Gamepro Numbering

I just noticed that the numbering for these magazines is a bit confusing, to say the least.

It is stated in Wiki that the first magazine was released in March 1989, but when you go by that date and count upwards and you look at the issue of june 1996, it should be 88.

But on the cover it clearly states 93...

Naturally it is issue 93 as it states so on the cover and when following that numbering up till today, everything checks out.

So I was wondering, what's up with the numbering of the older mags?

At first I thought it might have been that in the early years they only released 1 magazine during the summer months or something like that, but that can't be the case as we actually have too many magazines instead of too little.

So could it be that the Wiki is simply wrong, or were there more than 12 magazines a year released or something?

Hey Meppi!

Try over at Magweasel. The admin there was running a site dedicated to video game magazines much like Retromags, except no scans. This should help you with the numbering system. The site seems to be a dead project.....the forums have been hacked and that may have lead to the towel being thrown in. But Still has some good information

Thanks! That does indeed seem to help.

I just noticed that when you click on one of the magazines in the bottom column, something like this pops up on the right hand side:

Issue 176 (labeled 186)

Date March 2004

Price $5.99

Cover Hitman: Contracts

So basically every magazine has been labelled with an issue number the is +10 of the actual release number...

I'm backing the wiki page up to make sure it doesn't get lost. That way it will be easier to check out something like this.

What do you think Philly? Should we number the releases like they are on that site, which would mean that the cover would say 129 when we call it 119?

Or were there 10 other issues of this magazine, perhaps under another name that were counted by the publisher.

If so we'd be better off using the cover numbers.

But if there weren't any others we would be starting at GamePro 010 - May-jun 1988 which also wouldn't make any sense.

We're screwed either way it seems. :P

Hmm, I found something interesting right here:

"

This 64 page compendium collected the first year's worth of the comic strip, as well as an exclusive introductory story and a poster of the awesome cover art.

In between the June and July issues, we put out our first special one-shot publication - a 64-page compendium that collected the first year's worth of the Adventures of GamePro comic strip, along with an exclusive introductory story and a poster of the awesome cover art. This was a dream come true for me to collect all the hard work I put into the strip each month, as well as giving me the opportunity to stretch out and give some more background story about the Zardoth vs. Evil Darklings conflict. Collected together, I was happy that the overall story really had some weight and teeth. I was also able to commission a cover by Mitch O'Connell based on the original artwork that I had painted myself for the cover. My ego was disappointed that I wasn't able to use my own cover artwork (we ended up using it as a full-page ad for this comic), but when I saw Mitch's awesome painting, all those feelings were instantly erased. This first issue sold for $2.95 and actually did pretty well, selling over 35,000 copies on the newsstand. "

At the bottom of this page:

http://gamepro.com/gamepro/domestic/games/...res/28746.shtml

If there were 9 others like this and they are being counted as actual issues, we might have solved out little dilemma.

All right, I made the decision to go with the numbering from this page in the end:

http://www.magweasel.com/wiki/GamePro

It's the one that makes most sense, so it will be the easiest way to number these. Otherwise the first issue would have been issue 010.

So the list for releases I will be following is the following one.

If anyone else working on GamePro scans could do the same, it would certainly make the releases more uniform and well-organized in the end.

Is there a reason there is no information in the GamePro wiki? I can help add information because I plan on scanning my old GamePro mags.

-Noah

No reason other then we have to build the tables and it takes some time, If you want to see how to build the tables take a look at the Nintendo Power or Sega Visions, For months with no issues you will need to use a || to skip that month. It just takes a little while to get the table all created. We can use the general information from MagWeasel, But I dont want to straight copy it, As you can see his tables are different then mine. But the general information of what issue falls on what month is fine to copy.

You know Magweasel was a member of this forum a while back. I'm sure I saw his name here at one point in an old topic but I can't find any search function to see if I can locate him again. Oh and from reading his site turns out he used to work for GamePro and several other gaming magazines.

