  2. I am going to attempt to use my old, slow flatbed scanner to scan: GamePro Issue 90 (labeled 100) January 1997. I'm not sure how it will turn out - if it turns out - but we'll see!

  3. Here's all the stuff that I eventually plan to scan. Mags that have "???" listed for the month do not have the month printed anywhere on or in the magazine and could not be discerned. Some of these mags may not be scanned anytime in the near future as they are very wide and would not fit on a standard scanner (Amiga World, Amiga Format, Next Generation, etc). If you have any Electronic Games or Electronic Fun/Computer Fun issues that aren't listed and you want them scanned please let me know. Nintendo Power: (Nintendo of America, Inc.) 4. Due to some rumblings in the back of the site, I have no idea if I will keep releasing my issues under this banner or not. If there's no coming back for me you'll always be able to find my future work here, unless a certain someone deletes the link, which wouldn't even surprise me at this point. This 1st post will be updated as I get started on new scans. I will also keep updating the % of each magazine that I'm currently working on. Once a magazine has been completed, it will be posted along with download links and a preview image in the Magazine Releases section of the board. I'll be rescanning my old magazines in between working on new magazines, and once I have re-edited or completely re-scanned and uploaded an issue, I will add "completed +release date" to differentiate between the new and the old versions. Once a new version has been released I will remove the old one from the server so you don't have to worry about mixing the 2 up. The new ones will generally be a bit larger in size due to the higher quality as well. I have started using new editing techniques which work much better on either black or white pages, this way black pages will actually be black and not grey and white ones won't have any of the nasty yellowing that sometimes can be found around the edges of certain pages. I will also take greater care about finding and removing dust particles as well as other spots and stuff that shouldn't be on there. And finally thanks to the new "Vibrance" tool in CS4 and the correct settings at which this will be used, the colours of the magazines will be as close tot the original as I can possibly make them. You might have noticed that the saturation process of before did quite a good job of making the pages look vibrant, but it only seemed to target the warm colour spectrum. Now with the combination of a lower saturation level along with a 50% Vibrance boost, the full spectrum finally gets the attention it deserves. You will be able to tell them apart from the new thank you page at the end of the magazine, at the bottom right of this page there will also be a date. That way you can check which version you have. The ones without a date are the old ones. and also from the fact that the name of the month in the title will be written in full from now on. The pages will be resized to a width of 1440 instead of 1280 and they will also be much cleaner than the previous version, thanks to y new equipment. 10. Since it's been like 3 months since I did anything significant with the Wiki, I figured it was time to add another drop in our bucket. And since it's a Dreamcast anniversary, I thought I'd find a magazine that dealt with a bunch of Dreamcast reviews/previews. To wit: Game Informer 78 has now been drained of its pitiful Stub status and fully indexed! Any comments or questions, you know where to direct 'em. Edit: now Game Informer 84 has been indexed as well. It's hard to stop once you've started. *huggles* Areala

  14. Thanks Phillyman and Tony, that about clears up most of my concerns that I had with contributions. I looked over my scans I archived on DVD last night (and didn't get a lot done because of that, heh) and about 60% of them are edited and cleaned up (I have well over 600+ individual scans of various things from advertisements, to fanzines from various companies, and other odds and ends) so those are ready to go right this minute. I noticed while looking over some of my Sunsoft ones last night, that I had marked on some of the items as well as name labels being on the items, I read another member who recommended removing them, my only comment there is I will obscure them so the address is not included, but I neither have time or inclination to rescan any of those items by removing those labels and any writing on them (I was 12 whadda want) ;-) If someone has the photo shop magic touch to clean them up, more power to 'em, I edit with HP's image editor and Paint, old school I know, but it serves my purposes, I have Photo Shop, but after one use and it's extreme learning curve I uninstalled it and never looked back. Also a lot of these were in boxes for over 20 years and actually kept in a cool, dark environment but even with that care, the paper they used yellowed badly (or more than I would have cared it too) but never to make the items unreadable or unusable (hence my wanting to archive them digitally, and also the purpose of this project, as I see) also and unbeknownst to me they were pinned under some magazines resulting in some nasty bending of the material I tried to straighten them out when I scanned them a few years ago, but the results were adequate at best for the amount of time I spent working on scanning them. But all the material is there (with the exception of a coupon I hacked out of one to continue to get the newsletter (one of my Sega Visions suffered that same fate unfortunately) I will upload a few samples either tonight or in the next few days to show you the work, due to my internet connection here at the house any major uploads of my material will have to wait until school starts and I get access to the better connection speed. I could do some of the Sunsoft and Neo Geo ones as they are fairly small (6-8 scans per issue) and it wouldn't be too much of a burden in that regard. And lastly I know I kinda hinted at it above, but the material that is already archived is as-is, it is stuff I did for my own personal use, never to be used or given away by me, so as such I really don't want to redo any of it, I personally think it looks fine (I know some of my scans have white lines in the scan, you'll see when I upload certain scans) but there is nothing I can do about that, it is a unfortunate quirk my scanner has if there is a lot of either white paper being scanned or white color being close to an edge, can't complain I guess as the scanner was given to me by a friend for free years ago, and it's something I've learned to tolerate for better or worse. Anyway, I'll put a few pieces up and see if it is stuff you guys are interested in, if time permits and I move forward with new material to scan, I will take time to increase quality (if need be) but note I'll still be limited by the hardware I own. Check back soon...Onwards and upwards.

