I totally missed this post over in this section. Just noticed your name on the online window... :blushing: Abyway, if you're still looking for a great scanner at a decent price I'd go for the Canon CanoScan LiDE 70. You should be able to find one for €70-80. I've been using one myself for the last couple of months and I'm loving it. Great colour depth, scans white backgrounds much cleaner than my old canoscan 50 and is a bit faster to boot. I've even been thinking of getting a spare one in case this one breaks down and I can't find the model anymore.

Thanks guys. Yeah, I pinned the topic so it wouldn't get pushed back.

I know I've seen it before, certainly once. SO I'm thinking it could be in one of the newer CVG or perhaps in GameMasters. But since both magazines were complete shit around 2002 I don't have many issues. And I'm not even sure where I put them. :blushing:

Does anyone know in which magazines this ad appeared? It should be around February 2002 as that's when the game was released in Europe. I can only find this low quality scan online:

Collecting Nintendo Video Game Franchises..
meppi replied to Phillyman's topic in Retro Video Gaming!
Well, I finally finished Zelda Twilight Princess a couple weeks back. It was kind of bittersweet. Love the game to bits, but I'm sad it's over. Knowing that it might be a couple years before we see another console Zelda... Oh well, perhaps now is the perfect time to pick Phantom Hourglass back up. Played it for an hour or 2 and it seems incredible. For some reason the game gives me a the original Legend Of Zelda feeling from the very first NES game. Strange I know. Seems like they chucked out everything that could possible clutter up the game and went back to basics, before starting to rebuild everything to the DS's strength. -
I do have a couple of issues of gamefan but only 3, perhaps 4. Love what I saw about the magazine though, so I'll be looking for more in the coming months. There aren't any Gamefan issues scanned as of yet, but as the site slowly grows, someone is bound to start scanning issues. We do have a bunch of various other magazines in the download section, but you'll have to get 5 posts in before you're able to access that section. (It's a regulation to keep most leechers and undesirable people away)

Looking at the poll I see we have a couple of trolls here. And then people wonder why there are certain restrictions up to keep that kind away from the releases. :getlost:

Wow, I somehow missed that last post. That certainly does explain th whole situation. It does still leave us with the dilemma though. What numbering do we use? If it was simply one person working on this magazine it wouldn't be so urgent, but since releases are coming pretty quick for these magazines and since Phillyman, clerk37 and kbf_private_joker are all working on these, we'd better come up with a universal numbering guide that all can use. Or soon it will be such a mess that it would take weeks to clean up the whole section. Seeing as how they count SWATPro as regular issues, but they weren't released consecutively, it might be best to go with the list I made a couple of posts up, and treat the SWATPro issues as a seperate publication, a bit like the Buyers guides etc. Let me know what everyone thinks, because if we're gonna do this, every issue starting with Issue 84 (labeled 94) July 1996, will have to be renamed (pages and all), the release document adjusted and renamed, and then be re-uploaded. I'm willing to take this job on, no problem. But I just have to be sure everyone is on the same page on this one. This makes me think that perhaps we might need a specific topic where the naming conventions are laid out even before the magazines are released. Like the list I did above. That way every issue released would have a standard naming convention, at least for that particular magazine. As you can see all my magazines are done like this: MAXIMUM The Video Game Magazine Issue 1 - 1995 (UK) MAXIMUM The Video Game Magazine Issue 2 - 1995 (UK) MAXIMUM The Video Game Magazine Issue 3 - 1996 (UK) (note that there weren't any months given for the magazine releases, and that it didn't come out on a consistent monthly basis, thus only the year is mentioned) Official Sega Saturn Magazine 001 - nov 1995 (UK) Official Sega Saturn Magazine 002 - dec 1995 (UK) Official Sega Saturn Magazine 003 - jan 1996 (UK) Club Nintendo Vol.2 Issue 4 - 1990 (UK) Club Nintendo Vol.3 Issue 5 - 1991 (UK) Club Nintendo Vol.4 Issue 1 - 1992 (UK) (bi-monthly magazine without months being mentioned again, as well as an unconventional numbering sequence) etc. I know it used to be easy to use underscores between words, because when uploading something with regular spaces, the upload program/site would automatically add underscores, and even change characters. But since we have to rar or zip our cbrs before uploading them, we don't have this problem. So I prefer something like this. Again, it's perhaps a good thing that we have a discussion about this early one, if only to keep everything a bit organized. So like I said, if we could agree on how certain magazines should be named like this, we could create complete lists for them in a topic (perhaps in the work in progress section). That way, no matter who would start a magazine, he or she could simply go to the list, copy&paste the correct name for the cbr and release it as part of the whole set, which would then look lots nicer as well as greatly organized.
-
Well, actually you can. Simply open a cbr, then right-click on it and choose page movement control. From there you can go to thumbnails or use the slider to go to a specific page. I wish the thumbnail option would work faster though, or at least be able to save them once you've loaded them before. I also use a couple of settings which I like, such as : -Image sizing options: Fit Width (C+W) Rotate Scroll Functions -Color Balance: Everything off. (otherwise everything looks washed out) -Yellow Reduction: set to off -Program settings: Forward 2 pages in 2 page mode backwards 2 pages in 2 page mode Page buffer size: 8 (improves loading new pages) You can also push F1 when you have CDisplay open to view a help page which explains all the settings. Oh, and when I have to use PDFs, I use Foxit reader (http://www.foxitsoftware.com/), which works much faster on my system, as I also have lots of trouble with Adobe Reader.

