New Query Pages Being Created For Databases
Sean697 replied to Phillyman's topic in Database Discussions
I've been manually doing this stuff to keep the EGM sorted. Which we should be at he moment. But haven't really looked at the other mags. Great idea. -
I think the documentation in the forum is more than adequate. I personally don't see the need to preserve that as it wasn't meant to be seen. But it is very interesting to document.
-
Stuff like this is why these games mags need preservation.

Ok I dug a little info up. That game was originally titled pre release Young Olympians. But it underwent extensive changes and was released as Barbarian as a fighting game. https://www.unseen64.net/2008/04/08/saffire-young-olympians-gc-tech-demo-proto/

The only game I can think of that is even remotely similar is Sphinx on the GameCube. Which is a really good game that didn't sell well. A hidden gem if you wil. But I see no involvement of Saffite Corp. in that game. Probrably an unreleased title.

Whats your favorite classic video game magazine?

Joystick had some pretty amazing layouts. I wish I would have read more of them, I've only ever seen a few issues.- 94 replies

Unfortunately things don't work like that, I kind of had the same mindset coming into this. Maybe someday archive.org will become that.thats why I decided to do something about it myself. My personal goal is to get every EGM in our database. Instead of asking other people to do it for me, I'm taking all the steps (with help) that I can to get that accomplished. I initially donated all my magazines to scanners on the site, then purchased magazines to get scanned, then started scanning myself. Why, because unless you take a personal stake into getting it done, it probrably won't get done. I personally have no problem with my scans being hosted elsewhere. I've told OGM they can host any of my scans. I've also proposed in the past uploading all,our scans on archive. Which will possibly be happening. But unfortunately a lot of scans sites are very territorial about their scans. So I understand respecting that. It's bad etiquette to just steal someone else work and host it as your own. Especially considering the work that goes into making these scans. A better approach would be working out deals with other sites to share scans. Or convincing scanners to host their work at our site in addition to others. So I disagree the best way to get stuff archived is to have it in as much hands as possible, not that isn't true, the best thing to do is get involved. Whether donating to our eBay slush fund, or the site, or donating magazines to get scanned, or scanning yourself. Don't expect others to do it, or ask we host people's scans that we didn't do. That and change the mindset and make stuff you have contributed available to others and archive in addition to here. I choose here because this is the most healthy and viable magazine preservation site. And has a great database and wiki functions. I don't speak for the main admins of this site, but I would think their sentiments are not too far off. In addition it seems like I'm this scanning scene there was plenty of drama in the past involving who has the rights to scans that resulted in scans being pulled from our site. Our rules are here for a reason because there was dram in the past. And the last thing we need is some pissed off scanner bringing the attention of what we do to the people who hold the rights to these mags because they are pissed off we stole their scan. Our current system makes it abundantly clear that the work you submit is your own, and you are giving the site the right to host and or share it it, with no right to withdraw it. When our EGM is complete I'll probrably focus my attention on VG&CE or Gamepro.

The Sega CD version was very close to arcade perfect. It didn't have the color pallete of the arcade so colors were not quite as good. And it had a new improved soundtrack streaming off the CD. But other than that yes it was arcade perfect.- 94 replies

Just thought I'd bump this. This podcast is fairly enjoyable. Plus what other podcast can you hear in depth discussion of 16 bit games, and secret service raids on your house, and a crystal meth fueled week long sessions of Final Lap Twin? No I'm not joking, these things are in the podcast. And add a very personal touch to it. I'm not judging. Could maybe use a little editing and streamlineing. But lots of new podcasts have that issue. Sometimes when the author is reiterating a point for the third time I just want say get on with it, I get it already.

The first game was kind of rough. Once Lakers vs Bulls came out it got all the play time. But NBA license was top notch. And the manual with all the teams and players and stats was amazing. All things considering, mthenliknesses were amazing. If you knew the real players there strengths were fairly well approximated in the real game. I think the more sim aspects of it didn't bother me. As far as the collision detection. You ever see a real NBA game (of course you have)? You couldn't just plow through to the basket, you had to work the ball and find your way out of the logjam. Much like real basketball. I liked that aspect of it. That's why teams with quick point guards were good, you could outrun the defense and get a more favorable shot off, or pass to someone who was open.

Ya we try and do all our own scans. Even if we did mirror something , it's only with permission. And we would eventually try to get our own scan. I think we don't need to be the repository for other sites scans. I mean just go to the other site. Now if you were involved with a scan and wanted to submit it here with a Retromags splash page that's fine. But if you didn't scan you would have to get permission from the site that it is on. And Retromags scans do need to meet quality standards. Our scanning guide is pretty liberal and not that restrictive , so if it does t meet that we wouldn't want to put it up. There are some cases we provide a mirror link. For instance the Top Score newsletter by Steve Harris. There is a site that has 4 of the issues. The site author did not give us permission to host the scan here. However he did give us permission to link to his site from our database. If I see the issues we are linking too I intend to aquired them and make our own site hosted scan. Because they are very rare and don't show up on eBay hardly ever if all that was acceptable. Plus the issues he has are not edited at all and are hosted on his webpage as images with no cropping. However high quality cover scans aquired from somewhere else are acceptable to upload to out cover gallery.

Oh man that came out fantastic! Loved the poster inside. It came out great.

So was there any downside? Did it get all the page? I mean if you have nice clean pages that seems ideal. Did it make straitening harder?

If you could take a moment to peruse this thread, https://community.retromags.com/topic/10120-egm-audit-thread-and-needed-corrections/?p=42871#entry42871 Trying to fix our EGM scans. If you can provide raw scans for any of items that have missing pages, damaged pages, or have alternate covers , we could use them to make our existing scans complete. For example on of the more pressing items is EGM 86 has been scanned, but needs the last 4 pages to release it. You don't need to do any editing , just scan preferably to a tiff with descreen turned on to reduce Moire artifacts and make them available.

I have aquired I think all of these for scanning. Hopefully within the year these will be done. You can view the magazine database to see what has been scanned, what's missing, and what's on deck to scanned.

New Release: Electronic Gaming Monthly Issue 94 (May 1997)

Yessss! You have now motivated me to get back to scanning today. -
In reply I'll just post the link to his description on the blog. http://questicle.net/2016/02/the-nes-compendium-is-now-on-kickstarter.html Every single review has been revised and revised or rewritten. I think he started this project over 5 years ago or more. He's become a much better writer since then. So apparently the book is revised to reflect that. For a more recent look at his review style and writing I'd check out some of his reviews on the Segadoes website. Which I am a big fan of. But needless to say it is not just a regurgitation of the blog reviews. Plus it's nice to have a book around to check out reviews of a NES game if you have the itch. And also preserves a piece of gaming history. Even if you just get the digital copy.

I have no idea why the kickstarter video wont embed on these board posts.

http://kck.st/1R6Tt2m Thought I'd bring attention to this project. Dylan Cornelious. Who years ago wrote a review for every NES game released on questicle.net , has revised and compiled his reviews with additional content into the Nintendo NES Compendium. He's actually ago of good writer. Also includes box art for every game. I believe the book is more or less ready to go. Help him and get the project funded so the I tial batch of books can be printed.mi know he's spent a lot of time putting this together and even traveled to book publishers to put the book together. Plus you can get the digital copy in May which is fairly soon after the Kickstarter ends. I know he has the book complete so there really is no risk backing this. Basically by funding this he covers the costs to go to press on it. Also has a forward by retro games enthusiast writer Jeremy Parish. Anyway I know Pat Contri also has his book coming out. But I really think Dylan's writing will carry this book much better than that one. Plus a much less cluttered layout. Consider helping him get this book out, if even for the digital copy, or just 5.00 to help it get made. I personally am a big fan of his current project, segadoes.com , where he reviews and plays every game released on every Sega console ever. He's already up to the start of the Genesis. And is the only good resource I know of for SG-1000 reviews. He also runs a companion podcast for the Sega does project.

If you want, you can upload you scans to like Dropbox or something (free account ) and I'll use photoshop to straighten , crop and edit them for you. You really have to use an image editing program to do it properly.

https://community.retromags.com/gallery/category/1-usa-magazines/#.VreohPBpZCk I was just going by the guidelines listed at the top the gallery section. I believe it has to do with how large the magazine images appear when linked in resized to the database.

I've found google chrome is the only browser that works perfectly for this of forum. IE has all kind of problems with this forum. Firefox as well. Google chrome seems to do everything correctly. I guess Safari works on my iPad as well but there are still some quirks.
