Best Cheap Cpu

I'm looking for a CPU that best mixes performance and price. Actually, better put, I'd like to get a barebones kit that does this. Looking to spend maybe $200-$300 on the kit, expandability should be placed with a premium, both in drives and slots.

Thoughts from anyone?

Aw man, if you're lucky you may find a Core 2 Quad Q6600 for under $300, but right now the demand is so high that the price jumped up a few as 75$ more.

Now I'm waiting even longer for the price to go back down.
