  1. RPGs indeed have awesome music. My list is a little tricky since I'm considering both original and licensed game soundtracks. Keep in mind that this list may fluctuate from time to time depending on my mood and nostalgia factor. Wow, Top 20 Game Soundtracks? Alright, here we go: 1. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (N64) 2. Bully (PS2) 3. Chrono Trigger (SNES) 4. Guitar Hero II (PS2) 5. Plok (SNES) 6. Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest (SNES) 7. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 (PS1) 8. Crash Bandicoot (PS1) 9. Final Fantasy VII (PS1) 10. The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker (GC) 11. Donkey Kong Country (SNES) 12. Fallout 3 (X360) 13. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (PS2) 14. Thrasher: Skate and Destroy (PS1) 15. Ape Escape (PS1) 16. F-Zero (SNES) 17. Gran Turismo 2 (PS1) 18. Doom (PC) 19. Wipeout XL (PS1) 20. Cheetahmen II (NES) Honorable mentions: - BioShock 2 (X360) - Earthbound (SNES) - Final Fantasy VIII (PS1) - Grandia (PS1) - Halo: Combat Evolved (XBOX) - Killer Instinct (SNES) - Mega Man 8: Anniversary Collector's Edition (PS1) - PaRappa the Rapper (PS1) - Red Dead Redemption (X360) - Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (GEN) - Spyro the Dragon (PS1) - Super Castlevania IV (SNES) - Super Mario 64 (N64) - Tony Hawk's Underground (PS2)
  2. Huh, that's interesting. The GameStop employee who told me they weren't must not be telling me the truth, or just misinformed (no pun intended). Yeah, digital issues aren't the same to me. There's a certain thrill I get by physically turning the next page to know more about a game that won't be out for another one or two years or even just looking at the awesome cover art for Game Informer magazines. I love that stuff.
  3. It's a tie between my PlayStation 1 and PlayStation 2 as far as the most games I have for a single console. I can't give an exact amount of games, but I'd guess and say somewhere between 100-150 games on PS1 anyway. Most of the games I got used and for a pretty good price (between $0.01 - $9.99). I don't count all of my demo discs I've collected also. I'm sure I have just as many demo discs as well!
  4. This is one of those lists that deserves a lot of thinking and re-ordering, but for the sake of time and sanity, I've condensed it down to these games: 1. Fallout 3: Game of the Year Edition (X360) 2. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (N64) 3. BioShock (X360) 4. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (PS2) 5. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (X360) Yeah, I know most of these games are current-generation games, but honestly there are a lot of incredible games that came out over the past decade.
  5. I picked up Crash Bandicoot, Wild 9 and Wu-Tang: Shaolin Style at an independent little game shop. I lost my original Crash Bandicoot game and case, so I wanted it again. I remember playing a lot of Wild 9 back in the day, but in retrospect, it's not as great as I remember. I don't know what it is. As far as Wu-Tang is concerned, it was more of an ironic purchase than anything else, you know, like when you intentionally buy a bad movie because it's funny in a dumb way or whatnot. Yeah, that game's not so great, but I dig the three exclusive tracks. Some of the "fatalities" are hilarious.
  6. I got a bundle of games a couple of weeks ago on Xbox 360: 1. Dragon Age: Origins - Ultimate Edition - $20 - Ashamed to admit I haven't started on it. I keep hearing good things. 2. Dragon Age II - $5 - Got a fantastic deal on this. Even though word is that it's not as good as DA:O, you can't beat a 10-30+ hour game for $5. 3. Final Fantasy XIII - $20 - Have not yet played this one, but after hearing how divisive it is from fellow FF fans, I'm very curious. 4. Forza Motorsport 3: Ultimate Collection - $20 - Better graphics, more cars, fun Season mode - what more could you ask for? 5. Skate 3 - $20 - I was (and still am) more of a Tony Hawk guy, but this game in particular made me a Skate believer. Just an awesome game. 6. Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection - $20 - A generous compilation of most of the hit Genesis games with some neat unlockable extras. The next games I plan to purchase in the near future: - Batman: Arkham City - Game of the Year Edition - I'm Batman. Or at least I pretend to be Batman. - Max Payne 3 - I'm a bit of a Rockstar fan boy, so I absolutely need to play this. - The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - Dawnguard DLC - It's killing me that I don't currently have the MSP for it, but I'll get there. Someday. - Tony Hawk's Pro Skater HD - Super excited about this and 1200 MSP seems reasonable.
