That's because you're probably subconsciously recalling the piece of artwork that Konami illegally stole from the original Ravenloft tabletop RPG module (1983) and redrew for the cover of Castlevania II: Simon's Quest (1987).  Dunno if TSR ever sued them, but they could have/should have.  Couldn't be more plagiarized if they tried (which they obviously did).  Shameless.

That's some interesting history right there and absolutely explains the similarities in style.  Never seen anyone talk about that.
