About This File

Hope you all are enjoying playing with whatever toys Santa brought you this year.

This mag was released in early 1998, and was an exciting time to be a Star Wars fan, what with the prequels looming as a still-nebulous but guaranteed new hope on the horizon.  I was actually buying quite a few of the toys at the time, mostly out of nostalgia for the original Kenner toys I had as a kid, despite the absolutely fugly sculpts on many of the new releases...

Of course, unbeknownst to me, tragedy was just around the corner, as when the prequels actually began appearing a year later, they mercilessly slaughtered all appreciation and goodwill I had toward the franchise to the point that I can't watch anything "Star Wars" to this day.  But for the time, at least, all was right with the world, and Boba Fett was still one of the coolest dudes you could slap on a cover.

Awesome, thanks! As someone that did not grow up when the movies were released, but started enjoying them in the 90's, I never understood the hate that still surrounds the franchise to this day.

Yeah, it's crazy.  I had students who grew up during the prequel era and those were their favorites.

I'll never try to convince anyone who likes those films that they're wrong.  I actually consider them lucky if they're able to enjoy all eras of Star Wars.

But there's a reason there are so many people like myself who are constantly bandying about hyperbolic phases like "the prequels murdered my childhood."  You may not understand it, but just trust us that we really do feel that way.

I can't even explain it.  I like the Harry Potter films a lot, and thought the first Fantastic Beasts flick sucked (never bothered watching the others), but it didn't affect my feelings about the main series films.  But for some reason the shocking disappointment of the prequels turned my absolute LOVE of the original series into a dead hollow thing.  I still think the OT are good films and remember how special they were to me growing up, but I no longer feel the magic and no longer care what's happening with the franchise (I've never seen a single ep of any of those Disney+ series).

The original Zahn trilogy still rules, though.
