  1. If that happens it's to going to be all Mac all the time around here with updates from me. I got Macworld, MacAddict, MacUser, and MacWEEK. It's going to be Mac mayhem!
  2. Some of them were pretty bad and I've already replaced the worst ones. There are a couple that remain that are passable but not good and I'll get to those as well. But I do intend to scan all of them for my personal collection and offer them here. I had always planned to do it at some point, but recent events have spurned me to do it sooner rather than later. If you have anything specific in mind for what else I should be working on, I'll for sure listen.
  3. Is this a hint that Retromags is going to host more general purpose computing magazines?
  4. The old issue is still available on archive.org along with all the other issues from that scanner. There are also three issues hosted on Retromags with a splash page that credits Vanamo Media and were uploaded to archive.org under the user name NightlyNews. I really don't know which ones are JohnSmith and which aren't, but I agree those Vanamo scans are excellent and I may not be able to improve much on those.
  5. The cover paper stock stayed excellent into the third year, but the page stock had already been changed by the second year. It was thick enough that it was closer to hardback book paper than magazine paper.
  6. Sure, look in your FTP folder. You know, if there's any magazine that can make the case of physical superiority over digital, it's the first two years of Next Generation. The smooth sturdy matte finish of the cover and heft of each page, solid enough to not be creased by thumb pinch and not easily dog-eared, just gives me chills. How could I disassemble these beautiful specimens? It sounds crazy but I might actually try gluing these back together. Hey, there are YouTube videos that make me think it can be done.
  7. As long as it meets the approval of the curators. It's going to take me a while to scan replacements so they might wait until I'm done.
  8. You can pick up the boxes and labels for free at the Post Office. You can also order them online and have them and other items delivered for free to your door by the postal carrier. Make sure you get the 11" x 8-1/2" x 5-1/2" medium flat rate box, which fits most US magazines almost perfectly. There's another medium flat rate box that is shaped differently. You can also just measure how high that stack of magazines is. If it's more than 5-1/2" than you'll need a bigger box if you want to ship all of them.
  9. Next Generation Project Completionist Ultra has begun! https://archive.org/details/NextGeneration01Jan1995
  10. That was you?! I saw your first auction but passed because the shipping price was so high. Those look like they could fit in a $14 medium flat rate box. Then I passed on the second auction because I felt I probably wouldn't win it. Well, don't let it go for cheap without letting me know. I'll give you a counter offer. There are still some lingering questions I have that those other issues might help me answer, like the cover variant on that one titled "PC Action" that I have, or text variants in issues that came with a disc or didn't. And of course I'd be able to get a better scan out of the second issue, which had so many pages torn at the spine, and scan the first issue without waiting for VGBounceHouse. I'll send you an offer. You should have told me earlier!
  11. I don't think they ever had any intention of resurrecting PCXL or going in a new direction. The PC Gamer guys were just putting ideas together for a special issue and they thought, "hey this sounds like PCXL." So they got some of the old PCXL staff together and just did this one-off issue.
  12. Issue #2 has been scanned and uploaded. Now, so has the special issue! https://archive.org/details/PCXLSPFall2007 Since there's no place for it here on Retromags, it'll stay on archive.org for now.
  13. I just thought it was especially funny in hindsight, given that "The Orange Box" was one of the most popular retail game boxes of all time and certainly one of the best.
  14. "Deer Hunter sold more than a million copies, and everyone knows the game stinks. So the conventional wisdom is that orange sells games. Look for plenty of orange boxes coming to a store near you." Prescient.
  15. Retromags Presents! PC Accelerator Issue 2 October 1998 Retromags Database Entry Download from Retromags Download from The Internet Archive Thank you to chiavelli for donating this issue!
  16. Here is the scan of my earliest issue of Game Player's PC Entertainment. https://archive.org/details/GPPCEVol5No2 I have five more!
  17. There's also GMR and the US version of Official Sega Dreamcast Magazine. If you click those links you'll be sent to an external site where you can download them individually or all at once in torrent form. We're also on track to complete PC Accelerator soon.
  18. I am also thinking of making my own scans of the earliest issues of Next Generation sooner rather than later. No rush, but it would be nice to have a clean consistent collection that's properly credited and archived in 600 DPI. I've always planned to do that and it's something I want. Maybe one or two issues in every next batch of ten will be early Next Generation.
