New Torrent Release - Retromags Game Informer Collection Issues 1-260

So what's the deal exactly with the individual downloads?  Will every issue be getting its own new release post?  If so, any idea how long it will take to finish them all?

Also, Doomguy2000, you've got your work cut out for you, bro.  Get to scrapin'!

I will write a script that will upload each file to a hidden category. It will not post 260 of these to the front page. I will make 1 entry when all 260 issues are in place and ready. :)

1 release per minute, 260.......you do the math :P

OMG! Thank you soooo much Phillyman, Bogusfrank and anyone else who worked on it as I am sure it took a lot over the years to put this together. I can't believe it was all done and just waiting to be uploaded. I am so happy right now and I hope you know how much this will be appreciated by the many fans of the magazine, especially as we mourn its passing today. Great job!!

thanks! So has game informer finally decided to lift their prohibition of people scanning their magazines?

Game Informer sadly went belly up today, so they probably don't have a lot of say in the matter anymore.

Definitely going through my collection of them to help build this out. Easily have 300+ of them.

We have the rest preserved as well, but our 10 year hold still stands. Look for the next 12 issues come Jan 1st :)

Game Informer shut down, its a grim day. I decided to make it a bit better. I saw a bunch of people mobilizing to start preserving these. But I knew bogusfrank had already completed it a few years back and we were just unable to host them.

I really appreciate it - I used to love reading Game Informer, and this indeed makes a dark day brighter.

That's not how copyright works.  They have the right to have a say for as long as most of us will be alive on this planet.  It's just been decided that they probably have more important things to worry about right now, like finding new jobs. 😅

Compliments to bogusfrank for the donations, scans, and edits.  This must have been a long, gargantuan effort, and I am sure we all at your service.

Also thanks to Retromags again for giving a place for many of us to relive old memories and sometimes to learn about other gaming cultures.

Good timing too.  Prices on certain issues have really been climbing this year, and with the closure of GI I am sure they will skyrocket in price.

I apologize in advance for being overly pedantic, but technically scans of mags shouldn't be described as having dpi.  That's a term reserved for printing.  A mag can be printed at a certain dpi, but scans are in ppi (pixels per inch.)  Granted, it's common for people to use dpi even when what is really meant is ppi - it's just become a standard shorthand for conveying size/resolution.

Most scans at Retromags (if they're following the scanning guidelines) do not have a consistent, quotable ppi.  This is because every page of a magazine is going to be slightly differently sized.  Looking at a mag I'm editing right now which was scanned at 600ppi, the actual dimensions of the pages are 4790x6428, 4793x6416, 4790x6420, 4789x6418...etc.  The differences are slight, just a matter of a few pixels, but when we save the files for compiling into a magazine, we tend to resize everything to a constant pixel height (as per Retromags' scanning guidelines).  If I were to release my 600ppi scan as a 300ppi edit, the page dimensions would effectively be halved, but they would still differ slightly from one another.  But if I save the pages at a constant height of 3200px (as I do), every page will be very near to 300ppi, but not exactly.   The only way to shrink everything to a constant pixel height AND keep the ppi constant would be to allow the width to be unconstrained, meaning that the software would be allowed to stretch or squeeze the image by whatever amount would keep the ppi exactly at 300.  We obviously don't want our images stretched or squeezed, so when resizing, we must make sure we've constrained the proportions so that when we change the height, the width changes proportionately, or vice versa.  Of course this means that each page will technically be a slightly different ppi.

Having said all that, it's actually even simpler - the edited mag in the above example isn't really 600ppi or 300ppi or anything-ppi.  It started as a 600ppi scan, but once edited, describing it in ppi is inaccurate - it's just 3200px high.  The thing is, there's no way of measuring the ppi of an image that's been resized to a specific pixel height.  This is because the image has to be resampled when shrunk or enlarged.  So once its been resized, ALL of the pixels are technically different from what was scanned and no longer represent the scanned pixels per inch of the original document.

TLDR: Unless we don't resize the images at all, it's more accurate to simply say a mag is ___px high as a measurable indication of its resolution.   DPI isn't applicable to scans, and PPI is only accurate if the mags were never resized.

Just a correction: we don't keep a mirror at archive.org. Those files are usually uploaded there by people who aren't affiliated with the site. Some of our members do host their files there as well, but Retromags itself does not do this. :)
