  1. Not sure if this one is in the arcade already, but I love castle smasher: http://www.donutgames.com/play/castle_smasher/
  2. Oh and the Wii is doing just as great. Not to mention that they just set a new weekly sales record in the UK as well with the DS. Selling 191,000 units in 7 days time. Looks like Nintendo was able to completely turn their fortunes around. Too bad Sega couldn't do this as well and return with their own hardware. Things just haven't been the same for them since the DC died.
  3. I knew things were starting to get crazy, but this is just wow. I have no words....
  4. Nice to see them actually give props to retromags, where others would have simply used the scans and kept quite. Great video as well. Now I finally see that I was so wrong thinking the things I did about Kevin.
  5. Official Sega Saturn Magazine 011 - sep 1996 (UK) Download here and extract the rar file to get to the CBR.
  6. Absolutely stonking piece of work! Totally fantastic. I know how much work you've put into the wiki. The hours rush by without noticing when doing something like that. Wish I could help you with those, but I don't have a single one of those magazine. Can't wait for these magazines to be scanned as I missed a huge part of this time period as far as Sega is concerned. :blushing:
  7. I didn't see that reply, Thor... I'll scan it in between the other magazines. Some of you will be very happy to hear that I just won all the missing issues from both the Official Sega Saturn Magazine as well as Maximum. Zastai has been so kind to donate another huge box, this time it's the first 27 issues of Mean Machines Sega, another legendary British magazine. Big thanks for everything! They haven't arrived yet, but I'm sure they'll show up soon.
  8. Well, I myself don't really understand this. From where I stand there are already too many great games on there to fit on my Wii without an SD card. Not going to start up a list or anything, but every week there seems to be at least 1 worthwhile game at the least. Except for last week where we got nothing but Double Dribble in Europe. :dizzy: But looking at the catalogue so far, there are so many great games on pretty much every system already online, and the classics just keep coming. Now with even NeoGeo games and PC-Engine CD games as well! It's normal that Nintendo is spreading out the releases like this though. Think about it. If they would simply dump every single Nintendo game online it would be so overwhelming, and since we wouldn't be getting new releases every week, the surprise and anticipation would be lost, which would no doubt lead to lesser interest and therefor sales as well.
  9. Happy Thanksgiving guys! Even though the family festivities over here will have to wait till Christmas.
  10. hehe you should see my mailman's face when I go on a shopping spree. I bought a whole bunch of Japanese horror and yakuza DVDs a while back from play.com. Must have been 25 movies in a span of 5 days or so. On top of that I bought several bundles of RetroGamer back issues (not for scanning, but because I love the mag). And I also got my monthly load of Japanese retro games that comes in a very nice bog, heavy box. Then a couple of DS and Wii games from England to top it all off, and combined with the regular mail and subscriptions I would actually be surprised if they hadn't blacklisted me by now.
  11. Just came across something very weird today. After 2 weeks of not being able to scan, I picked up where I left off. Scanned in the first 20 pages of MAXIMUM 6 and then went to edit them. The first couple of pages seemed quite ok, but there was something a bit off. Something that became more appearant with every new dark colored page. In the middle of each page there was a whole band of horizontal rainbow colored lines. First I thought it would probably be the glass itself that had a smudge or something, or perhaps even the way this particular magazine was printed. But after checking everything out it turned out to be anything but this. What I did notice was that when I plugged in the scanner, I used another USB port than the one I normally use. Seemed to make the scanning go a bit quicker as well. When I plugged it in, I noticed the new hardware tab popping up, but didn't think much of it as I had installed the CD that came with the printer when I first bought it. Well, it tuns out that Windows has installed it's own drivers for use with my scanner on this USB port, cause when I plug it back into the regular one, the rainbow effect disappears... I'm glad I don't have to go buy another printer again, as it would take a while before I would be able to do so. I noticed a couple of people mentioning in the past that their scanner put vertical lines on their scans, so who knows, you might also be using the windows drivers when simply plugging in your scanner... Lesson learned, always use and install the software that comes with the device and install it like it says in the manual. :blushing: Anyway, hopefully this incident can help someone who comes across a similar situation.
  12. I'm up to 42 stars now. Haven't seen Sweet Sweet Galaxy but I'm looking forward to it. I'm in love with this game. it's very quickly becoming one of my all time favorites. Sadly this feeling doesn't come very often. You know the one I'm talking about. You start up a game and you instantly know you're gonna love playing it even 5-10 years from now. Well at least it doesn't happen to me much, certainly not in the last couple of years. Perhaps that's why I'm so much into all kinds of retro gaming. I can remember having those exact same feelings with games like Mario Bros 3, Mario World, Mario 64, Radiant Silvergun the same week it came out in Japan, NiGHTS and Panzer Dragoon Saga. I'm sure there are a couple more, but you get the idea. This is a game that keeps me playing and keeps me hoping that someone will bring out more stuff like this. If it weren't for games like this one, I would probably have left this hobby when the DC died... I just love the way you think, gosh, I loved that Galaxy. But I would have wanted a star or 2 more in that one. And then while strolling through a rerun of the level, just for the fun of being there and playing around with everything, you come across something that makes you suspicious. Try out whatever you can think of, and before you know it you've opened up a secret path in that galaxy which leads to another complete level. Also for some reason, I just love dying in this game. I was playing the level with all the thwomp blocks that is built around a waterstream trapped between 2 black holes. The one in the cave. I had little trouble with it the first time, but now there was a speedy comet in orbit so it was a tad more difficult. I must have died at least 15 times in a couple of minutes, and I was sitting there with this sick grin on my face loving every second of it. Where I normally would be getting frustrated in another game, this one has the exact opposite effect on me. When you die, you know that it's not the game's fault. Your skills are either rusty or your reflexes are too slow, but it certainly isn't due to faulty design choices. I'm literally in gaming heaven this week.