  7. It feels really early for Nintendo to announce a second version of the 3DS, but hey, I'm no businessman. Regardless, I'll probably get one eventually, maybe during a Black Friday deal or something. Then again, as Nintendo's habit of cranking out different versions of their portable consoles continue, the third rendition might be even better, so I dunno... I'm also disappointed by the lack of a second analog stick. Not that I would want to use it for shooters or anything, but mainly for in-game camera support. I'm not a fan of using the L and R buttons or even worse using the stylus to swipe across the bottom screen to do so. It's awkward. Longer battery life is always a good thing, but no AC adapter included? What? Anyway, I'll keep a close eye on it.
  8. That's quite ambitious of an asking price! I understand it is very rare and in excellent condition, but surely the seller can think of something more realistic. Perhaps $100-150?
  9. I have a subscription to Game Informer and @Gamer Magazine. I used to have physical copies of Game Informer, but now since everything is switching to digital it seems like, they only allow you to download issues from their website. I can't get it to work properly even though I paid for it and I'd much rather have the physical versions, but oh well. The @Gamer Magazine is treated more as a bonus than its own thing. It's a Best Buy-exclusive magazine from Future Publishing that is actually pretty decent even though it's mainly advertised to give you coupons, but that's not too much of a bad thing, IMO. Both magazines were included in a membership at GameStop and Best Buy, so even though I don't necessarily love the content (or can't even read the damn thing in the case of GI), I still get little goodies out of it.
  10. I saw the trailer for Wreck-It Ralph before Brave not too long ago and I was immediately sold. Seeing all of the video game villains together and banter is both hilarious and nostalgic for me, but aside from the cameos, I love the premise and visually it looks just as good as any Pixar movie. It blows my mind that Kano, a character from the ultra-violent Mortal Kombat franchise, is in a Disney movie. That's crazy! Can't wait to see it.
  11. I was really impressed with the E3 footage from Beyond: Two Souls. Knowing the developer's past experience with Indigo Prophecy and Heavy Rain, I know there's gotta be a lot of surprises and story twists to keep the game interesting. And like you mentioned, I'm very curious about the moral choices and how the characters will evolve towards the end. Ellen Page is a perfect casting choice for the main character. She emotes very well and, of course, the graphics look amazing. I just hope the bulk of the gameplay doesn't rely so much on quick time events. Beyond: Two Souls and The Last of Us are the games that definitely warrant a PS3 purchase from me. I can't wait for them to drop!
  12. 1. Super Mario Bros. 3 2. The Legend of Zelda 3. Tetris 4. Contra 5. Super Mario Bros. 6. Mega Man 2 7. Tecmo Super Bowl 8. Metroid 9. Duck Hunt 10. Castlevania II: Simon's Quest Honorable mentions: - Battletoads - DuckTales - Final Fantasy - Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! - Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III: The Manhattan Project
  13. 1. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past 2. Super Mario World 3. Donkey Kong Country 4. NBA Jam: Tournament Edition 5. Street Fighter II 6. F-Zero 7. Killer Instinct 8. Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest 9. Super Mario Kart 10. Chrono Trigger Honorable mentions: - Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble! - EarthBound - Ken Griffey, Jr,'s Winning Run - Mario Paint - Super Castlevania IV
  14. I never really loved the Genesis' sound capabilities, but Michael Jackson's Moonwalker and of course the Sonic the Hedgehog games have incredible music, especially "Smooth Criminal" and "Beat It" in Moonwalker. I do like how thick the bass synths sounded. Streets of Rage 2 also has excellent music.
  15. The arcade version of Final Fight, hands down. Haggar is my go-to guy. I'm way too much of a noob to beat Battletoads!
  16. I have somewhat of an annual routine of replaying Crash Bandicoot: Warped and Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage! on PS1. Those games are so well-made and fun to this day that it never bores me one bit. Also, those were the games that I grew up with, so it shares a sentimental value to me. I also replay the first three Ratchet & Clank games for the same reasons as well. Games with a "New Game +" feature will almost always persuade me to play through the game again, like Resident Evil. Other games I often replay: Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, Mega Man Legends 2, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1-4, etc.
