How Will Nintendo Handle The 8th Generation?

Right now we are in the 7th Generation of video games, Nintendo has been in play since the 3rd Generation. We all know how Nintendo went with the Gamecube and the Wii.....but what do you think Nintendo will do for the successor to the Wii? Do we think they will still cater to the 5-15 year olds? Or will Nintendo put all its cards on the table and try to do what Sony did with the PS3? I am really hoping that they go for power next time instead of trying to cover what PS3 and 360 aren't.

Given that the Wii shows all signs of utterly dominating the 360 and PS3 this generation, I believe Nintendo has successfully found their niche and will be sticking to it for the forseeable future.

Honestly, I'd like to see Sony and Microsoft back off from the "everything in one box" model. I don't need a console that can browse the Internet (that's what my PC is for). I don't need a console that can serve as a media hub for my house. I don't need a console that can rip and play CDs or allow me to watch movies. All I need is a console that will let me do what consoles have been doing now for thirty years: play video games. That is, literally, ALL I need. Everything else is a waste.

You don't need power to make a classic, and often having access to more and more power means altering and ruining tried and true formulas. Nintendo went back to basics, ignored the two heavies who were beating the crap out of one another in the center ring, and performed an end-run around both of them and emerged as the winner this generation. I see no reason for them to do otherwise in another few years. :)

I could not agree more!

I like eye candy but it's not everything. This is my problem with the 360 and especially the PS3. Most of the games look great but just arn't very fun. I love the way the Wii has really changed the way games are played and breathed new life into old genres.

With the new Wii HD I can almost beat that they will not go EDTV again it will end up being HD.

I just miss the days of the Super Nintendo, when we had THE BEST games AND THE BEST Graphics!!!!!

Nintendo proved you could do both.....let them do it again!

I was pretty disappointed when I found out that the Wii was a beefed up GameCube. I was hoping it would have had a bit more power, although they do very well with what they have. But despite that, it's such an excellent system! I never cease to be surprised by the fun things they keep doing with it.

I don't like the all-in-one approach either, but I hope Nintendo tries to compete at least a little more in the online play dept. The whole friend code thing is a bit of a hassle.

On the 360, I like the online play a lot better and the fact that I can watch instant Netflix movies. I also know that more teens are turned on by all the mindless first-person shooters on the system, so that's a big seller for the 360. Other than that, Wii is the most fun I have aside from my DS.

I haven't even touched PS3 yet. It's just not very appealing to me. Too high of a price and only a few games I'd like to play. I don't care about Blu-Ray or media centers. Like Areala said, I have my PC for that.

Now that I'm away from my what I consider home town since lived there for more than 15 years of my life one thing that I wish someone would do for the 360. Especially Capcom for SF4. Make it so you can have a party room so you can get like 8 friends together and play Street Fighter IV and all be talking to each other and switching off playing matches and while your not playing you could be watching a the match and commenting on the fight.

The thing that amazed me about the SNES, is how much they managed to squeeze out of it in terms of graphics, thanks to the Super FX chips, which increased it's shelflife a lot.

Having said that, I honestly don't know what to expect next from Nintendo.

Something else to consider is that Sony and Microsoft will surely have learned from what Nintendo did, and may try and build the same kind of Ningenuity (remember those adverts, anyone lol!?) into their next console. Therefore, it may not be enough for Nintendo to try to recreate what they did with the Wii.

Having said that, no-one does what Nintendo do as well as Nintedo do it!

Does anyone think that Nintendo will try to get there before Sony and Microsoft, to get a head start?

Hey Thor, I think on 360 you can get a party together. In-game, hit your XBOX button and it'll open a grey box. Switch to where it shows "Friends" etc., and you should be able to make/join a party there. I recently used this to play with my friend of 15 yrs on Ghostbusters.

Microsoft is coming out with a controller-less gimmick for the X360. Right now it looks kind of stupid to me but could shape up into something.

If you have a beefed up PC, a version of the Dolphin emu is running Wii games in 720p now.

Nintendo to me, like most on here, will always be near and dear cause I grew up with it. They need to stop underestimating there American fanbase and start releasing more ports (and accessories) from Japan.

I have a feeling Nintendo will just come up with rehashes of previous gen titles like they have been doing for years. A new Super Mario + gimmick? A new Kid Icarus + gimmick? I'll pass.

Yeah you can have a chat party but not a game party. On SF4 you can only do 1 vs 1 with no spectators.

That's actually what I'm expecting and interested in.

As opposed to what? New FPS + gimmick? New FPS + no gimmick, just the same old stuff again? New third person shooter + gimmick? New GTA + gimmick? New Resident Evil + gimmick?....

I think Nintendo should stick with what they are doing. Them catering to the younger audience is good. If they don't someone else will. What is the point of them doing the exact same thing as Sony and Microsoft? Why have three of the same thing? They've been successful. They tried catering to the older crowd with the Gamecube and finished last. It's just not their thing. I think they will continue on a similar path. They'll add more power, for HD and more on screen characters/zombies/items/etc. But there is no real need for them to go nuts. sure, the better eye candy would be nice, but the most important thing is that they keep putting out their style of games in the quality they are known for. Limiting the amount of shovelware crap being put out on the next system would be nice, but if it's making money, they won't do it.

I just hope they will have a wii fit board for fat people. How the hell I am supposed to lose weight if the damn thing won't let me on it to begin with. Stupid skinny Japanese people. Seriously though, games are trying to look so real now but I think there will be a trend when a game looks like a game. Cell shaded graphics are still being modified and played with all the time. Look at the new Red Steel. Games don't have to look real to be cool and have good graphics. It takes a certain team to create games like this and I think the future of gaming will head in that direction at least for Nintendo.
