Waremonger's Work In Progress

Recommended Posts

Here's all the stuff that I eventually plan to scan. Mags that have "???" listed for the month do not have the month printed anywhere on or in the magazine and could not be discerned. Some of these mags may not be scanned anytime in the near future as they are very wide and would not fit on a standard scanner (Amiga World, Amiga Format, Next Generation, etc). If you have any Electronic Games or Electronic Fun/Computer Fun issues that aren't listed and you want them scanned please let me know.

It looks like photobuckets resized them to 1024, but still, these look absolutely wonderful. :D

Please, please, please don't resize them to anything smaller than 1440 for the final release as they really do seem to jump of from the screen.

Not quite sure about the contrast and saturation in the last pic as I can't compare it to the actual magazine. But if the magazine page is feels this dark and "heavy" as well then it's just about perfect.

Looking at the second scans I'm pretty sure that's the case as the lighter colors seem just right.

If I really do have to find something to comment on, the the only thing I would be able to say is that you seemed to have missed 2 speckles of dust in the top left corner of the last scan. ;)

But that's just nitpicking.

I'm going to resize them down to 1600. I'm keeping the original (full size) PNG's on a back-up HD. I'm sure they'll be needed again sometime in the future as monitor resolutions increase.

Actually it's not dust - these were quick and dirty test crops I did (the originals are still uncropped) and that page looks like it has a very small piece missing at the top left corner. Most likely this was done at the printers since I only opened this thing a couple of times before. I'm still figuring out a work flow in Photoshop to make sure the pages are all cropped uniformly but retain as much of the pages as possible.

I'm looking for the absolute best quality I can get as I'm only going to be doing it once so any suggestions are definitely welcome.

Looks a hell of a lot better than what my scanner spits out.

I really love my Epson 4490 - it's a great scanner for the price.

I haven't really found a way to crop pages automatically in Photoshop. I'm sure it's possible, but as half of the pages should be cropped a bit more from the left and the other half from the right, I actually haven't even tried.

What I do is crop them manually and try to do them more or less the same way.

But some pages are better than others on the spine side, so there is a tiny bit of difference.

Then when all my PSD files are completely cleaned up and cropped, I run a batch action to up the saturation by 20 (which doesn't seem necessary for yours at all), crop the to a standard size which is different for each magazine but always 1440 wide. (1600 is more then fine btw :) ) and save them in a separate map as JPGs with a quality of 9.

You can always use the clone tool to fix those small things up very nicely. Or even the heal tool sometimes.

If you need more tips, you can always take a look at the scanning FAQ. I should get around do redoing it for Photoshop one day though.

I've never tried upping the saturation. I always do Auto Color when I am editing, and it usually improves the colour a lot from what the scanner produced. Sometimes it doesn't though, so I save whichever way looks best. I will perhaps try the saturation trick on my next scan.

Yeah, I was thinking about manually cropping the bottom of each image and then running a script to crop the tops of all the images to a uniform height. Unfortunately it's easier said than done because I need to find the image that needs the most cropping as the lowest common denominator. Then I plan to do the same with the spine edge of the page (finding the page that needs the most cropping and cropping the rest of the pages to the same width). The reason I wanted to do it this way was so that when the pages are all scaled down to 1600 pix wide the text is consistently the same size from page to page. I had noticed from scanning a book a while ago that if I just cropped each page individually to slightly different sizes then the text differed slightly in size from page to page after it was scaled.

As I was playing with some of the pages last night I'm still undecided as to whether to straighten the pages. Most pages are not 100% straight, but I'm pretty certain it's due to the actual printing because the tops and bottoms of the page are straight and I scanned with the edge of the page (not the spine edge) against the edge of the platen so that edge is also straight. I plan on running a couple of test scans tonight with the page in the middle of the platen and straighten (via the ruler tool on PS) it to see how much more cropping work would need to be done. With the few I tested yesterday straightening them only requires rotating by .3 degrees so I'm not sure it's worth it...

I'm going to take a quick break on scanning Nintendo Player's Guides so I can do a much needed preservation of the premier issue of Ahoy! magazine (January, 1984). I must have read this mag 50 times as a kid, and it definitely shows.

OMG, I knew from you telling me you had some Ahoy mags that there was a chance that you would have the earlier ones but at no time did I think you had issue #1. That is going to be so awesome to see uploaded.

This sucker is proving to be a challenge. I've scanned it twice now and was unhappy with the results both times... Maybe I'm just expecting too much - the mag has aged a lot and the paper they used is "woody" (for lack of a better word, but it has a grain to it). Also, a lot of the pages are very yellow and I've been trying different colored backgrounds behind the pages to get the best scan I can.

I'm having the same problem with some of the older CVG issues and the Mean Machines ones.

The pages that are supposed to be white are heavily discolored and look sometimes closer to brown than even yellow.

Filling these with the bucket tool like you can do with relatively clean pages doesn't seem to be an option since the inside of the letters contrasts too much with the outside that way.

I really don't know what I'm going to have to do with those...

Perhaps just clean them up manually as good as possible and leave the discoloring the way it is?

Problem is, I know that it will keep bothering me. :-/

Try using the White Balance feature (at least that is what it is in Gimp). Turns pages that are supposed to be white but end up scanning brownish or grey or yellow back to white, or close to it. Just be careful, it can wash out pastel colors like light blues or light green (only had this problem with some of the VG&CE issues I have scanned that used one big box for most of the page).

If you don't mind post a page or two that is giving you trouble and I will take a crack at it and try to help solve the problem.

I did try using the White Balance filter but unfortunately it didn't work well for most pages because they had an Ad or some other part of the page that was very white so it didn't correct the problem areas. Next time I scan it (probably this week) I'll throw a page up here so you can see what I mean.

You can also try using the color balance feature, it works sometimes better than the auto white.

Thanks for doing Ahoy #1 and working on Compuer Fun #1!
