New Release: Electronic Game Player Issue 1 (January/February 1988)
Sean697 replied to E-Day's topic in New Releases
Awesome. Does that mean the Redeye is going to open the gates on some of his awesome collection? I sure hope so! -
Also to note, the site uses a policy of I believe, 15 year cutoff for actively published magazines, and 10 years? for dufunct magazines. Also you can get actual issues on ebay. And there are a slew of issues uploaded to archive.org, although most of them are from this site from what I've found. And they host them based on historical preservation as a library so the legal issues are somewhat different.
-
Actually it would be quite easy. Dropbox really is an ideal tool for uploading magazines to you guys. The free account generate public or private links for files. In fact I just uploaded the EGM 0 I scanned and PMed the private link to Eday to edit it. Archive.org just requires uploading the magazine to the site and making an entry. In fact it is kind of becoming the default place to look for old game mags. But having the highest quality stuff from here would make it the best. Our database would just need the archive page link and could download straight from there, and preserving old game magazines falls well within the scope of that sites purpose. For all those who haven't checked here is a download link already down by John smith. https://archive.org/details/Next-Generation-1996-09 Of interest is the preview pane where you can flip through the magazine without having to DL it. A direct download of the CBR file. And different version like ePub etc. And if you use the preview pane our website splash page is included. We could rule archive .org with your magazines. Everyone could check out the magazines at little to no effort. Users interface is nice. No shady connection problems or anti virus warnings. Ask John Smith the process of adding mags to the site since he is actively doing it. It should be pretty simple.mi know a lot of gaming vids like Chrontendo and Generation 16 who also post their videos there in 1080p 60fps with no issues.mimwould seriously consider this option.

I don't know what you have in the works. Or if you want to keep the magazines downloads exclusive to this site. But having downloads on archive.org kind of like what John smith is doing would solve all of these problems. As long as the retromags splash page is there, I think that would be the ideal solution.

New Improved Release: Next Generation Issue 21 (September 1996)
Sean697 replied to Phillyman's topic in New Releases
That issue was amazing. Very different from top 100 lists you'd see today. -
What are your rarest prized possessions?
Sean697 replied to bawitback's topic in Retro Video Gaming!
I own those too. I sold my Phantasy Star back in 1988 though for like 60.00 in the classified ads of the newspaper. -
Hey, is the 15 year rule going to roll around at the end of the month? I have the complete 2000 EGMs I'd like to take a crack at scanning.
-
No it's all eday! He scanned and edited it.mi just donated the issue.

What are your rarest prized possessions?
Sean697 replied to bawitback's topic in Retro Video Gaming!
I unintentionally have quite a few rare games. It helps when you were a a video game magazine fanatic back on the 90's and picked up good games that didn't really gain popular appeal. Or had interest in games with Anime in them before it really took off. Or you just happened to have a Saturn and actively bought games for it (Where a lot of my high value games are at.) My Panzer Dragoon Saga, Shining Force 3, and Magic Knight Rayearth on the Saturn are all worth a mint. Some of my Sega CD games like Keio Flying Squadron are really rare today. (A game I picked up on clearance for 15.00) Some of my more prized possessions are not nessesarily rare. Like my Sega CDX. My favorite console design of all time. Or having all the 16-bit Sonic titles. Or having the late release Genesis first person shooter Zero Tolerance with the mail in only Patch cord to link two Genesis together to play separate screen networked multiplayer. Some prized passions are not even retro per se but are so amazing they are worth mentioning, I own a N64 and a Genesis flashcart (Mega Everdrive) that allow me to load every game on the system on an SD card and play every game including imports on real hardware instead of an emulator. I guess also some peripherals are kind of fun to have. Like the Dreamcast fishing controller. The Justifier light gun for lethal enforcers and Snatcher. And the multile odd GC accesories like the microphone attachment (Mario Party), link cables, and broadband adapter. I have a cool little VMU on the Dreamcast that allows you to attach it to a serial cable to a PC and upload and download files from the Internet onto it. Including save games and DL titles. -
Speaking of Game Players. Defunct games us doing a series of Christmas videos on game magazines. 29 days, 29 mags or something. They just released this video on the history of Game Players. http://www.defunctgames.com/29magazines/22/magazine-22-game-players-the-original-spin-off They also did one to clear up some of the confusion about SEGA Force.

