So, where is Retromags at?

Where are we at, for this site as a whole?

Is this site better than it was 5 months ago?

Do we have more mags on this site than 5 months ago?

Do we have a larger or smaller userbase on here than 5 months ago?

These are the burning questions. Has there been progress? Has the site grown? Let's hear from you.

Here's my take. When I showed up 5 months ago, Triverse and Meppi contributed alot in regards to posting. They posted alot. Phillyman, Triverse & Meppi kept the front page updated every Monday which I looked forward to.

When they left they took a few others with them it seemed, and there were many days when nothing was said or done except new magazines which have seemingly been added every day.

There's been an average of 30 guests online at all times which tells me there are more people interested in watching than signing up.

With the loss of all the Rapidshare links and the limit of 100 MB's for direct downloads from RM, the site has taken a hit.

Alot of topics have been beat to death on all the gaming websites so it's hard for alot of people to start something new.

This sort of topic is quite subjective and is based upon the members persoanl experiences. In my opinion for example ....

1. Where are we at, for this site as a whole?

I think there are some issues around Phillyman not being around much lately which have resulted in the site appearing to be lacking updates as he is the only one able to adjust the homepage for example and we still have references to Premium memberships from months ago. This tends to make the site look out of date.

2. Is this site better than it was 5 months ago?

The shift to the new site is a positive one IMHO. But even more so I personally think that Meppi & Triverse leaving has been a positive one as there were definitely personality issues playing out back then. I am not saying anything bad about anyone but as an affected party I am a lot happier with the current site than the old.

3. Do we have more mags on this site than 5 months ago?

Hard to tell. I think Meppi/Triverse may have deleted a lot of their stuff when leaving as there are definitely pre-2000 mags missing now that were here before. Then there are the mags removed because they hadn't been edited with no signs of a return anytime soon. But on the other side of the coin I have got permission from some scanners to make their mags available here .... Analog Computing is an example .. Enter mag is another one coming soon ... and I am scanning again which would never have happened while Meppi was here so expect my 300+ mags over time. AND I am making all my mag submissions into PDF's and available for download via Rapidshare while .CBR's are available via direct download for members. I assume at some stage Phillyman will make all the CBR's available on Megaupload but he's AWOL so when that'll happen is again, anyone's guess.

4. Do we have a larger or smaller userbase on here than 5 months ago?

Who knows? Do you really care? As long as we have a core group of members happy to talk mags etc I personally don't care as people spamming posts just to download mags are not the sort of people I thought we wanted here anyway.

The forum is ceertainly more dead than 5 months aog. Phillyman has also been AWOL a lot lately.

I think there are more magazines now than 5 months ago, though I do not know for sure. When triverse was talking to Steve Harris for an interview for this site, we hid all the unedited EGM magazines because there were A LOT, and it might have looked bad in his eyes. Most of them were scanned by Phillyman using the auto document feeder on his all-in-one, who still has al lthe pages. He said he would rescan them on the flatbed, but who knows when that will be since there are a lot to scan, and we all know he gets distracted and slacks off now and then ;).

I have an interivew with former GamePro editor Sid Shuman which I will be putting up soon, so at least the front page will change.

We just need people (myself included) to pick up the slack left by triverse and meppi. But it's hard t obe motivated to do things on the site when the owner has barely been around :P

I know I have been absent for a while. The entire deal with meppi and triverse left me hollow and exhausted. I am still slowly recovering from that week.....it took its toll on me. Thank you to everyone who has kept coming back here and helping make this site better. I am trying to get back into the grove of things, I am going through my PM box right now answering questions and such. I need to prioritize what is important and knock it down 1 item at a time. I have been procrastinating the past few months, time to get some things done around here. E-day you up for editing GamePro issue 3? My girl is going to a b-day party on Saturday and I will be home alone. I can pass it along once I get it scanned.

I am definitely up for editing Issue 3, and any others you may have scanned or will scan. Is issue 3 the one you were supposed to scan a couple of months ago? Or was there another?

I have 2 more Videogaming & Computergaming Illustrated issues to do. One of them's already zipped up & uploaded before, but not on the site. I'll just directly upoload it. The other one? I still gotta scrounge around for it. Then there's still about 3 other misc mags I'm going to try putting up.

Also that buyer's guide from 1983. I have not forgotten. It's a fascinating insight into consumer electronics with insanely high prices to what is considered obsolete now.

Glad that this thread has been brought to my attention.

I strongly resent such lies being spread around as such a thing never happened.

Philly can attest to that.

That being said, if it were up to me I would choose to have my files removed at this point in time, especially when looking at a certain agenda being pushed these past few weeks.

