The two-player mode was fun, but I think it lost a lot that you could only fight like-characters (Jimmy vs. Jimmy, Linda vs. Linda, etc...) instead of being able to fight, say, Chintai vs. Billy. Those sprites were big for an NES game though, that's for sure.

The story in the NES version says that Jimmy is a member of the Shadow gang, the ones who shot Marion but in the arcade version and on the sequel Billy & Jimmy are teamates.

I never really appreciated this game because it didn't have the co-op arcade mode. However, I revisited it and kind of dig it. It has a degree of RPGing elements, and pretty good beat em up combat.