I finally got a Jaguar earlier this year, simply for Tempest 2000. Personally I think it's worth the money just for that game. (I don't really want any others) I did have to buy a RGB cable though, since the original cables that came with it made everything look so washed out and blurry.

That's why I'm happy that I started cataloging everything videogame related I bought, including the place where I bought it, price and date. It would be an impossible to even try and start retracing everything right now. I've got an Atari 2600 lying around here somewhere wit 5 or so games. Got it as a gift from a friend many years ago. But I'm not collecting for it. Wouldn't mind coming across a copy of Amidar though. For the rest, I've started replacing my pal collection of games with Japanese versions, especially up till the Dreamcast. Since we always got 50Hz conversion problems, and lots of games that didn't came out here. 80-90% of my time is spent playing retro games, so thats where most of my purchasing is done. Been on a real Dreamcast spree lately. Strange how I've been rediscovering the system by buying Japanese games, even though I own the pal versions ever since the system was released over here. Being an arcade gamer has put me in the position where I'm hardly interested in the actual "next gen systems", so I only own a Wii and that won't change any time soon. WipEout might push me into having to get a PS3 eventually though, if it lives up to the legacy that is...

I was getting a bit nervous as the parcel was shipped 3 weeks ago and hadn't arrived yet. But today I got a big bundle of joy in the mail. All the missing issues of both Sega Saturn magazine and MAXIMUM, as well as a couple of doubles for SSM issues which were in dire condition. :santa:
-
I'd say the overall quality and ease of use. Since CBR files are simply image folders which are zipped or rarred and renamed to .cbr it's easy to extract the files and get to the jpegs. A lot of the time there are problems with compression when jpegs are turned into a PDF, which doesn't happen in a CBR. I could write a whole page of examples why I prefer CBR over PDF, but to be honest, I'm pretty lazy. I just think of it as a much cleaner format.
-
Will, do! Lots more stuff coming up. full SSM and Maximum sets, CVG from the Saturn years, not to mention Mean Machines Sega thanks to Zastai, and probably when those are all finished the unofficial UK Dreamcast magazine and the Official UK one as well.

To be honest, it wasn't a very deliberate decision. I had the rapidshare account since there are loads of other sites that use the service as a main file sharing tool over megaupload or similar sites. So I simply started using it to upload magazines as well, besides just downloading other stuff. I could have gotten a megaupload account as well, but that would only cost me more money and since I would barely use it to download anything, it would be a bit of a waste for me personally. Besides the few inconveniences I'm quite pleased with rapidshare myself. Oh, and when using a free account the files will get deleted in time, so that's also a big plus as my bandwidth is pretty limited, thus I can't keep re-uploading magazines.
-
Yeah, I noticed that as well. I have no problems with it because I'm used to it now, but in the beginning it looked a bit chaotic. There are several things that need to be worked out still, and we wouldn't want to loose anything important in this section before it all has been moved to the main download section. But I'm sure once things get a bit less hectic for Phillyman that we'll get everything sorted out.
-
As some of you might have noticed, when uploading a file to rapidshare you are limited to 100MB. So when you have a magazine thats say 120MB, you'll have to split the file up into 2 parts. Now the problem with rapidshare lies with the fact that there's a timed download limit between every file, depending on it's size. At least if you don't have a rapidhare premium membership. So up until now, when you wanted to download a magazine that had 2 parts you would have to wait up till 3 hours to download the second part so that you could unpack the CBR. Well, I've just noticed that I seem to have a limited amount of free upload space on my account, so from this point one, whenever I'll have to upload a magazine in 2 parts, I'll make the smallest part a "direct download", which should make it downloadable even if you are already at your hourly limit. I'm sure this will make downloading these releases much more convenient. I can't say how long it will take to reach the limit, at which point the files will automatically return to being regular rapidshare files, but it's a good solution as long as it lasts.
-
Ah, great work! I'm actually uploading a bunch of magazines to Rapidshare myself. Since I have a premium membership, they won't expire. But the more download options the better, especially since most of these services limit the amount you can download in an hour. I believe we're going to merge both download sections into one, so I'll include these links in the other section as well.

Nice to see someone who writes for Retro Gamer. Love the mag! This months issue is a terrific one with the big making of NiGHTS special and the Battle Garegga article. Not to forget the great feature about the Official Sega Saturn magazine this month. (wink, wink  ) The only thing I would change about the magazine is it's large focus on the computer side of things so that it would cover much more console gaming. As well as having a bigger section on Japanese only retro games. But that just my personal preferences getting in the way. I fully realize that fans of classic computer games would riot in the streets and make the rivers in England run red with blood if I'd get me way. :fear:
-
I'd love to see them as well. The older the better for me when I can't read the articles themselves. It's always great to see how certain games were presented in different parts of the world.

Oh my! NiGHTS. My all-time favourite game. Great surprise to see those magazines pop up. I've just won this one: Should have already had this a couple of months back, but the magazine never arrived. :unhappy: But since this one is being shipped from the UK instead of Australia, it shouldn't get lost in the mail this time. It's one of the few CVG issues from the Paul Davies era that I was still missing, so I'm very glad to have found it. The only others that I'm missing as of now are 168-179

Most certainly a completely different storm front on these shores, but it's going to be a rough day tomorrow with winds up to 110kph. I'll stay inside methinks. :ermm:
