I sure hope the rumors of a home Sega console are true. Traditionally Sega has ported their arcade architecture to the home console. The Sega Mega-Tech was ported to Mega Drive, Sega ST-V to Saturn, and the Sega NAOMI to Dreamcast. Sega's newer Arcade board, Lindbergh is embedded with Linux. The Ring series that follows continues the trend of using PC parts because of cost effectiveness. Ring Edge is the strongest of the boards, the later being Ring Wide. A Russian website has revealed information claiming that SEGA have signed a new deal with UK Based technology firm: Imagination Technologies, to work on a chip set for a very graphically high-tech next generation games console.

SEGA shared, that their plans are for a new console to be a direct competitor to the next generation of products from Sony and Microsoft. The company believe that with more development over time, they will be able to defeat the two giants and take a larger share of the market.”

Imagination Technologies have released a Press Release regarding a demonstration of their latest Stereoscopic 3D (S3D) graphics and display technologies:

“The demonstrations, at an Imagination event at the British Embassy in Seoul Korea on June 10th 2010, make use of the powerful rendering capabilities of Imagination’s POWERVR SGX graphics acceleration family and the video decode and enhancement capabilities of the POWERVR VXD video decoder and FRC frame rate conversion IP cores.

The high performance POWERVR SGX graphics acceleration cores are ideally suited to S3D graphics, either using single or multi-processor cores for resolutions up to full 1080P HD, and are capable of supporting all commonly used S3D formats such as frame sequential, side-by-side, top-bottom and interlaced.

Using SGX it is possible to quickly upgrade existing 3D content to deliver full S3D, bringing new realism to 3D games and navigation, and exciting new possibilities for user interfaces in a wide range of applications.

If this rumour is to be believed, SEGA would be in the process of developing a high-spec 3D games console that would directly compete with the Playstation 4 and Xbox 720. SEGA has not released any official word that such a deal is in place, so this news post will be regarded as a rumor until proven otherwise.

There have been rumors about the names as well. SegaDrive is what they use at Ringedge Ringwide blog also stating some specifications. I have heard Sega would be using a double layer Blu-Ray disc with a solid state drive and a quad-core i7 but this is all vapourware.

I think it's 100% untrue. Sega is doing fine as a publisher only. And coming out with a new console when there are already three on the market would be foolish. I don't think the market can support four home consoles. The financial risk is too high, considering their games would again be restricted to one consoles instead of 5.

Maybe these dealing are for some new arcade units. I read somewhere and I'm trying to find the source which isn't a big name who said that Sony said if after their Playstation 4 gets released and does as poorer than expected, somewhat like PS3, they will get out of the console hardware for good.

It's hard to believe this as I can't easily find information like this anywhere like Kotaku or Gamespot but if this rumor was true, it would leave only two console plaforms. Or I can just keep dreaming . Pun Intended. Why would Sega renew their patent on the name Dreamcast?

Even arcade units, I don't know. Apart from Japan, arcades are petty much dead.

Maybe Sega's renewed patent has to do with them releasing Dreamcast games on Xbox Live and The PlayStation Network. I honestly don't see them making a console with three strong ones already on the market. I'd like a new Sega console, but I don't see it happening.

The idea is interesting... Four consoles on the market at once? (Depending on what the other three companies decide to do; could very well be a 2 vs. 2 competition, depending on release times) I'd be grabbing up gaming magazines just to read about the heat going on, though I don't really expect an actual console to appear. I think Sega consoles were just an experiment for the company and ultimately publishing is far more profitable and safe.

I could consider maybe a handheld console from them, since the handheld market is ripe for competition. Nintendo really only holds makes its money with Pokemon and holds afloat between releases with fairly average sales. Sega could probably do it right since it's a lot more of a controlled market.

You're joking, right? Nintendo makes money on all the games they release for the DS, and the consoles themselves. Mario Kart and New Super Mario DS are constantly on the Top 20 sales charts.

I'm not saying they don't make money on the DS and certain titles, but Pokemon is their killer app... Many people buy the DS simply to play Pokemon. Everything else is secondary income.

Pardon my typing I'm using my ZuneHD. Last two ttimes there were rumors of new Sega console it ended up as a plug'n play. The other was new arcade hardware. So yeah I doubt this would ever happen.

I think things would have to bottom out of the market to the point where there is only one home console left (probably Nintendo), before they actually seriously considered getting back in.

Having their own console would improve their games; they'd put more effort into them again.

I would totally buy it....I mean, the same 3 companies for 8 years (I know they have been doing an excellent job), but don't you think another console would really stir things up!

The Dreamcast kicked the PS2's ass graphically. It was piss poor marketing on SEGA's part that had a big hand in its demise. Soul Calibur on Dreamcast is still considered by a lot of people to be the best fighting game ever released. Personally ..... if I were SEGA I would look at re-releasing it but using a DVD drive for cheaper drive costs/manufacturing etc. The graphics are still more than competitive even today ..

Still .... I don't think they will release a new console .....

So, if it were true, that Sega was releasing a new console/handheld, would anyone be there to buy it?  Have they done too much damage to the image of say, Sonic, to really use him as an exclusive mascot for games to push a new system or is there still magic left in his sneakers?

I'd probably get it just for the novelty of it and to support a new entrant into the console industry. I'd be interested in seeing the dynamic of four consoles competing in a single generation.

If I can afford it I want to buy one of those "New Dreamcast" consoles on E-Bay more than I want a "new" console to be honest. RETRO all the way for me .... unless that fiery bird you keep harping on about is a reference to SEGA resurrecting the Dreamcast in which case I would be interested.
