What Magazines Have You Got?

With the moderators talk about spring house cleaning and small renovations for the site, I thought it would be a good idea to get organized concerning the magazines that are missing.

I am starting to compile charts for each magazine on Retromags, so it is easier for everyone to keep track of what is on the site and in possession of members, and what is missing. If you have any magazines that you bought to contribute to this site that are from 1999 or earlier, or have some from years ago that you are willing to donate, please let me know here. That way I, and others looking at obtaining issues for the site, don't end up buying something that another member already has (unless they want to buy the magazine for themselves, that is :) ). Hang onto any 2000 or later magazines. While we don't accept them here at the moment, one day we will.

Even if you have magazines that are not on this site yet but would like to share, by all means let us know. If we know what we have, then it is easier for everyone to know what we need. I'll be making charts to easily illustrate what is missing, as I have done in the EGM thread

If you can copy and paste your list here as well, that would be great :)

To help get the ball rolling here:

Here is a list of the mags I currently have on hand that I plan on scanning and uploading ASAP.

Edit: 2/10/09

List removed, please message me if you need a copy of it.

Added 7 issues to my list from ebay purchases (in yellow). Going to see about getting some more when they come up.

Jesus...that's a lot! I'll take into account the 1999 and earlier issues only. But don't get rid of those 2000 and later issues :)

Don't worry. My in-laws are going to pay to finish my storage building up here. 900 square feet of storage with 400 extra for a shop that at least he will get to use, heated and cooled with 2x6 studs and 4 1/4 inches of insulation in the walls-it is built better than the house they are living in (got a feeling they will probably swap out living quarters later this summer). So, no worries about the post 1999 stuff, in fact I am going to meet a guy that is giving me another 200 to 300 gaming mags all newer stuff that isn't eligible for here so that will be left here with the rest of my post 1999 issues.

Oh as far as the posted list there, I stopped cataloging because I got a hand cramp the third day of making that list, but it doesn't matter, the stuff not on the list is not eligible here anymore so I never bothered to finish it.

Heyo :) Makes me happy in the pants that people are taking the time to try and archive all these wonderful mags.

At some point over the next 1-6 months (A large timescale I know :P but it can't be helped), I'll be able to crack open and scan a fair few C&VG mags from the golden era. I'm hoping I'll discover that I took out the yellow pages from only a couple, and if so praying those ones are still sitting in the magazines at least, but can't guarantee it.

See you in some time... could be a while before I get the chance to do this I'm afraid, but it will get done eventually :)

Hi there, always nice to see people willing to join in. :)

You got me curious though as to which era you are referring.

My favourite CVG era as without a doubt the Paul Davies one, but I might be slightly biased since the 32-bit era overall is very dear to me.

Don't worry about timetables or anything like that. Just know that many people will be happy whenever the magazines are released. ;)

I've not seen it mentioned anywhere else, and it's totally the sort of thing enthusiasts would be into. I have a large number of "Rainbow" magazines. This was the magazine published specifically for the TRS-80 CoCo user back in the 1980s. I'm not 100% sure how many I have, but I'd estimate at least a dozen or more.

Rainbow published all sorts of nifty articles about things you could do with your CoCo computer, compiled full BASIC code listings for a variety of different programs including some pretty impressive games, reviewed hardware and applications, published puzzles, and held contests including ones for full programs that were written with only 1 or 2 lines of code. It's an insanely cool look at what the CoCo community was like back then, and it seems like the perfect sort of thing to donate to Retromags as they are certainly old enough.

Would these be of interest to the site? I'm not certain if I have the heart to personally destroy them in order to scan them, though I'm more than willing to at least do cover scans and attempt a non-destructive page-by-page scan of them if y'all think they'd be good on the site. Would samples help? Seriously, these things rock and I'd love to share them. :)

Not sure if it is nostalgia speaking or not but my first computer that I remember was a Color Computer (2 I believe). I wholeheartedly say yes, it would be awesome to have stuff like that available here. If you are willing to try and scan it, I am more than willing to offer any help in getting them scanned without destroying them, or damaging them. Cover scans would be great to start, maybe build up some enthusiasm for them.

