I've never understood what the point of certain strategy guides are.  I mean, a solution requires a problem you don't know the answer to, right?  And what problem could you have in a fighting game?  "I can't beat that guy."  OK so what's the solution?  Umm..."Practice.  Get better reflexes.  You feeb."  Did I need a book to tell me that?  But wait, it tells me the combos!  Oh hold on, aren't those in the manual?  Or maybe even an in-game tutorial?  (If not, wow, what a crap game...TGFGF - thank god for game faqs)

But don't pay me any mind, I've been dismissive of strategy guides since about 25 years ago when the Internet made them obsolete, but somebody must still be buying them, so whaddaIknow?

strategy guides for fighting games generally list all the special moves for each character. i had friends that dominated in Mortal Kombat for that reason. Until i used the internet for the first time and just wrote down all of the combos. EVEN ODDS NOW, YOU BASTARDS!!

i think the newest strategy guide i owned was for Final Fantasy 7. still have it, but it's all water damaged now. oh well.

I admit that I've never cared for fighting games, so the only one I ever owned was Dead of Alive.  I'm pretty sure it had a practice mode where you could learn the special moves.

What a rip-off if earlier games didn't tell you the special moves.  They could at least print them in the manual.  Imagine a flight sim where the manual was sold separately.  You'd pretty much have no choice but to buy the manual as well, since it would be necessary to figure out controls which would be near impossible to just intuit by random button pressing.

Of course, I guess the game makers were also profiting from all the official guides, so maybe they left all of the vital information out by design, and gamers were too young and dumb at the time to demand otherwise (imagine a fighting game shipping with no move list in the manual or in-game practice mode nowadays...)
