When it comes to video games, it's easy to get caught up in franchise mania. Certainly at this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo, games with numbers in their title seemed to hog most of the spotlight. Crysis 2, Gears of War 3, LittleBigPlanet 2, Killzone 3 — we're lookin' at you.

E3 has been like that for a long time. It's always sequels that overwhelm everything else. You can go back to the first E3, or ever the summer CES before it to see that. But sometimes a game has been absent for so long that a new game in that franchise is more like an original game than a sequel. kid Icarus, for instance.

And I predict next year's over-hyped E3 will have Nintendo offering all sorts of new things: Metroid, Mario Bros, Zelda, ad nauseum.
