An Open Letter to Ellie and Joel

    By Softballchic10

There are certain games that come along from time to time that really get your attention. It could be for the action, the graphics or game play. However, it is a rare occasion that a game grabs you for all of these, plus the amazing experience of becoming emotionally attached and involved in the actions of characters. It is to this that I write this open letter to Ellie and Joel. I met them in the “The Last of Us.” *(Please note that I've tried to write this to contain no spoilers.

Retro Moment! Slinky: The Toy Every Adult Should Own!

Over the past two weeks I have had this strong urge to go to Toys R Us and buy a Rubiks cube. So Sunday afternoon I finally went, let me start by saying that walking through a Toy's R Us just brings back a nostalgic feeling. A quick stroll through the board games isle, brings back memories of playing Candy Land, Shoots and Ladders, Connect Four, Operation, Scrabble and many more. As I walked the isles I was looking for two items.....a 3x3 Rubiks Cube and Simon. I found the Rubiks cube first, and

Little Smile Makers: Link's Awakening

Fair warning: Spoilers abound from here on out. If you haven't played the game, leave now or suffer the indignity of having one of the best Game Boy games ruined for you without playing through it yourself. The appearance of the beloved "Legend of Zelda" series on the Game Boy was a reason to rejoice for many series fans, giving gamers hours of entertainment while they explored the little island of Koholint, a place that was but a dot on the Hyrulian map, and yet seemed to contain far more secr

When Anti-Piracy Schemes Backfire

Piracy itself is a topic for another blog entirely, so tonight we're just going to focus on Titan Quest itself and showcase a small sample of what happens when you take anti-piracy schemes to the next level. You remember Titan Quest, don't you? Of course you don't. It was developed by the now-defunct Iron Lore Entertainment, and published by THQ, Inc, and it was targeted at the market of people who were waiting for Blizzard to get around to releasing Diablo III. And like most every other PC

Areala's "what If..." Game Design: Tomb Of Horrors (Part Three)

Areala's "What If..." Game Design series is a partially-serious, partially-tongue-in-cheek, completely-hyphen-laden look at what would happen if things that are not currently video games were turned into video games under her supervision. Part Three In part two of this series, we looked at the problem of difficulty, and the pros and cons of a straight-up room-for-room conversion of the original Tomb of Horrors module. This part will look at the persona that the player will take on when he

The Starting Line

I am personally somewhat of a late bloomer when it comes to games. Sure, I had a NES system when I was younger but I was truly never what I'd call "hardcore." Yeah, I beat Mario and Zelda which I consider fairly nice accomplishments. I enjoyed both games but really my experience in gaming was fairly limited. I'd play the occasional game on other systems as I was growing up. Mainly at my friends house when they got a SNES or a Sega. As I grew older my taste in games or desire to play them did n

Areala's "what If..." Game Design: The Tomb Of Horrors (Part Two)

Areala's "What If..." Game Design series is a partially-serious, partially-tongue-in-cheek, completely-hyphen-laden look at what would happen if things that are not currently video games were turned into video games under her supervision. Part Two In Part One of this series, we talked about the history of the Tomb of Horrors adventure and we picked our perspective choice. If you haven't read it, please start there. All others, ignore that "Abandon All Hope..." sign hanging in front of

Areala's "what If..." Game Design: The Tomb Of Horrors (Part One)

Areala's "What If..." Game Design series is a partially-serious, partially-tongue-in-cheek, completely-hyphen-laden look at what would happen if things that are not currently video games were turned into video games under her supervision. Part One Our first foray into this strange and uncharted world of would-be game design merges two of Areala's most favorite things: Dungeons & Dragons and adventure games in an effort to create the ultimate player-slaying nastyfest. I speak of none

America And The Mushroom Kingdom

The situation currently seen in the United States of America is something that all of us gamers have seen before. Quite regularly actually. It has played out before our eyes and we have even taken part in it on multiple occasions. Some of us even look forward to taking part in what we know will be a similar situation that will require our action and our expertise. What might I be referring to? The Mushroom Kingdom - The Mushroom Kingdom is a lot like the United States of America. We hav

So You Bought A Crappy Game...

Here's the situation: you've been anticipating a title for months. The hype has been extraordinary, the press coverage relentless, the previews have all been favourable, and you, by golly, have just got to have it. So you went to the local shop where you satisfy your gaming itch, picked up your very own copy, got home, threw it into your system, and... ...boy did it suck. Seriously, you think to yourself, what the hell were they thinking? Then, you turn the blame inwards. What the hell wer

Weirdest Easter Egg Ever?

We all know Easter Eggs. Not the kind the bunny goes around hiding, but the little hidden things programmers and designers leave in the game for players to find. Most commonly, these are debugging codes that allow you to skip levels, fill your inventory, max your powers, become invulnerable or other tools that let testers whisk quickly from one place to another without having to play the game from the start time after time after time. Less commonly, you'll find things like hidden playable cha

Nintendo DS Delights

Over our vacation last week, I gave my girlfriend something that I wasn't sure she would like. Now, normally I'm pretty conservative when getting gifts for her. I know what she likes and doesn't care for, since we've been together for over 10 years now. But this year, I decided to go with something that was a bit of a gamble. See, my girlfriend isn't very much of a gamer at all. Sure, she'll sit and watch me vapourize Necromorphs in Dead Space or whack Daedra in Oblivion or explore ancient ruins

Rage Quitters

Rage Quitters - Face it, about 80% of us have done this at some point. Now lets start by addressing the fact that, yes, sometimes the internet connection will drop in the middle of an online game (counsel or PC). This article is not directed towards the people who happen to have a shoddy internet connection. I will even go so far as to allow for the fact that most online game netcode is bad enough to actually drop some button inputs. In online fighting games (say Marvel v. Capcom 2 or even

Viral Video's And Their Legal Consequences.

If someone produces a fake video and plays it off as real, should they be held legaly responsible for injuries sustained by others who attempt to copy the actions without knowledge that it is faked. In today's society, a video can go "viral" in a matter of seconds. This means that it is seen by millions before it could ever be taken down. Realize also, it is a legal fact that once something is on the internet for longer then 3 seconds it is considered to be always available on the internet.
