Total Control Issue 0 (October 1998)

About This File

This magazine was a bit more of a restoration project than a typical scan. All pages had wrinkles I couldn't flatten out and had to touch up in Photoshop, but the worst offender was page 9, which had a lot of faded text (8 had it as well, but not near as bad). Normally I'd consider this a write off, but considering the rarity of the magazine I'm not sure when I'd find another copy, if ever (at least, I think it's rare. Haven't seen it mentioned or scanned anywhere else). So, I decided to take the time to replace the lettering bit by bit - not a hard job by any means, just incredibly tedious.

As for the magazine itself, one thing that surprised me was how little overlap there is between issue 0 and issue 1. Some games aren't mentioned at all in issue 1, and those that are have their articles re-written (Space Station: Silicon Valley goes from a Beta Look to a full review between issues, for example). No clue if that's the norm or the exception for preview issues, but I thought it was interesting regardless.

Wow! I haven't seen this one for a long time, though I'm pretty sure I have a copy in storage somewhere. Stumbled on this scan while trying to find one of the "Out of Control" pages on which we used a Half-Life multiplayer screenshot instead of a team photo. We used to spend a lot of weekends at the office playing, and at some point we all added our faces to Barney character models along with a Total Control logo on the body armor. I guess we never ended up using it though.

I don't recall the print run for issue 0, but I suspect it was fewer than a thousand. I remember that we were handing them out at ECTS in September '98, and that Future Publishing (where I ended up working less than a year later) were promoting the launch of their multi-format Arcade magazine around the same time.

Come to think of it, the print run probably wasn't that small. We probably bundled copies of Issue 0 in with subscriber copies of other magazines or something.
