What classics do you have on your xbox 360/ONE?
RetroDefense replied to JoeyBean's topic in Retro Video Gaming!
I play classics & quality remakes on modern systems all the time - I'm a sucker for physical retro compilations, actually. Uber-excited for Rare Replay on Xbox One. I don't like to download classics though. I don't consider downloading a digital video game to actually be ownership - with today's heavy-handed DRM, they're more like extended rentals - so I'll almost always try to find the original, physical game instead. That said, I've made exceptions for rare, expensive physical games. And I'll sometimes buy digital downloads to compliment my physical original if there's some additional benefit (save states, portability, etc). I'll also grab arcade releases if no satisfactory physical port exists or if the price is right. So I have a few. Off the top of my head: The classic TMNT and X-Men arcade games R-Type Dimensions - physical home ports will continue on but I'll miss those revamped graphics Guardian Heroes - I sold my Saturn copy years ago (doh) Afterburner Climax - happy to know the arcade version will continue to exist, somewhere Duck Tales Remastered - I really need to pick up the physical disc sometime Strider - digital-only in the states but Japan's PS3 physical release is region-free, apparently -
I think they've nailed the spirit of the character this time. Looking forward to Feb 2016! (And I gotta say - it's about time Reynolds gets his due. This is - what - his 4th superhero film? He deserves the props.)

I've read & watched a few reviews. The core OS sounds promising and I'll likely install it on my laptop eventually. But this is what I was afraid of: http://www.forbes.com/sites/gordonkelly/2015/08/05/windows-10-charging/ Looks like Microsoft's latest OS has joined the world of DLC, micro-transactions and subscriptions. *Sigh* As much as I hate it, I can understand the nickel-and-dime business model. And I suppose it isn't all bad - there are always third party software options. This isn't a monopolistic, closed video game system, after all. But if Microsoft is going to try charging us for Solitaire and DVD playback, I can't imagine it will stop there.

Kickstarter: Little Player - Video Game Magazine For Kids
RetroDefense replied to RetroDefense's topic in Magazine Talk
Maybe this is the kind of thing RetroMags should support with a plug on the home page, via Twitter, etc? I think it's fair to say we all have an interest in video game magazines. Not only in regards to their preservation but also the continuation of the (arguably outdated but still crazy awesome) content delivery model. -

Hi everyone, Areala already mentioned this Kickstarter project in the Shoutbox but I thought it deserved a thread of its own. If you missed it, a kickstarter is currently underway for Little Player, a new video game magazine for kids. Based on what I've seen with Issue 0 (you can download the PDF via the Kickstarter page), the magazine reminds me of the all-ages mindset of early Nintendo Power combined with a layout reminiscent of early EGM. (Which makes sense, actually, as Martin Alessi is leading the charge.) I really like the idea of Little Player. My kids are well past the target demographic but I decided to back the project anyway. As much as I enjoyed later issues of Nintendo Power, I always felt a little disappointed the magazine was no longer as kid friendly as it used to be. That an all-ages magazine may be back on the market is something gamers and the industry should embrace, imo. Unfortunately, the project is far from hitting its target goal. Video gaming parents may not feel the need for something like Little Player as they're already invested in gaming and don't need help making decisions. Perhaps the project would've garnered more attention through traditional parenting sites - for parents less interested in video gaming but looking for something kid-friendly. Doesn't hurt that it spurs reading, too. Give it a look if you're inclined, and thanks, Areala, for letting everyone know about it! https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/massiveimpactinc/little-player-video-game-magazine-for-kids/description

I use CDisplay Ex on my Windows 7 computers and ComiCat on my Kindle. ComiCat may be available for iOS but I'm not sure.

Retromags August 2015 Contest - Win a copy of Mighty No. 9
RetroDefense replied to Phillyman's topic in Retromags News
Great choice for a prize giveaway! -
I know the poster wasn't exclusive to the magazine but the completist in me just can't let this go. Team Sega Newsletter #7 (December 1989) - missing poster.

The Team Sega Newsletter #7 (December 1989) is preserved and ready for download/mirroring. https://archive.org/details/tsn_007 Sorry, this magazine scan doesn't include the Altered Beast poster. Not a huge deal, really - the poster wasn't unique to the magazine and is fairly common. It was included with a Genesis game or two, if I recall - maybe with the original release of Altered Beast? It features Genesis Altered Beast artwork on the front, a "Your World Will Never Be The Same" advertisement on the back. Here's a visual aid.

An edited Next Generation #49 (January 1999) is preserved and ready for download/mirroring. https://archive.org/details/ng_49 Once again, thanks to marktrade for the scan work!

An edited Video Games & Computer Entertainment #2 (February 1989) is preserved and ready for download/mirroring. https://archive.org/details/vgce_02 I'm only responsible for the editing on this one - thanks to RetroMags' own marktrade for all of the scan work! (If you'd like to help with his backlog of unedited magazines, please check out his Work In Progress discussion.)

The Fifteen Most Difficult NES Games (That Are Not Battletoads)
RetroDefense replied to Areala's topic in Retro Video Gaming!
Had an opportunity to read this last night. I agree with twiztor - the humor really helped hold my attention and made for a fun read. I also appreciated the level of detail in some of the game bios - comparisons between NES and Famicom releases, etc. I was also impressed with the selection of games. It's clear he put some thought into this article instead of throwing together just another top list - most of these would have slipped my mind entirely. Nicely done! -
Just to make it official. Currently editing (from marktrade's unedited queue): Next Generation #49 Next Generation #53 VideoGames & Computer Entertainment #2

PSM #55 (February 2002) is preserved and ready for download/mirroring. https://archive.org/details/psm55 Thanks for the VG&CE scan, marktrade!

DONE! Video Game Collector has been added to the system and is ready for indexing/preservation! Gallery http://community.retromags.com/gallery/category/365-video-game-collector/ Publication https://www.retromags.com/publications/category/united-states/video-game-collector Magazine https://www.retromags.com/magazines/category/usa/video-game-collector If you have any information about this magazine, please chime in with whatever details you can share. An entry has already been added to RetroMags' publication database, but with more information, we can eventually begin indexing issues! Video Game Collector was a semiannual magazine/price guide with a predominate focus on retro game collecting. It was originally distributed - at least in part - via Blockbuster rental stores and Diamond Distributors (making the magazine available via specialty retailers and comic book stores). It appears to be defunct with no new issues published since 2010. While a website for the magazine still exists - and currently accepts online orders - there are numerous reports of later orders going unfulfilled. Buyer beware. The magazine appears to have been printed in a smaller, perhaps comic book sized format with issues #1-4, switching to a traditional magazine format with issue five. Name: Video Game Collector Website: www.vgcollector.com (now inactive) Country of Origin: USA Number of issues: 12 (13?) Dates of each issue: 1/2: Summer 2005 1: Summer 2004 2: Fall 2004 3: Spring 2005 4: Summer 2005 5: Spring 2006 6: Summer 2006 7: Winter 2007 8: Spring 2007 9: Spring 2008 10: Summer 2008 11: Fall 2009 Big Bang 2010 special (exist?) The 'Big Bang 2010' issue was presumably published in 2010 and - judging by the cover - focuses on the Donkey Kong high score rivalry popularized by the video game documentary, The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters. The magazine's website displays three variant covers for this issue - Billy Mitchell, Walter Day, and Steve Weibe. This may have never made it to print - I've yet to see this issue in the wild so haven't added it to the dbase. The Spring 2006 issue was available in two editions - the usual standard, as well as a deluxe edition with limited/numbered Dragon's Lair mini cell trading card. The card itself was randomly selected from a set of ten. A #1/2 issue was also published. Whether this was ever made available separately via the online storefront or only as part of the "GIVE ME EVERYTHING! Collecto Package," I don't know. The issue is presumably promotional - the cover clearly states "FREE" in place of a cover price and judging by the cover copy reprints material from prior issues. Some reference links: Video review of some Video Game Collector issues - those boxart checklists look really nice. Video Game Obsession - cover gallery, including Dragon's Lair card scans and Spoonman's bio. Rob O'Hara's VGC portfolio --- 7/9/2016 edit - website no longer active; pulled dead links; added new #1/2 info; added #1/2 issue to formal list 7/17/16 edit - Big Bang 2010 and issue #1/2 details; portfolio link; flagged as DONE!

If you have any issues of VG&CE not already preserved, go ahead and upload 'em! My eventual VG&CE scans are going to take some extra time & work as I won't be debinding the issues, so any you can add to the archive, the better. The Team Sega Newsletter issue is something of a test run for my future VG&CE scans, actually. I'm committed to editing those three Next Generation issues and will probably edit more of your scans eventually. Especially VG&CE and NG, as those are some of my favorite 'zines and I'm glad to see them preserved. You'll find I like to jump around just so I don't get bored with any one thing, though. One day I'll be scanning, the next indexing, or editing, or working with cover galleries, or posting about missing mags, etc. E-Day, it's a short magazine so shouldn't take long!
