Well bun of a sitch. You know, I was trying to enjoy my fourth amendment rights today too, what a shame. Let's take a look at who benefits here: ISP's and advertisement firms. Who is paying for that benefit: Literally everybody else.

Did they already repeal the net neutrality rules? I'm gonna have to tear my senators a new asshole over this one...
-
I envy your typical internet speeds man... thanks for specifying JDownloader, I'll take a look at that, see if it isn't something I could make use of. Not to open a can of worms, but I'm curious about the Google comment? What are they up to now?
-
I agree with you absolutely here. I don't even like having a wifi setup, if I'm honest. Prefer all things to be wired and manual. Hence the Abe Simpson comment.
-
Heh, nice man... I can see why people enjoy Blackadder. Was mentioned fairly frequently by Croshaw on his non-Zero Punctuation videos.

Most like the case with that particular extension. Not something I planned on using, if I'm honest. I have (likely as you do) more than enough to keep myself entertained backed up as is. Still, a very cool option, particularly for those of us with internet speeds that wouldn't otherwise allow for streaming higher quality videos.

Reading this thread has made me realize that I'm feeling more like Abe Simpson with every passing day...

I occasionally rewatch Cowboy Bebop. No matter how many times I've seen it, it still feels fresh, the characters and their motives are always a pleasure to watch them play out. I rather enjoyed The Shield, in the same way that one enjoys watching a train wreck. You know it's all going to end in tears, but you're almost powerless to stop it. I still think it peaked around season 5, with Glenn Close, she was fantastic in that role. Also, The Shield seems to have paved the way for Sons of Anarchy, which is basically Macbeth on two wheels, but it was a lot of fun too. Lately we've been watching The Blacklist. Highly recommend it, weird as this might sound, it's almost like someone thought to combine Scooby Doo and Silence of the Lambs. Fans of The X-Files will enjoy it, if you liked the aspects of the show that weren't the sci-fi focus. Either way folks, what a time we live in, that we can watch whole seasons of a show, at our leisure, without having to buy a crate full of VHS tapes or insanely priced DVD's!

I miss the youtube buffer that you describe, it was nice. Recently had an issue with playback on my computer, and in my search for a fix, discovered that you can use an extension on Firefox (and presumably other browsers) to download the video to your PC. Unfortunately it seems the resolution is capped at 720p due to the way higher resolutions are streamed, but still, it's a nice feature for essentially the same reasons you point out.

I'm curious how they'll handle the boars in Japan... my family now lives in east Texas, they're very much a nuisance down there, as Jake points out above. I had no idea they had migrated all the way up to Saskatchewan though, wow! Fun part about boars and other wild pigs? Typical hand guns and even some smaller rifles have difficulty killing them with a head shot. That, and they're ill tempered, tough, and powerful. In other words, if the first couple rounds don't kill them, they take a while to bleed out, and will fight until the last breath. There's a reason they used to have spears with a large cross bar on them, it was to keep boars from eating those who stabbed them...

Well said. I find that I played games as a kid mostly because I didn't have too many other hobbies, or the weather was miserable outside, that sort of thing. Plus, played a lot with friends and my brother and sister. Now that the siblings live 1800 miles away and almost all my friends have families of their own, I don't play a whole lot myself. Watch plenty on youtube, I must admit. Good Lord, I just realized that I've been playing games, in one way or another, for THIRTY years now. What year IS it? Please start a thread on this when you make some progress. This is something I'll be doing eventually myself, but I'm no carpenter, so it's possible mine will be made of metal. Very much looking forward to what you come up with, after seeing the work on the PC case you did a while back. Matt, been a pleasure chatting with ya over the years, always feel free to stop by and say hello!

Franchises That Need To Put Out a New Game!
te72 replied to Phillyman's topic in Current Generation Video Gaming!
I find this to be such an interesting point. The GTA series has been polished up so nicely in recent years that they've almost eliminated entire genres of arcade like games. It's impressive on a technical level, at the very least. As for franchises I would love to see a new game from, it's pretty easy for me, although I can't help but get the feeling that I'm forgetting a big one that didn't get its due respect in the sequel department... -Legacy of Kain. Get Amy Hennig back on the case, and tell her to bring some of that Uncharted money with her. Imagine Nosgoth, looking as nicely as Uncharted 4. Stop drooling on yourself, you know it would be awesome. -Suikoden. This universe still holds so many mysteries all these years later, it almost seems they left a lot of loose strings to tie up so they would have an excuse to make another one. However, it's been over 10 years now since Suikoden 5, and with Konami's wayward ways as of late... not to mention the disbanding of the team that made the series, I don't see it happening. -Portal. This one almost seems obvious. But, as we all know, Valve cannot possibly figure out what number comes after 2, soooo... I'd have to look through my collection. I would love a proper console sequel to Valkyria Chronicles. VC2 was kinda disappointing to me, despite some nice improvements, and I don't believe VC3 was even released in English. -
What were your go to games when Arcades were king?

Well aware of that inevitability. Would have to make the machine spill and vomit proof, that would probably be a deal breaker. Oooh! It could be used as an intoxication level test! If you're found to be playing the game, clearly, you've had one too many. -
Pong Coffee Table (Kickstarter)
te72 replied to Phillyman's topic in Current Generation Video Gaming!
I'll take ten! Now I just need some of that Fry money and someone to tell them to shut up and take said money... Just kidding, I'd rather have an air hockey table, cool as this Pong table looks. I wouldn't feel guilty about what I'd do to an air hockey setup... Could probably convince my boss to buy one of these though. He loves old Atari stuff. Thanks for sharing Philly! -
I have a Casio G'zone Brigade. I've had this phone for 6 years as of next month. Pretty sure I could take a swing at it with a golf club, but I wouldn't wanna risk breaking one of my clubs... I'm obviously not in the market for a phone that plays videogames, but I have no doubt that if anyone could sell one, it would be Nintendo. I like the idea of the Xperia, in theory at least, but I don't use a phone for anything other than communication. Either way, if they did make it, they would be wise to avoid making it look anything like a taco.

Figure we could use a thread just for this game, no? If not for adult responsibilities like the mortgage, paying off my credit card, and needing to buy a transmission jack so I can make my Supra better... I would be buying a Switch, literally to play just this game. Not very often that a game makes me want to buy the console to play it. Last time was probably Valkyria Chronicles, on the PS3. What makes it so special, you might ask? My thoughts, based on what I've seen and the impressions I've gotten so far, relate to some of my favorite games from the PS1 era: Tail of the Sun: Large, open world to just... explore. Oh, but don't starve, so better make sure you hunt and forage. Be careful how far out you try to swim, you might not make it... Tail of the Sun made me appreciate how a simple game could mesmerize, and BotW shows it carries the influence of a persistent tribe of cavement from 20 years ago. This is perhaps my favorite aspect of the new game. Metal Gear Solid: The combat of both games, is entirely up to you to engage or find other ways of dealing with enemies and the threats they pose. You can sneak, you can fight, you can sabotage, you can run. Weapons, procure on site, which I just now realized that "procure on site" would have an acronym of POS, which it seems a lot of the weapons in BotW are, haha. Aside from the combat, I think players of both games are going to have unique, if generally good, experiences with their playthrough. For a game to be both widely played, yet uniquely special to the player... I like that. Certain kind of magic in the design when a game can pull this off. Final Fantasy 7: Honestly, the two games couldn't be much more different. One is an action rpg, the other is a turn based rpg. One has fantastic music, the other has... not much music. One has a deep story with defined personas, the other is a Zelda game, which is to say that the series has always been more focused on the gameplay rather than the story. All that said, both games are RICH with atmosphere. Every locale that I've seen so far in BotW just seems... fresh. FF7 had the same thing going on, every town was its own little (or big) place. For a big world to feel big, places have to be full of personality. Atmosphere checks off one of the big three boxes for me. Portal: Ok, so Portal isn't a PS1 game. Heck, it isn't even a PS2 game. I can see a lot of the brain teasers from Portal carrying the influence into BotW though, and I really appreciate that. It's like Nintendo took the best parts of some of the best games, sprinkled some of that Zelda charm on them, stirred it all up, and out popped a new Zelda game. Now... put the extra $400 towards paying off the credit card, or pick up a Switch and BotW? This could be a hard one...

