That would be the Sega Saturn Magazine special they did in last years Christmas issue. The beautiful NiGHTS cover with the sparkly snow and glisters glued to it. Damo over at Meanmachinesmag asked me if I could provide him with specific scans from the entire collection of OSSM for the feature he was writing, and I ended up scanning about 700 pages or so between the 37 issues.

Indeed. Just took a look at the sites and I'm so glad they are getting a warm reception. Several years ago it was pretty easy to find great Saturn sites on the web, but most of the big names have all gone 404. So it's nice to see a way to get more people to enjoy these great magazines as most of them simply don't know about the project until a community member like NickSCFC puts the word out there. Many thanks for that! After all, the reason we do this job is so that many people would be able to relive the memories.

Oh, Hi there. I'm just about to leave for work, so i don't have much time. But yes, if you upload the mag to rapidshare I'll have a look at it. if everything is okay (thank you page included etc), I'll put it on the download manager and send you a pm with all the data you'll need to upload any future mags to the system yourself.

I have started using new editing techniques which work much better on either black or white pages, this way black pages will actually be black and not grey and white ones won't have any of the nasty yellowing that sometimes can be found around the edges of certain pages. I will also take greater care about finding and removing dust particles as well as other spots and stuff that shouldn't be on there. And finally thanks to the new "Vibrance" tool in CS4 and the correct settings at which this will be used, the colours and overall quality of the magazines will be as close tot the original as I can possibly make them. You might have noticed that the saturation process of before did quite a good job of making the pages look vibrant, but it only seemed to target the warm colour spectrum. It also for some reason seemed to eat away a bit of the detail in certain areas as well as give the whole page a bit of an overexposed feel. This is all gone now. Now with the combination of a lower saturation level (8 instead of 20) along with a 50% Vibrance boost, the full spectrum finally gets the attention it deserves. And I must say they look breathtaking. I can in all honesty say that I believe that I can't make them look any better than they are turning out right now. The only thing I can think of is that perhaps in 5-10 years I could upload the scans without having to resize them as I'm keeping the original PSD files as well. But at thins point in time it's all but practical to upload magazines which are between 1.5 and 3 Gig large. You will be able to tell them apart from the new thank you page at the end of the magazine At the bottom right of which page I will add a date in grey. That way you can check which version you have. The ones without a date are the old ones, and in the unlikely event that I made a mistake with one of the upcoming issues it will also be easier to know if you should update a magazine or not. I'll put the release date of each issue in first post of my Work in progress thread as well. MAXIMUM 001 - 1995 (UK) Wiki page here. Download page here. Rapidshare link

I'm always looking for ways to improve the scans and make them look as close as possible to the original magazines. A job which isn't always so easy due to the fact that looking at a paper magazine and looking at the same thing on screen are very different. But with the new additions of Photoshop CS4 we have something that will help up get a step closer once again. You might have seen before that a simple thing like upping the saturation for a scan by about 20 in CS3 can make a page much more vibrant. The only downside it has is that it seems to focus on the red side of the color spectrum. But considering it was that or nothing, the improvement was quite big. Well now we have a new tool at our disposal: Under Image->Adjustments we now have Vibrance as well. Which does exactly what we were trying to accomplish with the saturation. I have been playing around with various settings and after a couple hours of experimenting I have found that a Vibrance setting of 50 and Saturation setting of 8 under the same vibrance option seems to give the best results compared to the original magazine. As a demonstration you can download this CBZ file The first one is with a saturation of 20 and the second version is with a vibrance of 50 and saturation of 8. Here you can see that while the second page is not over saturated like the first one is, it is extremely vibrant, even the blues and greens which would normally stay very pale in comparison.

That is one of the newer magazines that are in my upload folder. I've just started uploading the file to rapidshare, it should be ready to download in 15 minutes.

Took a quick look at Indesign and it does look great, but for me personally it would mean that I would have to spend a pretty big amount of time learning the ins and outs of the program. So it would again take time away from my scanning and such. I'm still learning my way around Photoshop and I've been using that for over 6 months now. I would love to have you on board. I will probably specialize in obscure Japanese only games for just about every system. GBA, PC-Engine, MegaDrive, Snes, Saturn, DreamCast,PSone etc etc. since that's my area of expertise. The thing is that for getting screen grabs we'll have to use emulators, which I don't see any problem with for this purpose. (Not really keen on them otherwise ) The only problem would be with getting screens for Saturn and DreamCast games as I don't think the emulation for these systems is all that. But it might have changed over the years. I really don't know. So if anyone has a good quality capture card, it could certainly help us out getting great screens for games on those systems. That would be Photoshop. Didn't even know CS4 was out. But I do now.