  17. I made a couple awful retro gaming mistakes. The worst one is my purchasing of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? 2nd Edition (PS1) for my sister. At the time, the show was very popular in the U.S. and my sister and I would watch it all the time, so a video game based on said TV show just sounded like a great idea. Little did I know that the game was an absolutely terrible excuse of a trivia game. The questions would get repeated way too often, Regis Philbin's personality wasn't used to its full potential, the load times were too long, and it just lacked enough replay value to warrant a full purchase. Speaking of which, I was dumb enough to spend $49.99 (plus tax) on it. Surely it wasn't the most expensive game I've ever bought (I spent around $100 for Electroplankton for DS - that's another story), but it was easily one of the worst video game-related purchases I've made in a while. The other retro gaming mistake isn't as bad, but still made an impact on me as I became accustomed to trading in most of my beloved (and hard-to-find) PlayStation games in favor of the newer ones at my local Electronics Boutique (now GameStop). The more memorable games included: Final Fantasy VII (yup, the original SquareSoft black label pressing), Marvel vs. Capcom: Clash of Super Heroes, Mega Man Legends 2 (relatively rare), and The Misadventures of Tron Bonne (also fairly rare). I was pretty young (and stupid) at the time, so I can see why I did it, but I still regret it to this day.
  18. The only real video game book I have is Video Games: The Ultimate Guide (2001-2002), which is more or less a compilation of reviews and brief tid-bits about various games from PlayStation, PC, Nintendo 64, Game Boy Color, Dreamcast, and the very early PlayStation 2 era. It's tricky to find it on Google due to the rather generic name, but I like it. I also have some basic game design and programming books around here somewhere. I'd love to have Arcade Mania! and The Ultimate History of Video Games.
  19. I first discovered this site when trying to look up old PlayStation demo discs actually through Google. The Official U.S. PlayStation Magazine had these in each issue, which lead me to the magazines. I was also reading through a couple issues of GamePro and it really made me miss their content, so I decided to look for the earliest issues anyone had and, lo and behold, Retromags!
  20. My favorite classic controller is definitely the original DualShock analog controller for PlayStation. It's comfortable, not obtuse, and everything is placed just right in terms of button placement. The analog sticks made everything much easier as well, especially in Gran Turismo and most 3D platformers. The Super Nintendo gamepad comes to a very close second in my book. I've been more familiar with the PlayStation, so it gets that extra edge for me.
  21. 1. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 2. MTV Music Generator 3. Crash Bandicoot: Warped 4. Mega Man Legends 2 5. Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage! 6. Grandia 7. Ape Escape 8. Gran Turismo 2 9. Driver 2 10. Tekken 3 Honorable mentions: - Jet Moto - Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver - Need for Speed: High Stakes - Syphon Filter - Wipeout XL
  22. 1. Bully - A more recent game - a college setting with the same style and humor as the first game would make me happy. 2. Mega Man Legends - I was bummed that MML3 got cancelled, but I'm still gonna keep wishing for another game, or at least an HD remake of 1 & 2. 3. Tomba! - I know there's already Ratchet and Sly Cooper, but I've always liked the Tomba! games. 4. Oddworld - The Oddworld Quintology needs to be complete! Apparently they're totally gonna make a new game, but you never know... 5. Threads of Fate - Perhaps an HD remake, Square? I'm glad the original is on PSN though. 6. Darkstalkers - Capcom needs to take a break with Street Fighter and make an updated version of Darkstalkers, a la Street Fighter IV. 7. Jumping Flash! - I'd love to see another game on the PS3 or even the Vita, though maybe not as easy. 8. Jet Moto - Even though the series went on a downward slope by Jet Moto 3 (IMO), we need more of this style of racing game today. 9. Bushido Blade - Very underrated fighting game that deserves another sequel. 10. Incredible Crisis - More of a guilty pleasure than anything. It would be fun to play the mini-games with online and co-op.
  23. Tenchu was amazing! I'd love to see a revamped version of Tenchu 1 and 2 for the current consoles. Body Harvest (N64)
  24. My first video game console was the PlayStation sometime around 1997 or so. I remember it came with the Squaresoft Final Fantasy VII demo disc, but technically the first video game console I bought was an Xbox 360. Took me months to save up money for that thing.