He actually was logged yesterday, I tried to PM him while he was on to talk to him. I wanted to ask him for permission to use 2 of his cover scans of the Sega Visions magazines. I was going to trade him for the 2 he is missing. I must have just missed him. Its ashame that his site has kinda been abandoned, If you click on his forums you can see that they have been hacked and if you click on it....

I am wondering if the hacking of his forums was the reason for the lack of him being around?

I can scan those issues that are missing because they were in the lot that I'll be reciving. I'll also scan the few full issues that your missing or any of the others that you may need me to do. Visions are so thin that I shouldn't have to debind to scan.

Ah that's why I could not find him. I thought his name was Magweazle on the forums as well.

I can probably help out with this, I have a number of old gamepros. As soon as I unpack them, i'll see what i can find out.

I've got the answer to this conundrum (if I remember correctly, which I am certain I do).

GamePro used to put out a second magazine every now and then, quarterly or twice a year I think, for a few years or so. Some of you may remember it; it was called S.W.A.T.Pro. It was basically a collection of all the stuff from the SWATPro sections of previous magazines, plus guides and the odd review (they reviewd Sonic The Hedgehog for the Master System in one issue).

Anyhow, when they stopped publishing that magazine, they added the issue count to the total of GamePro magazine. That's why it suddenly jumps 11 issues, which means there were 11 issues of SWATPro published over the years presumably.

I remember EGM criticizing them on their issue count and how they did it in one magazine.

Wow, I somehow missed that last post. That certainly does explain th whole situation.

It does still leave us with the dilemma though.

What numbering do we use?

If it was simply one person working on this magazine it wouldn't be so urgent, but since releases are coming pretty quick for these magazines and since Phillyman, clerk37 and kbf_private_joker are all working on these, we'd better come up with a universal numbering guide that all can use.

Or soon it will be such a mess that it would take weeks to clean up the whole section.

Seeing as how they count SWATPro as regular issues, but they weren't released consecutively, it might be best to go with the list I made a couple of posts up, and treat the SWATPro issues as a seperate publication, a bit like the Buyers guides etc.

Let me know what everyone thinks, because if we're gonna do this, every issue starting with Issue 84 (labeled 94) July 1996, will have to be renamed (pages and all), the release document adjusted and renamed, and then be re-uploaded.

I'm willing to take this job on, no problem. But I just have to be sure everyone is on the same page on this one.

This makes me think that perhaps we might need a specific topic where the naming conventions are laid out even before the magazines are released.

Like the list I did above.

That way every issue released would have a standard naming convention, at least for that particular magazine.

As you can see all my magazines are done like this:

MAXIMUM The Video Game Magazine Issue 1 - 1995 (UK)

MAXIMUM The Video Game Magazine Issue 2 - 1995 (UK)

MAXIMUM The Video Game Magazine Issue 3 - 1996 (UK)

(note that there weren't any months given for the magazine releases, and that it didn't come out on a consistent monthly basis, thus only the year is mentioned)

Official Sega Saturn Magazine 001 - nov 1995 (UK)

Official Sega Saturn Magazine 002 - dec 1995 (UK)

Official Sega Saturn Magazine 003 - jan 1996 (UK)

(bi-monthly magazine without months being mentioned again, as well as an unconventional numbering sequence)

etc.

I know it used to be easy to use underscores between words, because when uploading something with regular spaces, the upload program/site would automatically add underscores, and even change characters.

But since we have to rar or zip our cbrs before uploading them, we don't have this problem. So I prefer something like this.

Again, it's perhaps a good thing that we have a discussion about this early one, if only to keep everything a bit organized.

So like I said, if we could agree on how certain magazines should be named like this, we could create complete lists for them in a topic (perhaps in the work in progress section).

That way, no matter who would start a magazine, he or she could simply go to the list, copy&paste the correct name for the cbr and release it as part of the whole set, which would then look lots nicer as well as greatly organized.

I have been using the numbering scheme on Magweasel's website for all my releases. Meaning the only GP releases that would need renumbering are Phillyman's. Not sure on the other release by clerk37.

I have been using the format GamePro_Issue096_July_1997 for the CBR and GamePro_Issue096_July_1997 - 001 for the files, but I am open to creating a standard.
