Don't worry. I think that a lot of us wonder the same thing once we notice the discrepancy. Based on the fact that I asked this before and got similar answers, answers that were apparently given to others before me (and now you after), it almost feels like it's a Retromags rite of passage, lol. I've heard a few speculative explanations for the sudden Gamepro jump, and figure that the likeliest answers are that they tried to get the jump on the issue 100 landmark early (which would be really transparent, desperate and lame) or that when they started numbering the issues on the cover they'd miscounted and simply never bothered to correct the mistake (which would just be kind of dumb). Either way it makes their 100th issue celebration kind of fraudulent and awkward in retrospect.

what is your reason for downloading magazine scans?
miketheratguy replied to orthicviper's topic in Magazine Talk
All of the above. I still love and play classic games, I still have most of my old gaming magazines and worry about how long they'll keep, I love the convenience of having a decade's worth of digital classic gaming news, and I simply really, really enjoy seeing hundreds of Game Players, Nintendo Powers, EGMs, PSMs and Gamepros on the virtual shelf of my ebook reader app. -
Cast Your Votes On What To Preserve Next!
miketheratguy replied to Phillyman's topic in Retromags News
Oh okay, so the votes aren't necessarily going to "lock" what gets scanned, it's really just more of a feedback system for the team to see what people are interested in the most? That's fine then, I'd just been confused. I wasn't sure if it was going to be more of a rigid thing like "whatever gets awarded the most votes is what gets scanned" so I was sitting here wondering things like "When are the votes tallied? How frequently is this going to happen? What if a bunch of magazines are tied for votes? What if only one publication gets the majority of the votes week after week?" I guess I was just overthinking things. I do hope that the option to vote for EGMs past 1999 gets enabled though. I've got a couple dozen clicks to make. -
New Release: NextGen Issue 71 (November 2000)

"Can Zelda, Metroid and Star Was put Nintendo back on top?" No, but in a few years a gimmicky motion controller can. Funny how things unfold sometimes. -

I still don't understand. What are you actually going to do with the votes? -
Only this time I'll be the beatER, not the beatEN! Let the ultra-violence commence!!!!

Heh. I asked about this very same thing just a few weeks back.

So YOU were the guy who already voted for a bunch of the EGMs that I clicked on. -
Cast Your Votes On What To Preserve Next!
miketheratguy replied to Phillyman's topic in Retromags News
Awesome idea! A couple things though: What happens next? Will you do something like a tally at the end of each week to determine what to work on next? Also, as you'd probably expect I went pretty much straight to the year 2000 EGMs but they didn't have vote buttons to click on (because of last year's restriction on 2000 + issues, I'm guessing). -

My understanding is that the 3DS version (or at least one of them, I can't remember if there are more) is the highest-rated and most immersive overall. I believe it's called Animal Crossing: New Leaf. Of course the Gamecube original is lots of fun and probably incredibly cheap at this point. I think a 10 year-old would dig it. Hell, if I, a 28 year-old man (at the time) could get into it enough to have arguments with his girlfriend about cutting down each others' trees and stealing the town's best furniture then I would think that just about anyone can get into it.

Final Fantasy Re-Releases Ruins Pureness
miketheratguy replied to baphoon's topic in Current Generation Video Gaming!
I adored Earthbound. One of the most charming, quirky, goofy games I've ever played. Not as long as most traditional RPGs (it can probably be beaten in 30 or 40 hours, if memory serves) but easily one of the most memorable. The game's got a weird vibe that sticks with you - it's not just the eccentric stuff, it's the melancholy ruminations on family, friendship, and the sense of maturation and growing up. Earthbound is what I would describe as an "experience". But yeah, the eccentric stuff is great. This is a tune that accompanies some of the enemy encounters (enemies with names such as "Manly Fish" and "New Age Retro Hippie") and it probably says more about the atmosphere of the game than I can. -
New Releases: NextGen Issues 68, 69, and 70
miketheratguy replied to marktrade's topic in New Releases
As much as I loved the PS2, you're absolutely right: Like they did with just about everything back in those days, the video game magazines all rushed to speculate on whether the upcoming system would render the current product obsolete. I remember seeing the term "Dreamcast killer?" bandied about in much the same way that Mortal Kombat was a Street Fighter "killer" and Silent Hill was a Resident Evil "killer". It hyperbolically (and, some might argue, irresponsibly) signaled to fans that they might want to discard what they've already got because uh-oh, something SO MUCH BETTER might be just around the corner!!! Hell, I even remember EGM having a cover that raised the question "Should you buy a Dreamcast?" (though, to be fair, I don't remember when this issue was published so I can't say whether the question had anything to do with the PS2). I have a soft spot for the Dreamcast. It was the little system that could - and maybe should have. That must have been the case, yeah, because there was a time there when eeeeeeveryone who had anything at all to say about the PS2 was absolutely wetting their pants with anticipation for that game. I had no idea what the hell it was supposed to be about, even what kind of genre it was going to fall into. All I knew was that THE IMPECCABLE SQUARE!!!! was developing a game that had purty graphics of a big-busted girl with unicorn hair. That was literally it. I'm someone who DID follow PS2 news during that time and even now, to this day, all I know is that a company that had flung itself neck-deep into overrated territory was designing a game that had purty graphics of a big-busted girl with unicorn hair. The most that I remember about the game was that I decided the title "The Bouncer" referred to her boobs. Areala should know more, I saw her mention her disappointment with the game. She must have been exposed to the same blinding, worshipful pre-release hype that I was. -

