I've got the entirety of "Strategies for Nintendo Games" that I own scanned (the Consumer Guide one), and I'm gonna be poking at it a bit to touch it up and hopefully submit it.

Not gonna go too super crazy with the restoration (like I did with the How To Beat The Video Games cover), but I got the scans at 600 dpi and hopefully I'm gonna get it looking real good.

I've got a couple of PC Format issues, and in talks now with an Ebay seller who says he has maybe 100 more. I'd like to get the 1995-1996 years complete. Is anybody else interested in picking up / scanning PC Format?

For anyone interested in PC Format, Old Game Mags has 248 issues of PC Format available, including scans of every single issue from 1 to 168 (the rest of the later issues are digital rips).  That's physical scans of every issue from October 1991 to December 2004!

It's a members only site with a one-time joining fee, but it's worth every penny, and the money is needed to help keep the site and servers running, as unlike Retromags' 16,775 members, OGM is made up of just 336 totally awesome members currently.  Also, while Retromags has 5,055 downloads available, OGM has 12,500, many of which can't be found anywhere else. /plug 😀

That's it.  Where are you seeing that registration is closed?  The site owner is on a family vacation at the moment, but he still checks emails and should be able to approve new members.  Did you look in the place that says "Want to become a member?  This is the place to look!"

Well like I said in another thread I've 80% finished a scan of Famitsu #521, even though kitsune already has that one in their archive....

Well, this is my first scan and I'm using GIMP... which makes everything pretty rough. Also, the tutorial provided is for Photoshop and I'm not getting similar results. Specifically, the brightness/contrast makes everything look washed out.

I'm not familiar with GIMP but for what it's worth, I do use Photoshop but I still disagree with/don't follow a lot of the advice in that guide.  The scanning guides are E-Day's process - what works best for him, and are a good starting point for someone who has no idea what to do.  But any scanner/editor worth their salt has to eventually find their own path of what works best for them.  Different scanning equipment will give different results, just as different editing software might require different techniques to bring out the best in a scan.

And for that matter, different magazines will require different editing techniques from one another.  You can't just develop one editing profile and apply it to every scan.  Different types of paper used in different mags can reflect the scanner light differently, affecting the results, and mags of different paper types, ages, and storage conditions will age differently, requiring different editing techniques to make them look their best.  You can probably get away with editing the June and July 1984 issues of Computer Gaming World using the same exact editing techniques, but the June 2014 issue will need to be handled differently.

I've been working on scanning some magazines for the .hack series while I'm recovering from surgery. Some are only a couple of pages (like fliers) and others are larger (like mooks). Of course, I only found out that the machine screwed up the scans after I got back from surgery, so I'm not currently able to fix them.  (It cut off the bottom of each scan, sigh.) Wondering if I could send the thin ones that don't need de-binding to someone else to scan and return to me until I have access to a better scanner.

Anyway, here's the list:

  • .hackey 1
  • .hackey 2
  • .hackey 3
  • .hackey 4
  • .hackey 5
  • .hackey 6
  • .hackey 7
  • .hackey 8
  • .hackey GIFT Special
  • Beat Magazine 2010 December
  • .hack//The World Magazine Vol.1 (Comptiq 253 Special)
  • .hack//The World Magazine Vol.2 (Comptiq 258 Special)
  • .hack//The World Magazine Vol.3 (Comptiq 272 Special)

I don't think I saw anyone else working on them, but do let me know if I missed something.

I use PaintShop Pro to most of my image editing, but I know something about GIMP. What exactly is "rough" with it?

If you want to find an easy way to make your scans a little bit better (should work in most cases), try this:

Colors - Auto - White Balance

It should make white whiter and colours a bit brighter with a single click, and you don't need to use any brightness/contrast sliders.

And if colours looking faded is the problem, maybe there's something that you can do with the scanner to fix that. In my scanner using the Photo mode to scan makes colours look a bit more vibrant than the normal setting (as can be expected), so hitting that one button before scanning will save a lot of editing work later on. But obviously that depends on what kind of scanner you are using, and whether you are having issues with moiré patterns or not, etc.