  15. Baseline standard has the most compatibility for web browsers. Baseline Optimized is smaller but less compatibility with old web browsers and Linux systems but not PDF readers. Baseline progressive has the least compatibility but I'm not sure about that one. When I save Jpegs with Photoshop I always choose 0 quality and optimized. A higher quality I believe is only necessary if you plan to re-edit the file. These are 4 of the same scans I took. One is Baseline optimized quality 0, Two is Baseline Standard quality 12, 3 is optimized quality 12 and 4 is standard quality 0. I can't notice a difference in a PDF reader between Standard Quality 12 and Optimized quality 0. The only difference is optimized qualito 0 is 194 KB and Standard quality 12 is 5,290 KB. Optimized Quality 12 4,994 KB Optimized quality 0 194 KB Standard Quality 12 5,290 KB Standard Quality 0 224 KB

  16. It gets it perfectly most times, before I taped black construction paper to the lid on the inside. Since then it crops around the excess c.paper. But without it, yeah, it did a really good job almost everytime. But because EGM used the cheapest, thinnest paper possible, almost every page bleeds through, so the construction paper is a necessity. Otherwise cropping in photoshop would be very minimal. Now I just have it scan the whole bed. I haven't tried it with a stapled magazine. With those I suspect it would crop around the edge except where the staple is. It looks for the white background of the lid and crops around anything that isn't it. And it does a hell of a job printing photos too.

  18. I scanned this in at the same time I scanned in EG Vol. 1 No. 4 and figured I would sneak this in real quick since it was pretty small and easy. Still editing EG Vol. 1 No. 4 and it shouldn't be much longer. Anyway, from June 1982 comes...

  20. It would be interesting to see a timeline comparison against all the magazines on a time line. Also, it would be a nice way to index magazines by the times they were published. You could find the longest run mags, shortest runs, times with the most amount of magazines in publication, the least, etc. I've seen timelines for car makes & models on wikipedia before, so a template should easily exist.

  22. This is the 4th issue in a series of re-scans I'm doing for all the Maximum magazines. Besides the pages being 1440 wide now instead of 1280, they also have been color corrected and touched up more diligently. Also, these are brand new scans of the issues, so not just cleaned up ones from last time. The magazines have been debinded to increase the quality of the scans even more. 24. Phew, finally finished EG Vol 2. No. 6 (Aug 1983). Next up is Vol. 1 No. 2 (Mar 1982) which I am hoping to have done relatively quickly. Update 06/21/09, 9:30pm: Scanning & Editing completed. Mag has been uploaded.

  25. Stepping back in time a little bit, PSM Issue 4 indexed. Special shoutouts to Phillyman and Triverse for uploading/editing these early issues, which has allowed me to move outside my collection and index stuff I'd never even seen before. I'm putting your bandwidth to good use, I promise. Note: if somebody wanted to replace the current cover image on the Wiki with the cover scan included in the download here, we'd lose the big white bar that runs down the left side of the picture. I'd do it, but I'm not 100% sure how to go about uploading pictures just yet. There's the picture, so you don't have to DL the whole magazine. *huggles* Areala

  28. I think it looks perfect. [edit] I did make one addition to it. I'm sure you'll see it when you go back into the page

  29. Going out on my own a bit here, but we'll see what y'all think. I found a couple of my old PSM magazines, and I threw together an index for issue 18. Check it out, let me know if there's anything I need to improve, and if not, I've got one or two more I can index. PSM Issue 18 *huggles* Areala

  30. Infoboxes added to the first 28 issues of PSM Magazine (which brings the Wiki current through the 1999 year for that magazine). Thanks, Phillyman, for the assistance.

  31. Now we're starting to get into some really awesome things from here on out. Features on games like Grandia, Panzer Dragoon Saga, Burning Rangers, Shining Force 3. Hope you enjoy it as much as I do. Official Sega Saturn Magazine 029 - march 1998 (UK) Download page here. Rapidshare link

  33. Just saw GamePro Issue 8 March 1990 on eBay; saw that no one here had it, so I grabbed it. It will be my next scan when it arrives. And because it cost me $20, I won't be taking out the staples and slicing it up

  34. Consider it done. Your advice about boosting saturation by 20% did wonders. Thanks babe!

  35. I'd go with the first one without a doubt. The saturation in that one just looks about perfect. On the second one which seems a bit brighter the colors almost seems a bit washed out. Not quite washed out, but getting close to it. Hard to explain actually.

  36. Next up: GamePro Issue 68, March 1995. Out of the gate, I will mention that a few pages have parts cute out. If anyone has this issue and wants to scan those pages for me, send me a private message. The pages that are needed are: Pages 126, 126, 127, 128, 131, and 132. Here are two scans of the cover: One using the default scanner profile, and the other using some sRBG profile (both with saturation upped 20% post scan). Do let me know which looks better to you between the two before I start. #1 - Default Profile: #2 - sRGB Profile:

  39. I'm going to resize them down to 1600. I'm keeping the original (full size) PNG's on a back-up HD. I'm sure they'll be needed again sometime in the future as monitor resolutions increase. Actually it's not dust - these were quick and dirty test crops I did (the originals are still uncropped) and that page looks like it has a very small piece missing at the top left corner. Most likely this was done at the printers since I only opened this thing a couple of times before. I'm still figuring out a work flow in Photoshop to make sure the pages are all cropped uniformly but retain as much of the pages as possible. I'm looking for the absolute best quality I can get as I'm only going to be doing it once so any suggestions are definitely welcome. I really love my Epson 4490 - it's a great scanner for the price.

  46. My most difficult scan to this day. Hopefully the next one will a bit easier. Even though it was a hard project, I enjoyed working on it simply because almost every page has a truely classic game on it. Anyway, I'm very happy how it turned out in the end, so I hope you all will be pleased with it as well. Enjoy! Mean Machines 001 - oct 1990 (UK)