I don't know what's more ridiculous - that girl's figure, or that dude's afro. I also don't know which one is more awesome. ..."The Bouncer". *Snicker*. I remember when that was a thing, and people actually cared. Ah, pre-launch hyperbole. Some of that crap is so entertaining to look back on after the fact. Speaking of which, Microsoft's Fable. Ouch. -

I can list off the last 50 best picture Oscar winners, in order, in less than a minute. Pointless? Sure. But you know what? It's also led to sex. Take that, math! -
It's possible, but I think that each breast is too clearly pronounced with too much space in the middle. They're wrapped in a pretty tight shirt and bra so I would expect them to blob together into a big beautiful mass of physical awesomeness rather than sturdily stand apart. They could very well be real but Idunno, that ex of mine who became a stripper had D-cups and hers sure didn't look like that.

I wonder if he'd dig any of the Mega Man or Animal Crossing games. I know I do.

I have no guilt about finding digital copies of games to load onto my psp, period. Still, you know me and my physical media bent. I prefer to own actual copies of a game, when possible. I'm actually surprised to hear that (A) Vandal Hearts wasn't a big seller and ( its price hasn't skyrocketed as a result. -
Would anyone be interested in hearing a retro gaming podcast?
miketheratguy replied to miketheratguy's topic in Off Topic
We've got nine episodes in the can, with the 10th one in the editing process right now. Youtube links to our first few episodes are on the first page of the thread if you'd like to give them a look! -
New Release: Electronic Gaming Monthly Issue 101 (December 1997)
miketheratguy replied to E-Day's topic in New Releases
I love you both, Sean697 and E-Day. Together you are a power team that continues to fill the pesky gaps of my favorite 90s gaming magazine. You're edging ever closer to my favorite years of the magazine. Can't wait until you hit 2000 - 2001! -

I should pick Vandal Hearts back up again. I've long wanted to get a tactical RPG to get into but I want one that's accessible, not one that's ridiculously uber-hardcore and involved (for the reasons I described above and more). I heard that Jeanne D' Arc for the psp was really good but I don't know where it falls on the byzantine scale. -
Bah. She bought those things. Nothing to applaud. But yeah, you know, I love boobs as much as the next guy. More than the next guy, actually. More than most men combined, I think. But every time I see a big stupid rack on the thumbnail image of a Youtube video - which usually have nothing to do with the video itself with titles such as "Funniest TV news fails!" or "Strange facts about XYZ" or "Here's a video that I want everyone to look at, please click on it" - it's ALWAYS accompanied by millions and millions of views. Doesn't matter that the video likely has nothing to do with boobs. Doesn't matter that anyone viewing the video on their electronic device can use that same electronic device to uncover an entire universe of the most naked, savagely pornographic material imaginable. Doesn't matter that they're being played for suckers by manipulative sociopaths who are lazily exploiting the easiest male instincts that you can exploit in a man. There might be boobs - clothed boobs in a sexually neutral environment, sure, but boobs nonetheless. So they must click. Alright, I'm done complaining. Now if you'll excuse me, I feel the need to play Super Mario 3 for some reason.

For the briefest of seconds, when I first saw your Thundarr image my mind shot back to Blackstar. Didn't their toy line feature those spark wheel things in the figure's back that would spark and light up the character's medallion when you flicked them? -
Did anyone here read GamePro back in the 90's?

On my GOD, one of these days I'm going to collect some of the more noteworthy bits of Quartermann's "gaming gossip" and compile it here to laugh at it. I vaguely remember one of his comments - can't remember the specific details - where he made some kind of bold claim about an upcoming fighting game, something like Mortal Kombat or Street Fighter. The coy swagger with which he "reported" this "news" and the benefit of seeing how blatantly, wildly, impossibly off the mark he was in hindsight made me almost embarrassed for whomever had actually written it. Again, while I don't recall specifics right this second, he said something like "Speaking of news, Q-fans, yours truly may just have uncovered a juicy tidbit about the upcoming sequel to Mortal Kombat. Word on the street is that Mortal Kombat: BURNING FURY EDITION won't feature any new characters but will allow the player to perform special desperation moves that will supercharge their characters with invincibility and extra damage for all kinds of crazy new combos and fatalities. This new game is sure to be the hottest arcade title of the year. When will it be officially unveiled? Q-Man isn't telling!" Oh le mystère!!!!! Then he made an expression like this.