  13. Yeah, loved that part. Especially the level that precedes him. So nostalgic. I'm so happy the team wasn't afraid to put some put 2D gameplay in there along with the regular 3D platforming. Well, if you can call anything in this game regular. Had the same thought as well, afraid that the game will be over when I'm not ready for it to be over. Then again, reading that 2nd spoiler made me smile. I won't have any trouble playing it all over again from the start then. *edit* I think I'm up to 32 now.
  14. Getting a bit further into the game. I'm up to 22 starts right now, but I'm not going for a speed run. Instead I'm savoring every second of this game. I absolutely love it to pieces. Last time I felt this way when playing a game was when I first picked up NiGHTS 10 years ago. Sure, nothing is supposed to ever be perfect, but this for me is as close at it'll ever get. For those who haven't played the teams prior game, be sure to pick up Donkey Kong Jungle Beats with a pair of bongo's. It's so underrated that it almost makes me want to cry. Can't wait to see with what they will come up next.
  15. I just got it today. The thing is, I won't be rating it before I have played it for a decent amount of time, but seeing how I totally and completely adored Donkey Kong Jungle Beat this simply can't go wrong. Especially with all the praise this game is getting all over the net, without a bunch of whiners going on and on about minuscule things they didn't like. So this is going to be special indeed. Only got 2 stars this afternoon before I had to take a nap again. (Just had surgery this Monday) Loved it for the small amount I've played. The thing is that I stared seeing the game in front of my eyes when I closed them, just like I used to have when playing Tetris for much too long. Like I said, I just played for a good hour or, so and I'm dying to get back to the game. Which is exactly what I'm going to do right now.
  16. Wow, they are still up to their old tricks? Somehow trying to do some viral marketing for Ratchet & Clank as well as the PS3 (and failing miserably I might add), while badmouthing the game that should hands down win GOTY? Didn't the get embarrassed a couple years back when people found out that Sony had set up some kind of movie review division, which was supposed to look like your average unbiased critics office, but turned out to be Sony execs writing reviews that clearly favored Sony pictures releases, while badmouthing others? It's the shit like this that they pull on a constant basis that made me start my Sony boycott a year and a half back. Even though 5 times more games on both the PSone and PS2 than my Nintendo Systems of the time. They somehow make Microsoft seem like angels...Bravo once again Sony, bravo...
  17. Seeing the original now, I have to say that it indeed looks better with the contrast and brightness adjusted. It's weird since my scanner puts them out like that with all the enhance options turned off even. I use a CanonLide70 btw. You can always make a macro that adjusts the contrast and brightness to you liking and also resizes them to a with of 1280 in the push of a button. Took me a while to find it in my program, but I guess most would have such an option.
  18. AH Diff'rent Strokes? Wow, that takes me back to my childhood.
  19. Now this is the kind of reviews that I like. Too bad I don't speak Italian.
  20. Looks great as far as I can see. Notice that you used the other tutorial on the forum. Next time you edit your scans I wouldn't change the resolution to 150dpi, it doesn't reduce the size by much at all, and when you have full colored paged with a single color and just text, there seem to be more artifacts than in 300dpi. How many pages is the magazine? Because 200MB is indeed a bit large. My magazine scans are around 60MB for 100 pages, sometimes a bit larger or smaller. Depends on how the pages are made up. I upped the quality of my scans quite a bit after I got a new scanner and my JPGs are between 500-900kb now. Could be since you save them at 10, as I save them at 9 in Photostudio, but it depends a bit from program to program. Also, if your colors in your scans turn out to be nice and bright by themselves, I wouldn't mess around with the contrast and brightness. But then again, this depends on the kind of scanner you're using. My former one had pretty muddy colors, yet my new one is nice and bright by itself.
  21. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z5ZgGIfdr-g What I would give to see a full Megaman game like this being made today. I really miss the simpler Megaman games. The new ones are great, but just not the same.
  22. Great post! Now these might not be NES games, but take a look at my site for some obscure gems: http://users.telenet.be/twin-dreams/ The largest amount of reviews are in the Playstation area, since there were so many unheard of retro-style games released in Japan back in the day. But the Nintendo section does have 2 great Snes games as well.
  23. Great to have you on the team. A couple of things to get you started might help you out in knowing what we use for scanning the magazines. First, you'd want to scan everything in 300dpi. Make sure you get the pages as straight as possible when you scan them, because if you have to rotate them afterwards, you'll lose a bit of detail. When you have a page scanned in, first crop it so that you only have the actual page without any white borders. When this is done, resize the page to a width of 1280, and if possible clean them up where necessary. Scratches, dust, white spots, dog ears, etc. But then again, if this is a bit too much work, you can always do a raw scan and leave the editing to someone else once we get a couple of dedicated editors on board. If you have any questions, fire away.
  24. So very true. I love the little white system. Just an hour ago I was playing KOF 99 Dream Match on it. I'm planning on buying a whole bunch of Japanese games for it coming Christmas as well. I have nearly all issues of the unofficial DreamCast Magazine from the UK, and I'm looking for my missing Official UK issues. But both of these magazines are larger than regular magazines, so I'm holding of on scanning them for after I'm done with OSSM and CVG. After that I'll certainly move on to those.