I have quite a few magazines I might be able to contribute or possibly sell to anyone who wants to contribute. The include Ultra Game Players, Game Players, Gamefan, Nintendo Power, Sega Visions and some others. A lot of the Sega Visions don't have their covers, though and I'm sure I'm missing a few pages here and there.. Also some PSM and Dreamcast magazines here and there. I may make a list later on if I have the time.

I also have the first 50 or so Sonic the Hedgehog comics. I may scan the first few issues soon just to see how they come out without unbinding them.

Does anyone have the old Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles magazine that you were sent from being a member of the fan club? I really would like to read those again!

Hi, first post here.

I have a load of old PC Zone magazines (UK), issues 28 (Jul 1995), 31, 35 - 130 (Jul 2003) inclusive, with all cover CDs and cover books, that I don't have the space to keep. I don't have the time to scan them myself but I would be happy to donate them to someone who can scan them and make them available. Does anyone want them? I'm based in the UK.

I received Game Pro issue 135 Dec 1999 in the mail yesterday in average condition (it's not bad, just the cover has some damage and the corners are a bit bent.) I'll try to scan ASAP

I also may be getting EGM 124 Nov 199 from ebay in the following week or 2.

Dragmire and Pelago, welcome to Retromags, we all hope that you enjoy your stay here.

Pelago, I am trying to get ahold of some members that I know of in the UK but have had no luck yet (hopefully some others may see your post and reply to it).

Dragmire, congrats on getting that Gamepro (not much is going across ebay in the older category right now). Don't worry about the corners being bent, that is normal, most of the time it won't even show up in the scan (just straighten them out and put plenty of pressure on the issue while scanning-suggestion, a thicker magazine will do wonders, just turn it where the spines are opposite of each other). Try to scan at 300 DPI also.

Thanks. Also, I won the EGM I mentioned so I'll be scanning that one when it arrives.

One question though, when scanning, what do I do about the posters inside?

Honestly, it is up to you. I am not one to detach the poster from the magazine, others may do it. It is really personal preference. At the least, scan the pages you can and just post that there is a poster (possibly of what if you can) so that someone else may be able to scan it from an issue that is damaged or something. Like the Nintendo Power mags have posters that are 3 pages pull out style but Gamepro had 2x2 posters which had to be detached to see the whole thing.

Thanks for scanning those issues, I am sure we are all looking forward to having those issues get the project that much closer to complete.

I also have a Street Fighter Alpha 2 Stategy Guide that I'm going to hang onto because it's great for any SF game. I also have Darkstalkers(Fair cond. with some torn out art pages) and some badly done Prima guides(new cond.) for some PSX games(Lunar & Wild Arms and maybe another). I have Nintendo Players Guides for Chrono Trigger and Earthbound in fair condition.

Everything listed comes from the USA. Some of the issues I posted as Good with missing pages aren't actually all missing pages, just sometimes have writing or little snippits taken out, but it's not often. Unfortunately though, my Nintendo Power issues have the cards and posters taken from them, sorry.

I'm thinking about selling the magazines(excluding the SFA2, CT and EB guides) if anyone would actually want to put any needed issues up here. I really don't want to scan all this stuff, too lazy/too little time. There are some gems here, though. I know a few of the things I posted are too new to be included(the newer NPs for one), but I made a personal file of everything and just copied it all over. If anyone's genuinely interested, PM me. I'd only really like to sell if I'll be seeing them put online here.

ok, I have a lot of great vid game mags from the early to late 90's. I'd be willing to send them to any of you regular scanners (someone trustworthy obviously.. ). I could send like 15-20 issues a time via USPS Priority Flat Rate Box. I'd pay for shipping to you, you pay for shipping them back. I'm gonna make a list of the issues I have, and post that list here soon. I'd scan them myself, but I'm just not up to it. I used to scan a lot of games, boxes & manuals for RF Generation. I'm all scanned out.. Is it a good idea? Any of you up for it? Thanks.

