Could Sega Be Easing Back Into Hardware?

Seems that Sega is getting back into hardware, slowly but surely. The Sega Vision is currently just about everything but a game system (with updated versions later that could play games).

The first thing I should let everyone know is that the game will not be able play games… yet. The original model showed off the ability to play simple flash games, but the execs at Sega Prize Europe decided that flash games simply were not good enough, and for the time being any game function was to be cut out. Quite simply they didn’t want people to think that they were trying to compete with the PSP and DS; the Sega Vision is first and foremost a portable media player.

However, all is not lost (for those really wanting games), Sega is looking at releasing updated models in the future, which could include the option to play games. It is not confirmed yet, so don’t get too excited, but I think there is a very solid chance that it will eventually come to fruition.

My thoughts on this:

Just re-release the damn DreamCast. It's more then good enough to compete with today's systems IMO.

Simply add a VGA port and the ability to upscale to 720 and 1080p through HDMI as well and start making games for it again.

I always imagined they would jump back in on 9/9/09 :P

I think that Panasonic should come back into the mix with the 3DO² B)

Keep dreaming. They are doing too well as a publisher, putting out games on 5 consoles and the iPhone (and god knows what else), to go back to restricting themselves to one system. Although, I am sure they games would improve a great deal if they were for their machine. Like in the old days. Nowadays, Sega is a simple run-of-the-mill publisher, churning out stuff that's not that great, but still sells. Plus 4 consoles is too much :)

Take the Dreamcast, drop the GD-Rom drive, use SD or some other proprietary format of their own media, make a rechargeable battery for it, install an LCD screen (widescreen or not, touchscreen or not, whatever just get one in there), include TV out with normal cables, maybe a port for a second controller at the minimum. Release the system as a handheld.