But than again I know such a thing will never happen as certain people find too much joy in keeping them online here just to try and get to me, to do such a thing.

And no, I'm certainly not talking about Philly.

When you signed up here and anyone who signs up here, you are agreeing that any submissions will become property of Retromags. They will always be your scan and you will always get credit. You are encouraged to share your scans anywhere you like but once they are posted here, they stay forever.

You're stating the site's "rules" to me? How cute. <_<

So the scans become the official property of retromags?

Would you be willing to put that in writing? That might get interesting if certain people came to read that statement...

Sigh...here we go again.

Meppi didn't delete any magazines. People who submit scans agree to let Retromags distribute them and keep them on the site, regardless of whether that member leaves the site or not. By law, they belong to the copyright holder.

It's been nice and quiet areound here lately. Let's not start yet another tired argument about trivial things.

What about those who gave scan submissions to a member on here and didn't sign up for the site? The first mags I submitted to here I gave to triverse. That was before I signed up here. Also, I don't recall seeing such end user agreement that anything becomes property of retromags.

It needs to be defined what is "property of retromags", as they are scans of magazines that other companies(the publishers) have an actual copyright to, as opposed to just saying it becomes "property". That would also open up liabilities.

As for staying on forever, didn't some users that got kicked off the site(I believe for using other peoples' scans as their own), the mags were removed from the site as well?

As for me & whatever I have contributed, I'm doing it for the love of the hobby. I was surprised & elated a bit to see my handle(s1500) in one of the other retro gaming publications mentioning my scans fo Videogaming & Comptuergaming Illustrated. But if that didn't happen, I would have been cool with that too. There's no fame & fortune scanning these things in(nor "serious business"). It's all just for fun & nostalgia.

I don't mean to step on your toes. I was young once too and have been fired for my own shortcomings. I was even small enough to throw a fit and looking back I'm ashamed of my behavior and wish I could turn back time but I have to let go and learn from my mistakes. :notworthy:

As for having this in writing. When I signed up which wasn't as long ago as you, I signed this page.

I hope Triverse added the info on the download page which gives credit to the scanner, editor and all that other info I hate doing. This seems only like good etiquette to me. I thought you guys new this stuff.

Please look at who is throwing mud at who again and then come to a conclusion about placing the blame.

You are absolutely correct.

I was in fact the one who removed the members magazines due to him making that request at the time.

My decisions was however overruled and the scans were put back online to piss the person in question off.

So that's a pretty sad precedent.

I don't mean to step on your toes. I was young once too and have been fired for my own shortcomings. I was even small enough to throw a fit and looking back I'm ashamed of my behavior and wish I could turn back time but I have to let go and learn from my mistakes. :notworthy:

No offense taken. I was in a bit of a bad mood due to the stuff above being implied... Sorry.

Rules may be rules, but when they go against common sense, not to mention respect towards the members, that's where I have always personally drawn the line.

I could in fact counter that picture of these rules by saying that I never agreed to any of them when I signed up on this site so many years ago, so I fail to see how it would matter in this case.

I just read it as him not knowing better because he wasn't around when the unedited magazines were removed, and had made an assumption that you removed them upon leaving. If it was a legitimate dig at you, then that is a different story.

My comment about it being nice and quiet around here was directed at everyone, myself included :)

One last thing.

I just feel the need to put this one right as well, since Triverse can't defend himself here since his posting privileges have been removed.

I put the correct information in each category, in over 80 issues that I edited over there for other members.

So please look up these kinds of things before putting something like that out in the open and make us look like unscrupulous types.

God.. get over it you guys. How old are you? :jester:

Anyways, my take on the site is that it seems to have grown, and of course we have more magazines up than a few months ago, even if some were taken down for whatever reason. We have some dedicated scanners/editors here and they pump out mags one after another(or a lot at one time). There should be no way we're behind what we were 5 months ago.

Yes, there are a lot of guests that show up, but we're also gaining new members too. I'm sure once people take a taste of what RM has to offer, they think it's a good idea to join. We have a few interesting conversations and site exclusive topics that are of interest. A few people seem to want to contribute, too, but sometimes they need better instruction and a finished/updated FAQ/Guide to scanning, editing and uploading which Philly is currently working on.

The site altogether is definitely better. Petty bickering is at a low to zero, and we should keep it that way by being the physically(and hopefully somewhat mentally :P ) mature people that we are. The only problem is that now there seems to be a lack of communication. People aren't posting or sharing ideas or news as much, and I don't know why. I understand news is found elsewhere, and that's fine, this is a retro site after all, but I don't understand why people aren't contributing as much to conversations as a couple of months ago. I used to read tons of updates every day, but now I'm lucky to find a good reply in three days.

