Why did Nintendo make such a big mistake? It's one of the 3 problems that happen cause of nintendo's Greed of a SNES add-on

1. It created the Playstation

2. Nintendo gave Phillips 5 Nintendo characters they could use cause they cancelled the project

3. Problem number 2 made the crappy CD-I games!

From what I heard the Playstation was suppose to be an addon for the SNES, But something fell through with Sony and Nintendo pulled out, but then Nintendo tried it with Phillips and again it fell through but this time Phillips had the rights to the Mario and Zelda franchises, and released there own games.

I will have to find the list of the top 10 mistakes ever made in Gaming history, as those are on there.

The problem was that Sony was going to be getting full licensing controls over the SNES CD games, without Nintendo having any input at all.

Which didn't sit well with Hiroshi Yamouchi and for very good reasons.

Who in their right mind would first build up a game system which is selling incredibly well, only to let another company create an add-on over which you have no control and would see very small royalties, compared to the carts you're currently producing.

It's like finding the chicken that lays golden eggs and then give it to your next door neighbor because he's promising to give some cow dung for every egg it lays. It's just bad business.

No one could have predicted the outcome in the end.

Oh and that second point is just wrong.

Philips obtained the right to include several Nintendo characters in their CD-i games due to the original contract to make a SNES add-on.

It had nothing to do with the cancelation of the process afterwards.

  • 4 weeks later...

I have spent at least a little time with all of the CDi Zelda titles, enough to say that they are all shoddy pieces of software in their own right... but until now I hadn't seen so much as a video of hotel Mario. Now, I don't know how that game plays in practcie, but going off of youtube alone it looks like it probably hold together much better mechanically, and also seems to lift it's design from games like Burger Time. And, while lacking on its own, compared to some of the Zelda games that animated intro was Walt freaking Disney.
