Sony Ps3 Drama Has Started (everyone Act Like You Aren't Watching It)

Apparently Activision's Bobby Kotick is upset about the price of the PS3 system.

They have to cut the price, because if they don't, the attach rates are likely to slow", he continues. "If we are being realistic, we might have to stop supporting Sony...When we look at 2010 and 2011, we might want to consider if we support the console - and the PSP [portable] too.

Then we get this reply from Sony through kotaku.com:

PlayStation has tremendous momentum coming out of E3, and we are seeing positive growth with more than 350 titles slated to hit across all our platforms, including many anticipated games from our publishing partners," said Playstation spokesman Patrick Seybold. "We enjoy healthy business relationships with and greatly value our publishing partners and are working closely with them to deliver the best entertainment experience.

The triverse slant on this one?  Sony is calling Activisions bluff by ignoring it with subtle "nya nya"

VG247.com had this quote in an article they just ran:

Activision boss Bobby Kotick’s bombshell threat to drop Sony formats earlier today is nothing but posturing, Wedbush Morgan’s Michael Pachter has told VG247.

“Of course Bobby’s bluffing, and good for him,” said the analyst in a phone call.

“I think Bobby’s obviously interested in Sony selling as many PS3s as they possibly can, and he’s not happy with their penetration so far. I think he favours a price cut, and would rather see one sooner than later.”

It is getting interesting and I think Activision may do just what Thor is thinking they will.

Kotick was apparently critical on the pricing of the PSP Go also:

Pachter said that he expects Sony to react to Kotick in the same way it did when he said Sony was “ripping off consumers” with its PSP Go pricing: by saying it’s offended.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen -- June 23

Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs -- June 30

Wolfenstein -- August 4

Guitar Hero 5 -- September 1

Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2 -- September 8

Singularity -- TBA

Cabela's Outdoor Adventure -- September 22

Tony Hawk: Ride -- October

Bakugan -- October

Modern Warfare 2 -- November 10

Chaotic -- November

Guitar Hero: Van Halen -- Fall

Band Hero -- Fall

Cabela's Big Game Hunter 2009 -- TBA

That list of games that will be missed on PS3 this year if Activision were to drop PS3 support ASAP is thanks to G4tv.  What game would everyone here miss the most out of that list?  Looks like a few big names would be lost.

The triverse slant here:  Remember what not having EA did for Sega with the Dreamcast...

The controversy's been going on since the first announced price of $600. The public didn't like it. Sony's bigger problem is not its price right now(which is less than before), but MS & Nintendo have their consoles reduced further in price.

That list of games was not from Activision (of course they would still release those games).  Course, sequels to some of those games would probably be missed if Activision went through with this.  Remember, history is repeating itself, we are going to be heading into console exclusivity in the next generation of systems and I think this is a case of some companies showing their cards a little early.

I got my PS3 with stimulus money in 2007 (or was it last year?) and really regretted the purchase until this past Saturday. I bought Infamous for the PS3 that day and played it as much as possible until yesterday. I'm pretty sure I've logged over 20 hours in the game so far. I love it! It makes PS3 game number 5 for me.

Before that, I was only using the PS3 as a blu-ray player. I bought infamous around 2:30 Saturday, but had to wait till after 5 to play it. My PS3 controller had no juice in it, I had to update my firmware, then had to install the game. It was all worth it after I played a few missions in the game. Awesome title. Now, I'm bargain hunting for more PS3 games.

I watched Sony's press conference at E3 and was impressed with a number of games. The motion wand thing was ok, but I'll have to see some really cool software for it before I buy in. God of War 3, Assassin's Creed 2, and the play, create, and share racing game all looked great. I'm also keeping an eye out for price drops on Fallout 3, Street Fighter 4, Little Big Planet, Legends of Wrestlemania, and a few others.

I had thought about getting a 360 for my birthday, but now might just buy PS3 games. I just got an original Xbox a couple weeks ago. I see no reason to hurry out and buy a 360 right now.

As for the list of games above, I'm not interested in any of them.

You totally gave Tekken 6 the shaft...another great game to be on the lookout for. I think SFIV is worth full price if you are a fan of the series. As for LoW, yeah, if that drops in price it is a definite buy.

God of War 3 is an auto purchase for anyone with a PS3.

It took a while, but I am hoping that this coming year puts some distance between the PS3 and XBox 360.

Areala's perspective: I don't think Sony is worried at all.

Valve has somehow managed to not make a great or interesting title since they grabbed up the rights to distribute Counter-Strike. Dull, dull, and more dull. Valve instead made Steam, which has ensured that I boycott them for all eternity. They don't want to develop for Sony? Good; I'd rather they just take the money from all the MS-kids out there.

Activision decides not to publish titles for Sony's console? I should care because? Look at that list of games: sequels, expansions and ripoffs of already existing franchises and properties. Do we REALLY need another Tony Hawk? Another THREE entries in the "I-can't-play-a-real-instrument-and-that-somehow-makes-me-a-Hero" line? Forgive me if I absolutely fail to give a crap about Transformers and Ice Age. And really, will we be out too much in terms of creative content should either of the two forthcoming Cabela's games fail to show up on shelves? And Modern Warfare 2...yeah, I'll weep if I can't play another generic wartime FPS game geared towards a multiplayer system that I'll never use. Big ol' fat tears there.

OK, so Wolfenstein might be fun. Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 could be decent. Singularity might surprise everybody. But that's an awful lot of "don't cares" and "maybes" to truly be upset if Activision just stopped supporting the PS3. No titles on there akin to God of War III, Assassin's Creed 2, or Dead Space 2 that could come anywhere close to being considered "killer apps".

Also: "Remember what not having EA did for Sega's Dreamcast?" Sure. It forced Sega Sports to become a contender. Remember NFL 2K grabbing all the attention away from Madden that year? Remember Tennis 2K rocking the socks of every editor who reviewed it? NHL 2K and 2K2 garnering all those 8s and 9s while EA's NHL 2001 and 2002 were earning 6s and 7s? I remember the year 2000, and I remember every Sega sports game fan LAUGHING at Playstation owners because they got some bad @$$ games for their console as opposed to the mediocre EA offerings. Consider this: Activision is not EA. Nowhere NEAR EA. Losing Activision would hurt, but it wouldn't matter in the long run. Losing Konami or Rockstar, that is a killing blow; losing Activision according to the list posted above just means there's fewer crap licensed movie titles cluttering up the PS3 shelves at my local game store. :)

The problem with losing a company like Activision is that they have a couple of very hot licenses right now in Guitar Hero and Tony Hawk. Sure TH is not as hot as he was back in the day but a lot of people still buy games with those two titles on them.

Sure they make a lot of fluff that most gamers could simply ignore and still live happy gaming lives but they bring a lot of casual, family gamers to the table too with their licenses.

Of course they are not as big as EA, no one is as far as 3rd parties go (I mean, technically, aren't they bigger than Sega?). They just hold a lot of clout right now and well, Sony can't afford to lose that many customers in the future.

Valve, well, I am not much of a FPS gamer so I don't really mind them that much, I respect the games they have released, just don't play them.
