Animal Crossing: New Leaf is the fourth game in the Animal Crossing series. It's a life simulator, similar to games like The Sims, with the player taking on the role of mayor of a small town populated by anthropomorphic animals. New Leaf features a number of improvements and additions from previous games in the series, which include:

• The ability, as mayor, to enact ordinances and public work projects that change the way the town works and looks
• An expanded wardrobe, allowing for greater character customization options
• More options for expanding and customizing your home, including the ability to change the style of the outside of your house
• Streetpass allows players to show off their homes and purchase items from the homes of other players
• A new island to visit for fishing, bug hunting, and multiplayer-focused minigames
• The ability to swim in the ocean
• An expanded roster of animal residents
• A small city area with new buildings that players can unlock
• The ability to create custom exhibits on the second floor of the newly expanded museum