No problem. The reason why they are being put up on Rapidshare is because we have a premium account there, so the magazines don't get deleted after a couple of months. We would put them up on other download services as well, but then we would have to pay for a premium membership on there as well. And also upload every single mag multiple times which would be quite a bit of work seeing as how many gigabytes are already online.
-
Hello and welcome to the site. I don't see the point really. It it would have been so that only people who contribute would be able to download magazines, then I would see where you're coming from. But we put up all the magazines on rapidshare as well so that every single visitor will be able to download whatever they want. It is true that at this moment not every last magazine is on rapidshare, but this is something that we are working on as we speak. We only have a certain amount of bandwidth every month, so we can't always directly upload the latest magazines the moment they are put up on the site itself.

Sorry to hear that. If the project goes through your help will be very welcome. I haven't written any new reviews yet, and I normally do a spellcheck on them. But even though the spelling might be fine the grammar might need a bit of a tune up here and there. As for the editing program, I'm using CS3 which seems to be giving me all the tools I need to do this. I've already created a template for the pages so it's a bit easier to get them looking uniform. The only problem is that it might be a bit confusing as every single item on the page above is on a separate layer.

Mine is quite a long story, so I'm gonna keep it as brief as possible. It started out as Nightopian during the DreamCast browser days and stayed that way for several years. For those that don't know, a nightopian is an inhabitant of NiGHTS into Dreams, one of my favourite games ever. But after a traumatic experience which nearly caused me to end my life (sorry bout that), I changed it into mepian, which is a nightopian that's been crossed with a nightmaren. Standing for the dark things that were going on in my life and put me into a deep depression. After deciding that I wasn't going to let certain people screw up the rest of my life I started getting better and thus after a while changed it into mepy, which became meppy and then finally into meppi as it sounds like a happy mepian

This idea has been brewing for quite a while now and as I was pondering how feasible this would be. Not only in the amount of work that would have to be put into the writing and editing, but also if I have the know how to actually put something like this together which is worthwhile or not. As some might know, I used to work on a small site which tried to specialize in bringing obscure Japanese console games out of their obscurity. It's success is up for debate. So it's been a while since I last wrote a review, and I'm feeling the itch to get back to work. But this time with a twist. Instead of creating a couple of web pages which will no doubt go offline sooner or later, as Philly knows, I'm playing with the idea of creating something a bit more durable. A Retromags homemade magazine which would deal with surprise, surprise: retro games. As for how we would go to work on this and when an CBZ issue would be released or even how many pages it should be etc are still a mystery at this point. That is why I am posting this right here. To see if there would indeed be any interest in this new project. And perhaps to find people who would be willing to participate. I have just finished a test page, which doesn't exactly deal with an obscure game, but it's one that's very close to my gamer's heart nonetheless. Radiant Silvergun.

What the.... Aren't they supposed to slowly build up the workout over time instead of jumping in and seeing if you'll survive or not?

Quickly tested it out with Portal by shutting down my AirPort and when you start Steam without an internet connection present you can opt for an offline mode where you can play all your games without needing to be logged in. So short answer yes.

Half-Life, Valve's first game, was released 10 years ago today, and to celebrate, the original game can now be bought on Steam for $0.98. http://store.steampowered.com/app/70/

Wow that's crazy! Too bad those levels aren't actually of much use. I've found some great things that people built on Youtube, but as far as actual great multiplayer ideas, I haven't seen anything yet.
-
Ah, I thought you would be asking if it's worth picking up. I have bought it myself 2 weeks ago for €21 on blahdvd.com and I have been addicted, especially to the multiplayer mode. After playing this with my best friend for a whole afternoon he immediately ordered it himself as well. Haven't made any custom multiplayer levels myself as I still have quite a few items to unlock. But I have tested out the create mode and the possibilities are nearly endless. If you'd like to exchange multiplayer maps when I get around to making them my friend code is 1456-3845-0056-0662
