A Question For Contributors

I'm currently scanning for my first submission, and I have a few questions.

First, what resolution are you using. The pages themselves are 8"x10.75" (pre-cropped), the DPI is set to 300 and the default resolution is set to 2390x3207. I can scale to any resolution, so that isn't a problem.

Second, I'm having trouble creating .cbr files. I understand the basics (I use WinRAR, so I save as .cbr), but everytime I try to open it in CDisplay it says that it contains no image files.

Third, this is directly related to the second question, but what format do I save the images as when I create the .cbr file? The program I'm using, Paperport (which came with the scanner) has three (six if you count multi-page) versions of .tiff: uncompressed, Group 4, and Class F. I'm confused. Before I found this website I was saving my archives as extremely high-res .jpegs, so this new process (not the one in the wiki showing personal scanner settings but the other FAQ floating around the site) is a bit confusing.

I'll be stopping my current scanning (Game Informer 45) and resuming my personal scanning (Game Informer Year 2002&2003), because I want this submission to fit the standards of the website.

1. 1440 pixels wide. Or if you are ambitious (or it's a small magazine), you can do 1600 wide.

2. Use WinRAR to save a .zip file. Then just change the file extension in Windows.

3. Save the images as JPG for the cbr. Image Quality between 8 and 10 is good.

:)

I use 1440 width and is what I was recommended. When you open the cbr file with winrar, do you see any images? For the image format, if your scanner uses .tiff, always use it until your edit is finalized, then save as "9" quality jpeg and bicubic (best for image reduction). That's just what I recommend and what I read here also when I first started. Scan a few then zip into cbr/cbz file, send pm to phillyman or triverse and take it from there.

Hey Bomb, welcome to Retromags, great to have another contributor here.

E-day and Tony_32 are spot on with the advice so I won't confuse you with more. I do have one concern though, are you planning on releasing those Game Informers from 2002 and 2003? Those are past our cut-off here and can not be accepted (our current stop date is December 1999).

Thanks very much for everyone's input, I'll be using it tonight.

As for the post-2000 Game Informers, I will not be releasing these magazines, as they are part of my private archiving project. While I do have some pre-2000 magazines, the bulk of my collection are post-2000 Game Informers, OPM, and PC gaming magazines. Maybe sometime in the future, when people get nostalgic for the PS2-era magazines (and the last real era of gaming magazines) there will be room for them.
