  7. It'd print money. http://thenextweb.com/shareables/2016/07/15/someone-built-a-pokedex-battery-case-for-pokemon-go-and-nintendo-should-too/
  8. I've been eyeing Rhea/Phoebe for a while. I hear it's an easy enough install - no soldering work required - but I prefer the (semi) external plug-and-play option if I can get away with it. My Sega Saturn drive is still functional - knock on wood - so there's really no reason to pull it at this point. (That said, I have been picking up spare optical drive systems for modification - working on a Xbox - and will probably do the same with others eventually. Saturn included.) Would like to find a good external Dreamcast PnP solution but they don't seem to exist - bottleneck with the serial port, apparently.
  9. As a retro gamer who prefers playing on original hardware - as it should be - I've been facing what is a common problem anymore: dead or dying optical drives. My PSP's drive died while in storage (?!?) and my Sega CD is beginning to show it's age. So over the past year or two, I've been keeping an eye on various optical drive "bypass" efforts. Essentially replacing the intended means of reading software with something more reliable and solid state. With more modern systems, this usually involves mods allowing for better realized hard drive support, etc. But during the industry's earlier transition to optical, systems were more proprietary and less flexible. The Sega Saturn included - my fave system of the 32/64-bit era. So needless to say, the idea of some sort of bypass for the Saturn is very exciting. I was a little surprised to hear this works via the VCD module slot instead of the Saturn's standard cart slot, but hey, no complaints here. Here's the full skinny. It's long and filled with technobabble but is fascinating if you're into this kind of thing.
  10. I can't help but think this may be Nintendo's best selling system this upcoming holiday season. How bittersweet would that be?
  11. Youtuber Metal Jesus recently found a Nintendo 64 disc drive prototype apparently intended for stateside release. http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2016/07/rare-us-version-of-the-n64s-disc-drive-add-on-unearthed-near-seattle/ A cool find. I'm sure we'll learn more via his channel eventually. Let the double-dee jokes begin.
  12. Agreed. Some folks consider nostalgia to be a weakness for Nintendo - and yeah, it can be sometimes - but damn if it isn't also a great strength for the company when channeled properly. I doubt it'll do nearly as well but I can see this plug-n-play appealing to the same casual crowd currently enamored by Pokemon Go. If a bit older.
  13. Neat. I already own most of the NES games listed but will probably pick one up for the nostalgic vibe (love the packaging) and the save state feature. REALLY digging the controller. They'll apparently retail for $10 each and are Wii/WiiU Virtual Console compatible.
  14. So this is a thing. http://www.ign.com/articles/2016/07/11/someone-made-a-game-that-works-on-the-unreleased-nintendo-playstation
  15. Bump - made a few edits to the OP. You may find the latest issue of Little Player at your local Barnes & Noble.
  16. Batman: The Video Game is fantastic - one of my favorite NES games. A shame the game is lost in legal limbo - would love to see it re-released on Virtual Console. A hidden gem, honestly. The Joker and the preceding Firebug are tough but once you get their patterns down, they're not too awfully difficult. The trick is working through the clock tower level multiple times - and having enough life in reserve - so you have an opportunity to learn their patterns. Yeah, Sunsoft's 8 and 16-bit Batman movie games are really fun. Konami delivered some excellent Dark Knight titles too, back in the day. It wasn't until the Arkham series before the character made a return to form. There was a very long string of lousy Batman games in-between.
  17. Updated the OP with some recent info - some firm details on issue #1/2, mostly. (Thanks Ebay.) Updated the publication dbase as well. As for the broken images, I'm reminded of Thundarr the Barbarian's attempt to find a parking space.
  18. OP updated with TheRedEye's 2013 info. It's odd a digital version of the 2013 issue may not exist. With GDM struggling that year, you'd think it would have been the easier alternative to a physical print run. Thanks for checking, TheRedEye!
  19. Honestly, you may want to skip NES Metroid and play GBA Metroid: Zero Mission instead. It's a remake of the first game and a fine one at that. It helps link the earlier 2D games to the later Metroid Prime franchise, too. Don't get me wrong - NES Metroid will always have a place on my game shelf. But it's definitely wanting when compared to Super Metroid, which is still the pinnacle of the series, imo. Would love to see Nintendo remake Metroid II someday.