In the past I've had that issue with file factory before. Where it glitches when getting the download and won't give it to you. Usually worked when I tried again later. Might have been related to DLing with a free account.
-
Nice. I remember getting pretty much every issue of every mag that had information on the Genesis prior to or around launch. This is one of them. I think I Only subscribed to Game Players for like like 1 year. I always like the drawing of Mega Mans 2 Wilys castle on this cover.

New Magazines Posting today on Ebay for sale by me
Sean697 replied to Sean697's topic in Buying, Selling, Trading
Also to note, all the Gamefans are basically in brand new condition. Look like they were right off the rack. No flaws at all. I think they are magazines that came to my parents house when I moved out already so they just got thrown into a box, never been read, -
I hope you replace the current one. I was reading that one before I sent it off and that was a great issue. And in good condition. If only because to read what was considered the top games of all time mid 90's. I really enjoyed that one. And the follow up later the top multiplayer games of all time.
-
I think Mortal Kombat loses. Just saying.
-
Don't you worry. E-Day has stacks of magazines in his backlog I sent to him for scanning. He'll be busy for quite awhile on those I imagine.
-
I believe what phillyman has planned for the big site hosting will solve these problems. And like I said, anyone could then get all the mags easy and make their own torrent or supervise it for the site with a link here. I wouldn't put that as high priority for the site to do eigther if at all.

Exellent post. I am all for it. The datatbase is great. especially with the contents. If someone is looking for a particular magazine or article, they dont need to wast time downloading all of them. They can just download the one they need because its contents are listed already. And I totally agree on getting people involed with the maging database entries. Its something anyone can do.

Whoa now simmer down. As a lurker for years. This site did have some hiccups but alot of positive things seem to be happening this year. Things seem on the uptick to me. And a small group of people can only do so much. I mean I realize how long scanning and editing takes. John Smith has nearly a complete set of Next Generation now. But with only him scanning and uploading it will take years. E-day has a huge pile I mags I gave him. Any the other few people who are scanning can only put in so much at once. This site could probrably use more scanners. I may start scanning some stuff in my self now that I see how long it takes to get stuff presereved. Lets just say the site is heading in a great direction judging by the changes the last 6 months, and that more great changes are coming, and not try to focus too much on the past. (That I wasnt here for, but people do still think this site has died until I tell them its active again.)
-
I hope you can get the mags up on archive.org. That would be much preferable to file factory. Also because they have a preview function that lets you page through the mag without downloading. They got a great interface for downloading. IE no hassle. Plus it works on my iPad which I primarily use. Can't access any of these on my iPad without transferring from my PC which is a hassle. A torrent is nice but it would take time to make and update. Honestly any one of us could make a torrent and post it. Why don't you make it yourself zarlaxx? I have no desire to download everything or I would do it myself,
-
Awesome. E-day really cleaned that up nicely! (Although the colors came out a little too intense but it looks good. Youd only notice if you had the real magazine.) Had some great stuff that issue. Interestingly enough I noticed that in next years buyers guide for 1990, they give Phantasy Star an award again! Maybe they thought not many people read this one. Or someone really liked Phantasy Star.
-
I guess it's not up yet?
-
Oh wow that was fast. I thought you'd take a week editing that. Just for anyone's info this is the first issue of EGM ever. Sometimes called EGM 0. Has game of the year awards etc.
-
The thing about the Saturn is it has lover a thousand games. And most of them are Japan exclusives. There are Probrably great Saturn games I still haven't heard of.
