Initial Thoughts On Punch Out! *edited*

Recommended Posts

Well my initial thoughts on Punch Out!! are that this game needs many changes. I mean it's not a bad game but I'm really not impressed. I'm only a few fights away from the last boss and just feel that the game is too easy. I hear that after you beat the game you get to defend you title by playing through all the characters again but they are harder. So I guess that will be more like playing Punch Out!!

But there are many things that I would change about the game. First of the controlling. I have not tried the motion controls yet and I don't know if I ever will. Playing the game with just the Wii remote holding it like an NES pad is ok but not the most confortable way of playing the game. I would have added support for the classic controller. One of the things that is really annoying is that you have to use the remote as a pointer on all the menus instead of being able to use the controller and select the different options using just the D-Pad.

Speaking of menus this is another thing that I would have done different. It's not so much the way the menus navigate (besides what I've already mentioned) but the way it looks. The way they had it set up for Super Punch Out was so much better. I wish they would have kept that same style but supped it up a bit. Sure these really are just minor gripes but I don't think it really holds up as much as all the interviews and reviews that I was reading about.

I'm glad that I have not decided to buy the game because it's just no where near as good as Super Punch Out. I can't really even say if it's better than the Tyson/Mr. Dream Punch Out. But I can say it's quite a bit better than the arcade Punch Out and Super Punch Out.

So this is yet another game that I would advise that any of you thinking about buying you may want to try it out first. I honestly don't think this will provide the hours and hours of fun that I remember on Super Punch Out trying to break my KO times. I don't think any game will ever be able to bring that kind of excitement back.

If you are just now reading this post please read my later posts as well

Dang it Thor. I was looking for an excuse to buy the game...not an excuse to wait for it to show up at Blockbuster...

I mean hey ... it's a good game and I think I figured out the big thing that I don't like about it.

When you loose a match you can fight the same opponent over and over till your blue (or black and blue) in the face.

Sure the way they did it in Super Punch out pissed me off enough where you get one rematch and then loose your rank but I think that is what kept me coming back. This one you can start a match learn their pattern after one round and start the fight over. Now that you have easily memorized their pattern you just keep restarting the fight until you have defeated the opponent w/o getting hit once.

Learning patterns on the old game was much more difficult because of you having to go back to the previous fighter just completely throws you off.

But hey it's still a good game. Just not worth $50.

Never really got into the original punch out, but I did like Super Punch Out......will pick up this new title when it gets to the $20-$30 range

Ok so my initial thoughts I think were a bit hasty. Yes I still have feelings about the menus and the controls while in menu. But my outlook on the game now has change for the better. I see the play mechanics have change slightly and I'm enjoying it and now I can't wait to watch for more of this type of thing on the other characters. So anyway when you fight Super Macho Man. He swings at you. You dodge and counter punch. But... after you counter punch you can see his body is still left open so why not take another swing at him. OH MY it actually connected.

This is basically what I thought to my self as this happened.

I don't know why but I love the fact that even after I have finished my combo that last punch left him stunned and now I can hit him in the belly. Either I have not played Punch Out in a long time or I don't remember opportunities like this in the past games. So I will post the video of what I'm talking about as soon as it is ready on youtube.

Oh and by the way... I will be paying $50 for this game now. I know I said that I wouldn't spend that kind of money on this game but you know what. I think the game has finally proved it self to me. It's totally worth it. I'm loving it!!!

Is there any way you could try playing it with the Wii/chuck and Balance Board option? They aren't getting it at my Blockbuster for a while :(

If I could get some impressions on that (from someone I trust) I can decide if it is time to start begging the wife.

I guess I could try for you I don't think this game would be any good with that method but I guess I'm biased that way.

OK that was rather annoying. The controls are really tight compared to Wii Sports Boxing but still not the accuracy you need to play a Punch-Out game. And the balance board just made it more difficult. So I guess if your wanting a challenge then yeah go for it. I'm sure I could get used to the nun chuck but I'd have to leave the balance board shut off.

I liked all of Nin's past titles so I was glad to hear this one was making a comeback. I decided to get it when I saw Amazon had a launch special for $40 new. I think it arrives tomorrow.

Now if we can get a few more of their past games that would be excellent.

If they stayed true to the original Mario RPG style (but updated graphically of course) I'd love to see that...

Kid Icarus is a hot rumor going around that it will be one of the titles for E3. Starfox won't happen for a while cause the original developer said he didn't wanna do one anytime soon. Mother 4 probably won't come around cause they won't f'n release Mother 3, it took a dedicatied group of fans years to release a fan sub of it.

Exactly what I was thinking. I hate these Paper Mario Games or Mario & Luigi games.

Now that Nintendo and Square are doing business w/ each other again I would love to see this actually happen.

Kid Icarus, a sequel to Metroid Fusion (in 2d of course), a new DKC, a new Zelda, or a new Mario released in 2009 and I'll be a happy gamer. I'd really like to see the first two announced at E3......either for DS or Wii (both would be fantastic!).

I was thinking as much on Kid Icarus. After putting him in Smash they almost need to create a new game and that would be their surprise announcement if there's no new Mario, Zelda, or Metroid.

Never heard that about Starfox. Hopefully someone can make a decent sequel.

Yeah, for whatever reason that series just doesn't make it here. I liked the SNES one and wouldn't mind another. Nin is crazy not to bring it to the US.

I thought the Paper and M&L games were good. Not very difficult but good. So either that or more like 7 Stars, both are fine for me.

I wouldn't expect a new Mario right away unless they go DS. 2D Metroid, oh yeah. DS is getting a Zelda game and I'm sure a new Wii one has to be in the works.

Yeah I too would love to see a new Icarus. I loved both the NES and GB games though the GB game was way to easy. I guess they were making up for the difficulty of the NES game :D Then Fusion... you know I never thought about that but I'd love to see another Fusion game and as you said in 2D naturally.

New Kid Icarus would be AWESOME! I love that game and its GameBoy sequel and Pit looked pretty sweet on Smash Bros. I'd love to see how his world looks on Wii.

Mother 3/4 won't be coming here. Mother 4 isn't going to be done at all, the creator said so himself. As for M3, the only way we'd get it is if they somehow released a Mother 1+2 here in the states like they did in Japan and then followed up with Mother 3. But it would be for DS and not GBA, of course. That's all speculation from starmen.net boards.

Another StarFox would be great too, but only if it were ship battles and not this crazy adventure stuff like we saw on 64 and GC. I liked the DS game a lot.

I agree with you about Starfox.

As for Punch Out!, I don't really like it :(

Well don't count out Wii Ware and DSi Ware.

Reggie said he is a fan of the Mother games and wants to see them released in the US so I still have my fingers crossed. I have yet to play Mother 3 for more than 30 mins. But I think Nintendo would be wise as to just talk to the team that did the English patch and maybe give them a pay off so they can use the translation for release that way they don't have to do any work and can reap the benefits.
