Auto Feed Scanner Advice

Hi guys,

I'm looking to scan some of my old computing mags (primarily Computer Shopper and Personal Computer World) for storage purposes and are considering the purchase of a sheet feed scanner for home use. The scanning would be destructive - I'd remove the spine - so I'm limiting it to magazines that I no longer wish to keep in their paper form.

I used an old Brother MFC unit at my old job that was able to scan colour documents, but it was slow, got stuck on slightly creased paper and frequently failed on minor things. Does anyone have recommendations for a decent, cheap (sub £200) device to purchase? (references to UK shops or online stores that sell particular models are also appreciated, if you know a bargain).

I have an HP Photosmart C7280 All-in-One, and I love it. It only scans one side at a time using the auto feeder, but that is fine with me since I don't use it. Phillyman has some Canon one that will scan both sides.

Personally, I would recommend not using the auto feeder. Sure, it's faster (and easier), but the end product sucks compared to using the flatbed. Pages will get pulled in crooked, plus there will be bleed through on any page that isn't dark.

I second that! I have an Epson Artisan 800 that has an auto feeder as well, but it really only works best on text documents, and the thicker glossy pages of magazines tend to put a heavy strain on that part of the unit. Best bet is to use the flatbed. But I would recommend the Epson Artisan series for a machine if you want one with a document feeder.