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Map Size
te72 replied to Phillyman's topic in Current Generation Video Gaming!
Been watching Mike Matei play it on Youtube. Apart from the things that give him trouble that make me wanna yell at him through the screen in vain, I find the game quite fascinating. Not sure if there is a main thread for this game, but I almost want to buy a Switch, simply to play this game. Actually, if there isn't a main thread for BOTW, I'm gonna go make one. -

I can barely play that game sober... wonder if anyone ever beat it in such an establishment? On the note of arcade games in bars, has anyone seen a DDR machine in a bar? I've seen a couple karaoke setups, but never a DDR machine. One can only imagine the hilarity that would ensue. -

Still remember playing the sit down cabinet of the Star Wars arcade game. What a thrill! This was sometime in 1998, I believe it was. So, a full 15 years after it initially was released, and it blew my young mind that such a cool experience could be had. Wouldn't mind a cabinet for the basement, I think it might be one of those experiences that is pretty much timeless as far as games go. -

RD, you bring up a good point. Places that traditionally had arcade machines, do they still? Every once in a great while, I come across one, and I like to think that I drop a few quarters in them just as an obligatory thank you to the owner, but how often do you see arcade machines in the wild? Where I live, almost never, unfortunately. Our local arcade sells flooring now, it was super weird going in there as often as we did when the house was being built... just didn't feel right in any sense. What about places like roller or hockey rinks, laser tag venues, mini-golf, those sorts of places, are they still around? -

Not sure if it was already mentioned or not, but Primal Rage. Sure, it's a product of its time, a game about dinosaurs fighting, completely mid-90's, that much is obvious. That aside, it was the first game I played that had an absolutely enormous monitor. I mean today we all have screens that big, but back then, to see a game that bright and loud on what must have been a 50" screen right in front of you? It was simply awesome. Plus, dinosaurs fighting. Not sure if that was clear, but that kinda makes it awesome by default. -

Jake, I would have been in peak appreciation age for wrestling then, pretty sure that game ate a few weeks worth of allowance down at the local Aladdin's Castle for me. Thanks for sharing man! -
I loved that stuff in GTA3, but for whatever reason, didn't care for Vice City, and didn't bother with San Andreas. By the time I played GTA4, the stunt jumps were a little more difficult to really notice where they would be... plus, with 3, my younger brother and I would just drive around screwing off. Now that he lives in another state, I was playing solo, so it wasn't quite as much fun. The laughs are a lot better to share with a game like that. You know, I don't even want to know the amount of time I've wasted on stuff I don't even remember. Sadly, most games and movies fall into this category, even ones I really enjoyed at some point, the memories are deeply buried, or possibly forgotten at this point. Specifically on the subject of Morrowind, when a friend showed me that you learned the story through reading random books in people's houses, I knew right then I wouldn't be able to play a game like that. If I wanted to read a book, I would, you know... read a book. Makes you look at prioritizing in a whole new light though, doesn't it?

Sounds like my Dragon Quest 8 and FF12 games. Pretty sure I have something like 250 hours into each of them. Suikoden 5 was in a similar boat, something like 200 or so... GTA games, while fun, are so massive that you could probably play for years without finding EVERYTHING, assuming you don't use a walk through or other form of help. Would I be correct in assuming you don't play games like Skyrim or Fallout? Neat as they are, I just wouldn't be able to put them down if I got absorbed into them.

Good to know, I must have only ever seen the 4-player cabinet. Wonder how expensive that 6-player version must have been?
