the fourth issue of my fanzine) this is one of the first, and one that warrants some discussion. Empire of the Imagination is a biography of E. Gary Gygax – co-creator of Dungeons and Dra

Quality Control ? Axelay

Get Axelay from eBay When it comes to reviewing the also-rans in Nintendo Power, the reasons for picking that game as a Quality Control title are different from the reasons why I’d pick a game that was featured prominently in the magazine (say, with a guide). With the games that get a guide, I’m looking for a game that’s generally not a classic, and attempting to see if it was worth the consumer’s time. The assumption behind this is that the customer is more likely to buy a game that gets a gui

Video Game Review ? Record of Agarest War

After a long break between video game reviews, I’m back with a review of Record of Agarest War for the Xbox 360 and PS3. I’m also using a new video editing program, Sony Vegas, for this video, so bear with me as I work on improving the sound and picture quality in future installments. Comic Review ? Ultimate Six

Get Ultimate Six from Amazon.com I’ve been catching up on my Ultimate Spider-Man, for reasons various and sundry. The volumes that haven’t been reviewed at Bureau42, I’ve reviewed here. However, this storyline – the introduction of the Ultimate Universe’s version of the Sinister Six, has been reviewed there. Thus, I’m taking my review of this storyline to my blog here, so I can kind of review it in my own little way, with a bit of an aside about the state of your friendly neighborhood Spider-Ma

Where I Read ? Nintendo Power #32

On to Nintendo Power’s 5th anniversary. As a reminder, this is not the fifth year Nintendo published a magazine. Prior to this they had the Nintendo Fun Club newsletter – which I will get to in due time. Our cover game is Super Castlevania IV for the SNES, which is, I believe, the first time a third party SNES game has made the cover of Nintendo Power. With the magazine’s 5th year, we’re now also getting a new comic strip, adapting the Legend of Zelda. They’re also bundling one of four st

Movie Review ? The Punisher: War Zone

Get The Punisher: War Zone from Amazon.com I have a love-hate relationship with Frank Castle. As someone who got into the pulps, especially characters like The Shadow, before he really got into comics, I never really had a problem with a comic book character who killed criminals. Thus, the Punisher appealed to me a little, as the character had a lot in common with characters like The Shadow, in terms of being a grim or mostly silent vigilante who gunned down gangsters. While I recognized that h

Music Review ? Pat Boone: In A Metal Mood

Get "In A Metal Mood" at Amazon.com So, on several occasions previously, my Dad had mentioned that Pat Boone had recorded an album of metal covers. Well, today I finally got around to hunting down the album in the library, and I gave it a listen. First – The Track List You’ve Got Another Think Comin’ (Judas Priest) Smoke on the Water (Deep Purple) It’s a Long Way to the Top (If You Want To Rock ‘n Roll) (AC/DC) Panama (Van Halen) No More Mr. Nice Guy (Alice Cooper) Love Hurts (Nazaret

Where I Read ? Electronic Gaming Monthly #107

We have another gap in the EGM archives, which takes us forward almost a year, to issue #107 for June of 1998. Our cover story for this issue is Turok 2, and this issue also gives us some very nice cover art, in my opinion. Our editorial column for this issue is from John Davidson, who is now EIC for GamePro, which he has significantly re-formed. The editorial column is, as columns often are, about the shape of things to come. The Game Boy Color has been announced, and Sony has introduced some n
