Oh my god, I was just re-reading this and there's a line where Henry Jenkins jokes about game ratings containing warnings for positive things like, "Sid Meier's Gettysburg: 'Caution: This product features strong historical content." Just this past year Civil War games were censored or outright removed from sale because they featured the battle flag of the Confederacy. People thought it was insensitive because some shooter took a picture of himself with it.

Ah, the Rolling Stone parody. I remember this one, and the discomfort that I felt with Duke Nuken's creepy leering.

I live in the hope that someday you'll say something positive about one of my NextGen uploads, even despite this being their best cover.

Oh don't mind me, I just like throwing out commentary about the covers. Don't take any of it to heart. If they ever did an issue with something like Silent Hill 2 or one of the Elder Scrolls games on the cover you'd see me get all nostalgic and sappy like a wide-eyed little child.

Besides, I don't think that it's necessarily a bad cover. It's got topless Lara Croft on it! That automatically balances out Nukem's antics.

Well, on the cover Duke is the censor, and to me it makes perfect sense for censors to be creepy and leery.

I agree. Why Duke though? I would think that if anyone would be going for a topless Lara Croft, he would. :)

Hmm....Maybe he isn't the censor, but is actually coming up from behind Lara to remove the bar. Maybe his leering expression is actually being directed at whomever placed it there. That actually puts this cover in a whole different perspective.

It's funny how sex in games back then meant Lara Croft's large pointy polygons, whereas now it means actual sex in games. Duke Nukem has no time for ogling Lara anymore - he's too busy playing The Witcher 3 or whatever.

Maybe THAT'S what he's looking at. He's reaching to remove the censor bar, notices The Witcher, and is captured saying "Holy shit!"
