Ah, sorry, I had no idea we had a database that required moderator approval.  I guess it's the only section on the entire site requiring mod approval of team member submissions?  Admittedly, strategy guides are one of the few areas of this site I pay no attention to, so I didn't realize it was restricted (the other section I ignore being the "why the hell do we even have this?" Video Game Database which only Phillyman has permission to work on.  Seriously, we're not Mobygames or GameFAQs...know your role, Retromags 😂)

Probably it was in the early days of the site… I already asked Phillyman to check if this can be changed or at least if have the right to add them myself.

I approved the DB link, so you should be good there.

The idea behind the video game database was that eventually it could be used to link all references or appearances for specific video games to all of the magazines where they appear, and in what capacity (review, preview, cheat code, etc...). Thus, if you wanted to know where and when Chrono Trigger was mentioned across various mags, you could go to its DB page and see, "Ah, there was a strategy guide in this issue of Nintendo Power, and GamePro did a preview of it here, and EGM reviewed it here...".

Each of those links would then take you to the entry for the appropriate magazine, where you could browse the index or download the issue.

I like the idea, it's just going to take a lot of time to populate, especially since I think only Admins have editing permission for it at the moment. :)

I think this is far more likely to be accomplished by the VGHF (they claim to already have such a system in the works, if I'm not mistaken.)  Unless, of course, the reason we hardly ever see Phillyman or E-Day anymore is because they're working day and night on the Video Game Database.

But call me a cynic, (Cynisism? Why, it's my primary function, sir. I am well-versed in all forms of negativity.) - I can't see it ever becoming a reality here.  As an idea, it's fine, but a complete system like that is a massive undertaking, way more complicated than everything that's been done so far from the launch of this site until now, combined.  Even if we had dozens of people working on it, I can't see it becoming useful for decades.  And with only one person working on it (and let's be honest, is anyone at all actually working on it?) it's not going to be finished while any of us are alive to enjoy it.

What we've got right now is a big list of video games, some with a synopsis pasted from wikipedia, some with a link to a Youtube trailer, and none with a single mention of what magazine they can be found in.  No one can edit or add to it (except admins, but so far only Phillyman has contributed to it) and outside of a tiny handful of more recent additions, it appears that no work has been done on it in the past 10 years.  So unless all the work is being done offline, I think it's dead in the water.

And that's fine.  With so many mags still unscanned, we're better off staying focused on that goal without unnecessary distractions, in my opinion.