I am glad meppi is still around at least reading topics, though!

Geez!!! E-Day was entirely correct. After our shindig I wasn't around here much AT ALL ... you know what it's like when you get pissed off at a place/person.

When I got back I noticed a lot of mags had been pulled and assumed you guys may have removed them. Operative word here is "MAY".

But really Meppi .... all you had to do was PM me and let me know & I would've edited my original post to reflect the reality. Instead you had to go to town again over what was a rather innocuous & non-malicious reply about how we felt about the site compared to a few months ago. Seriously, do you think I harbour some sort of vendetta against you when I have been actively praising you guys and your site not just here but on other forums? And telling people how great your scans are? I guess your "informant" only wanted to pass on "the bad" at the end of the day.

Sigh!!!

Meppi is correct, neither he nor Triverse deleted any magazines from the download section. Meppi when this all went down, I offered to remove your submissions. While I appreciate you leaving them on Retromags.....I will still honor that offer. All of this has left me drained, I wish I could turn back the clock and do things differently. I am not only talking about D-Day but even way before that, at this point if we cant mend friendships....I would just like to move on from this point. It does neither of us any good to continue going back and forth.....if the end result is not a friendship again.

My offer stands for Triverse also, his posting privileges are have been reinstated for what its worth.

Take it easy Phillyman.

It was me ... not you ... that provoked this little outburst so don't get too worried about it. As I said earlier, I wasn't coming here much at all for a long period of time & because I wasn't reading the forums I had no idea what happened at the time of their leaving. All I did know was that when I did come back a lot of mags were missing. Considering I'd asked for mine to be removed when I left I assumed that "MAY" have been the case for those guys too given the apparent animosity at the time. And I wouldn't have blamed them for making the request either.

But as I said to Meppi .... if he'd just PM'd me about it I would've changed my post. I would've even apologised. Instead he took offence as he always seems to do whenever he's mentioned and decided to have a go. You know, it's hard to figure the mentality of those guys. I have made posts on the shoutbox & forums here and elsewhere commenting on the great quality of their work and promoting them whenever a new mag is released at their site and they have nothing to say, but when you make one rather innocuous remark out of ignorance they get all shitty about it.

No doubt this will get back to them and they'll probably take it the wrong way yet again. Which is a shame as I've always had the highest regard for their work preserving old magazines both here or at OoPA.

Thank you.

I've sent you a PM and you'll see why... my rant has already been proven as well it seems. <_<

Just wanted to add here as well that I'm not angry at you anymore, in fact I'm sorry about the BS you have to deal with in the past but also at this very moment.

blah blah

I see that underneath an extra veil of innocence, you haven't changed a single bit.

You may fool most people who don't know how you play your little mind games, but you won't fool me again.

I'm done with this.

Hmmm ... so I say I would've changed my post ... even apologised ... and how could that could be negative? Anyone care to enlighten me on that?

Ohh ... and I say that they do good work at OoPA ..... and that's negative too? Same question applies?

And I posted this on Atariage forum

"Always great to see people working to preserve classic magazines to ensure they aren't lost forever. A lot of people don't appreciate just how much work it takes people like Meppi & Triverse to get magazines looking this nice. Looking forward to seeing what this Friday brings"

I guess I have some hidden agenda there too?

Ahh .... I guess he's moaning about the fact that I said he get's shitty when he doesn't like what someone says? Well .... guess what? I stand by that based upon his comments here and he's done nothing to make me change my mind about that.

I truly hope you are done with this Meppi. Just move on if you can't take apologies or any sort of criticism at all. I'm not normally given to rants but you certainly bring that out in me I'll give you that. If I thought any better I'd think you were just trying to get Phillyman to ban me again as he has no-one else contributing as much as I do to the site at the present time so it would put a dent in the magazine uploads here. Well ... if he truly thinks that it is for the best then he'll do it. I don't really care .... I had enough of petty admins with you and Triverse although I HOPE he is better than you were. Still ..... His loss if he isn't.

What irks me is the people here not prepared to say what they really feel about things around here. That was the point of this post in the first place. It's a sad state of affairs when less than a handful of people are game enough to stand up and be counted. It doesn't matter whether they like it better now or before but if they don't voice an opinion what a waste of time this is as Phillyman can't get some feedback on what might be done better. Hell, I think I even stated that Phillyman wasn't pulling his weight recently. The point is constructive criticism is beneficial and people should be able to voice an opinion if it is in the interests of the site as a whole.

My personal comments re this place still stand. It's definitely better for you leaving Meppi .... well .... I thought you'd left ....
