Scanning Questions ...

Question for the masses ...

When you scan issues of Nintendo Power ... do you typically tear up the entire issue in order to get perfect scans of each page, or just bend the pages in at the binding?

Also, is anyone accepting magazines for scanning? I have a lot of Nintendo Power issues I would love to donate to the effort but my time for scanning doesn't match the amount of issues I have. :)

Thanks!

Debinding the issues will allow you to scan them very fast .........Also you can mail any issues that are in good shape to me ......I will Debind them and scan them myself or distribute them to other scanners who dont have issues to scan :)

Sounds good! I'll send you a PM in the next couple of weeks. I'm in the process of a move that has to be done in 3 weeks' time, so I will likely move all my issues, and then parse back through them to scan some myself and also send some out for some help.

Thanks!

What's the physically easiest method you do for debinding the "perfect bound" style that Nintendo Power and other various strategy guides use?

Honestly i just use a box cutter with a brand new blade .......and slice as straight down as i can ......try to cut right where the glue ends on the binding .......and just remove pages as you go

Once you get 20 or so pages down ........the blade will follow the previous cuts :D

as for debinding... i've had a lot of luck pulling most pages out, starting at the cover. It sounds more barbaric, but I think it came much better than the cut jobs, since you're getting the whole sheet out. pull the cover back, and rip it off the spine. it'll take some of the binding with it. then, one or two or a few pages at a time, pull the pages back, and holding the top corner, flip the pages like you're turning them, and when they're back, hold the book steady on a table, and slowly pull the page, using some pressure to pull downward towards the bottom of the book. make sure if you do a few pages at a time that they arent stuck together anymore.. (if you're using an autofeeder, make sure to pull off little bits of glue from the pages you take out). after a handful of pages, use your nail or a razor to start removing the leftover glue on the binding.. if the glue is too high up over the page, you'll rip it. when you get down to the last dozen pages or so, the glue can easily be pulled off. just separate the last few, and thats it.

Ya i know it sounds really rough, but especially if you have an autofeeder, having the pages all the same size/straightness is key- a few crooked cuts go thru crooked and look bad, and any splintered pieces of book jam up the machine badly

Hi All

I plan on scanning as many NP issues as I can, once I get them out of storage. I was just wondering what resolution you would suggest scanning the mags at. Any info would be appreciated.

Regards

SnakeStorm

Welcome :D

It's always great to have a new scanner. I think most of the NP are done being scanned, they just need editing. Philly has the complete list of what's done, you need to talk to him. We are missing some posters http://www.retromags.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=22 if you have any of those it would be awsome if you could scan them (Hell, some of these posters http://www.retromags.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=19 were scanned badly the first time and could be rescanned).

As for resolution use 300dpi. For alittle more info read this http://www.retromags.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=143
