Help Identifying a Game

Okay, I know we have a pretty strong group of gamers here, so I'm hoping that can be of use here. My fiancee remembers playing a game for NES where you can choose between a male of female character and you are given a mission by a woman and text scroll across the botom of the screen. Then you are beamed down to earth. The female character looks like Jem and has a knife for a weapon. The first level has spikes and is underground.

This one has me stumped. I've looked through lists of every NES game avaiable(according to the Wikipedia entry, anyways) and I didn't even find anything really similar to that. At one point she thought it might have been Metroid, but it doesn't fit all the criteria. It's also possible that she might be putting a few different games together and this game isn't even real. I seem to remember playing a game like this sometime, too. It possibly could have been for SNES, which would widen the possibilities, but she swears it was for NES. Help!

The only one I can think of with those qualities is Strider for the NES. But you cant pick to be a man or a woman. The only game I remember you can pick a man or a woman is Shadow of the Ninja. But it doesn't fit.

My first thought on this was S.C.A.T. - Special Cybernetic Attack Team, but while it features both a male and female as playable characters, the mission is not assigned by a woman, the first level is not underground, and features no spikes.

Strider, like Gnash said, fits everything save for the whole "picking a guy or a girl" bit, though it might be a bit confusing as the intro sequence features both a male and a female "Strider" in addition to the character you play as. Hiryu, your character, has long hair (a bit like Jem) and carries a sword called the Cypher into battle. The guy who gives you your orders also has long hair and looks like a woman, and Hiryu then "beams down" to earth from his dragon ship. The first level takes place in a large factory/warehouse-type environment and spikes do feature as a hazard, though they aren't everywhere.

Show her this and see if it's what she was thinking of:
