  1. I remember being old enough computer mags didn't have demo disks, mother had programs in them you had to type in yourself printed in them. Used to get them and type in all these demos and games, figure out all the typos you made to get it to work. And occasionally have to wait for the next issue for corrections where they printed the code wrong.
  2. Also I haven't really gotten over to check out OPM yet, so I don't know the scope of the mags you preserving but it seems like it is generally less American mags. But if you want to use any of my scans over there you have my permission to take them and use them on your site. http://community.retromags.com/user/18969-sean697/#.VksPA3ppZCk
  3. I'm not like filling them in with a paint tooll or anything, the paper grain is still preserved. Though with black it's harder to see but you can still see the ink process. I'm removing the specks of dust and small ink splatters that you can't really see when reading the real magazine. Or that are obvious priming press errors. (For artwork I leave it alone as I don't want to alter the image.)The overall print texture is preserved. Using a small but not too small clone stamp it basically copy's the texture from a better part of the background.I guess part of it is I used to work in an aluminum can factory, and the printing on the soda cans I got very accustomed to seeing the different kinds of print defects due to the print rollers. A lot of these older mags exhibit these and I try to remove them to see the page as intended. If you had those errors on a can you'd stop the printers, adjust the rollers and ink trays and throw all those cans in the recycler. On these mags they just let them through. It's possible that many of the issues might not have the same print defects depeinng on the print run.

  7. Awesome. Been waiting to read this (as a scan) for awile!
  8. I think how you want to do cards is up to you. It doesn't really mess up the numbering, just like page 13a etc and they fit right in between the regular page numbers. But I have to say , while I haven't had time to check all of your golden age mags you've put up yet, the ones I have are fantastic. I think the site is lucky there is someone who is preserving these pre Nintendo magazines. I certainly hope to see more and will be checking all of them out later. I especially liked that Vidiot you did.
  9. While I'm still awaiting a database entry for my previous scan, I'm about half way done with EGM9. Maybe I'm spending a little to much time editing. But mostly I just haven't had a lot of time lately. I get in a little editing when I can. Should be done this week. One thing this issue has a lot of black background pages on ads. Which are like the bane of my existence. They tend to show a ton of dust and spots, which I've been taking time to meticulously remove. Maybe I'm going to far but I feel like I need to to it so I am am. I think in the end it looks nicer. When I finish an issue I'll probably show a before and after so you can see what I mean.
  10. I always includethem. Only because I think the old site guide said to include them. I think it's really up to you how to implement. What I've been doing is scanning how it would appear in the mag with the background page blurred with the focus on the card. You could just do a small image with the card. Or I suppose not include them if you didn't want to?
  11. You can see my Work in progress thread. But I'm a little over half way done editing.ive just been real, busy so haven't been able to devote time. Next week it should be out.

    IPAD Pro

So I just got the new iPad pro. So some pluses and minuses. My god do magazines look great on this thing. I'm using the YAC reader app and the scans are fantastic looking and huge. It really feels like reading a full size mag. The screen is nearly the same size as as full EGM. Of course it is displaying the images at only 2100 pixels high of the scans I have on it. But looks amazing. I haven't messed around to much with the other feature on the iPad yet. But definitely, for magazine scans it kicks ass. The bad news. I was downloading all my scans directly to the app. And not using a computer to sync. Well my whole collection on my old iPad is stranded. There is no way to get them off the iPad. iTunes backup does not back up app data in iOS 9. So none of mags restored in the backup. And even third party readers and file managers cannot bypass the iOS 9 restriction. So I have no way to get my mags stranded on the iPad and now have to redox load all my EGM s again! This seriously sucks. I guess from now on I'll download them to my PC and then sync them to my iPad. But I seriously hate connecting my iPad to my PC whatsoever. But that will prevent this from happening again. If I was on iOS 8 I could have backed up the whole app and restored it. (Well not really because the iPad pro is ios9) but the YAC reader app is not meant to be your library, just download stuff from your main library. So when I DL anything straight to the app it's stuck there. I even emailed the app developer and he said there is no way to recover my mags. I'll post some pictures later.
  13. E-Days work in progress thread. Was for EGM 86. I believe it was last 4 pages. But might want to double check.
  14. This is beyond great! This looks like it only needs minor work! I can do this and get it up and credit you on this. It looks good in my reader app on my iPad, just needs minor cropping and straitening. It is after all a mostly B&W newsletter except for the color ad.Really interesting to see the beggining said of regular EGM features. Like the Quartermann column.
  15. Edited 10 pages today on EGM 9. Done for the day. Could never match that output.
  16. I went ahead and bid on this anyway. But it ended up going for 88.77. A little out of my range for something that marginally interests me.
  17. And of course OGM and OoPA. I just didn't want to make a list of scanning sites, Again generalizations. You guys are great too.
  18. Yes I didn't know it was you who has them. Just taking in generalities. I know you are constantly working on cool stuff. But that's cool to know you have access to them.
  19. Ya the editorial actually says this issue of electronic gaming. But it's kind of a side thing. The issue I scanned does not have the duplicate pages. If you still have that scan of top score 5 (nov/dec) we could use it for the site as it has a database entry and cover attached already. Since you already scanned it. If you don't have time for editing I'd take care of it.
  20. I'm not sure if this is ideal for magazine scans. I'd have to see its color properties and resolution better. But let us know when you get one. It looks pretty cool for, other uses.
  21. Saw this today. An auction for an exclusive CES issue of Game Players. My plate is kind of full. But if someone wants to pick this up for scanning, I'd be willing to chip in on the price via PayPal if you scan it. http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&alt=web&id=321911138110&globalID=EBAY-US A guide to exhibitors and games at the 1992 consumer electronics show.
  22. My dream job ideally would be not having a job. But that's a cop out. But say I won the powerball and needed something to keep me busy. My dream hooby/job would be to go around the world collection arcade machines and games and make and run the ultimate Sega museum. With every game they ever made in arcades, with many important ones being playable. And hopefully making some money on it.
  23. Well that's a bummer. Preserving this stuff has very controversial opinions in some circles. Some people just can't get by the legal aspect of it (But probrably have no issue using scans) . Others just want to hoard game mags to themselves. Others want to make their own preservation endeavor, that no doubt overlaps with countless others like the library of congress, strong museum of play, various videogame museums etc. I am just interested in having these resources available (easily and readily) to anyone and not just some archivist. I'm sure in many years down the road it's going to be retromags scans standing the test of time and being used rather than these other resources. Real mags are destructible. Gated systems can be lost. Widely distributed user backups is the way to go. Which is why I support this site.
  24. Much like magazines. I've been selling off my games while the selling is good. When a suitable replacement like an everdrive comes along. Sold off all but my most treasured Genesis games. Sold all the 2600 games. Sold all my N64 games except the Rare games. When I get my USB gdrom card I'll probrably be selling off my Dreamcast games as well.