5 = Perfect / 4 = Near Mint / 3 = Avg. Little Wear / 2 = Well Read & Rough around the edges, but Complete / 1 = Missing cover, pages, or very poor condition overall (creases, stains, dog ears etc.)

Most issues will be a 3 and are in great condition overall with very little wear noticeable. Infact a lot of the 3’s I’m giving should probably be 4’s… And a lot of the 2’s interior pages are flawless… Most 1’s are missing the cover & rough, but readable.

Playstation Plus (UK mag?) Sept 98

I used to have a lot more mags, but had to sell a bunch in recent years.. :(

Here are some pics of my mag collection.

Also, I'm a game reviewer in the new magazine, Classic Video Gamer. I did the review for CyberMorph in the 1st issue. I'll hopefully be doing reviews for the mag for a long time!

That is where I have seen your name before, in Classic Video Gamer Magazine. Great review, I hope to see you do more with them in the future.

Have you seen the review here for ClassicVGM?

I am going to try and find my list of mags again and see what we have between us on the Gamefan issues.

Thanks! I was really excited to write for an actual video game magazine. Been kind of a dream of mine since I was a kid... I've loved videogame magazines ever since I discovered them in the early to mid 90's. I lost interest in game mags since GameFan died. So this website is PERFECT for me. :D

My review of Iron Soldier for the Jaguar should be in the next issue. I've gotta figure out what games to review next now. :)

Infact the reason I finally registered here is because I saw a post at Atari Age about Classic Video Gamer being reviewed. I thought it was an awesome review and really put the mag in a good light. I actually knew about Retro Mags sometime ago. I just never got around to registering. I was thinking about scanning mags myself, but... It's a lot of work and I'm an impatient person! lol...

Sounds good about the GameFans. I'll happily lend out any of my mags in order for them to get scanned and enjoyed by other retro videogame mag connoisseurs. ;)

I am glad that you liked the review of Classic Video Gamer Magazine and also glad you decided to join up here as you are surely to become a welcome (already are) member and hopefully integral to the project as you have quite a larg collection there. The review came out great because ClassicVGM was so great in the first place. It is easy to write a review about something good. :)

Maybe we can continue this in another forum thread or something but I have a few games that I would like to see reviewed. I will hurry and get the Gamefan list compiled so we have a better idea where we stand on it.

I have a moderatly big chunk of GamePro Magazines I was planning on selling or donating to the site (probably selling would be better for me at the moment, as I'm currently between jobs.) I'm going to get a list togeather, and I'll once that's done I'll put the list up on this thread (as well as marking what issues the archive doesn't have yet.)

Other Magazines

Gamers' Republic - V2 Issue 8, January 2000 (MDK 2)

PC Gamer - V8 #1, January 2001 (Ultimate Strategy Guide) 2 copies

PC Gamer - V10, #1, January 2003 (Star Wars Galaxies)

Official US Playstation Magazine - #60 - September 2002 (SOCOM: US Navy Seals).

I was planning on selling the issues in lots, priced so it was basically $1 or $.50 an issue. I was also planning on selling the issues from 2000 and earlier in one lot, and the issues from later in another lot. Being that I've taken advantage of the site's archive for the posts on my blog, I'd like to offer these to users of the site first.

(I'd donate the 2000-and-earlier set, but again, I'm unemployed right now.) My preference would be that the 2000-and-earlier set go to someone who is able to scan the issues for the site, as I'm not particularly able to scan them at the moment as well.

I have the following Nintendo Power Player's Guides for donation:

- Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island

- The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

- The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons / Oracle of Ages

The first two are of the original Super NES versions, released in 1995 and 1992 respectively. And even though the last one was released in 2001 (after this site's cutoff date), I think it should still be put on the site because it's from the Game Boy era, which is retro now, even Game Boy Color.
