  1. I am also thinking of making my own scans of the earliest issues of Next Generation sooner rather than later. No rush, but it would be nice to have a clean consistent collection that's properly credited and archived in 600 DPI. I've always planned to do that and it's something I want. Maybe one or two issues in every next batch of ten will be early Next Generation.
  2. Not to be confused with regular old PC Entertainment, Game Player's PC Entertainment was published bi-monthly in the time between Game Player's PC Strategy Guide and PC Gamer, from 1992 to mid 1994. I haven't confirmed yet exactly when the first issue was and when the last one was. The earliest one I have is the Mar/Apr issue in 1992. It contains a correction for an earlier issue of Game Player's PC Strategy Guide, and given the tendency for magazines to make major name changes at the beginning of the year, I'm led to believe the first issue was Jan/Feb 1992. The online catalog for the Strong Museum of Play contains issues from 1993 and 1994, the latest of which is Mar/Apr 1994. Since the first issue of PC Gamer is dated May/Jun and it replaced Game Player's PC Entertainment, I think it's a safe assumption that that was indeed the last issue. I know Retromags needs confirmed data, but as a working theory I'm going to say there were 14 issues published bi-monthly from Jan/Feb 1992 to Mar/Apr 1994. Until then I'll use this thread to post scans and updates. Issues scanned so far: https://archive.org/details/GPPCEVol5No2 https://archive.org/details/GPPCEVol5No3 https://archive.org/details/GPPCEVol5No4 https://archive.org/details/GPPCEVol5No5 https://archive.org/details/GPPCEVol5No6
  3. Not to be confused with Game Player's PC Entertainment, regular old PC Entertainment was published by IDG and only had five issues. 1 – January 1996 2 – February 1996 3 – March 1996 4 – April 1996 5 – May 1996 After which PC Games took over. I have all five issues, so if we make database entries, it'll be no problem to get them completed.
  4. The space might simply be a legal technicality so two periodicals from the same publisher aren't registered with the same name. Areala, when I get home from work I'll look for it!
  5. 16 of them are online. https://archive.org/details/neogeofreakjp
  6. PCGames started out as a buyer's guide spun off from PC Resource magazine, so it wasn't really its own brand when it started. But I guess since no one else was using the name, it stuck. When Electronic Entertainment changed its name to PC Entertainment, it was only a few months before they changed it to PC Games, probably as a nod to their roots. Actually I think you have the first issue of PC Games (June 1996). Maybe it makes reference to PCGames in the editor's column?
  7. I am looking for info on PC Games as well but we should create a separate thread for that.
  8. Not to be confused with PCGames, which despite also being published by IDG was published much earlier than PC Games. The publisher's notes spell them differently and they were published in different years, so it only makes sense to treat them as different magazines. PC Games started in June 1996 and was published monthly until sometime in 1999. I don't now when exactly the last issue was, but PC Games was purchased by Imagine Publishing in March 1999 and shutdown and I know that an April 1999 issue exists because I have it. So it's basically a question of when exactly the last issue was. Should be simple to add to the database. Edit: Okay, Areala confirms it. That's a total of 35 issues published monthly from June 1996 to April 1999. Here's the full list. 01 Jun 96 02 Jul 96 03 Aug 96 04 Sep 96 05 Oct 96 06 Nov 96 07 Dec 96 08 Jan 97 09 Feb 97 10 Mar 97 11 Apr 97 12 May 97 13 Jun 97 14 Jul 97 15 Aug 97 16 Sep 97 17 Oct 97 18 Nov 97 19 Dec 97 20 Jan 98 21 Feb 98 22 Mar 98 23 Apr 98 24 May 98 25 Jun 98 26 Jul 98 27 Aug 98 28 Sep 98 29 Oct 98 30 Nov 98 31 Dec 98 32 Jan 99 33 Feb 99 34 Mar 99 35 Apr 99
  9. I previously thought of this magazine as IDG's first era of "PC Games" magazine but on closer inspection of the publisher's statements, they're actually spelled differently! There's PCGames, which was published in the late 80s and early 90s, and then there's PC Games, published in the late 90s, both by IDG, and taking place before and after IDG's run of Electronic Entertainment, respectively. Like many other early PC gaming magazines, PCGames is an oddball, first published seasonally, then semi-seasonally or basically whenever they felt like it. Finding a complete catalog any time soon is hopeless, so I'll just use this thread to list confirmed sightings of published issues and their status. Right now most of this list comes from the catalog of the Strong Museum of Play. Scanned issues will be linked and this post will be edited as the thread updates. Please post your sightings! Fall 1988 - Premier Issue (preserved) Spring 1989 (missing) December 1989 (missing) April 1990 (acquired) Sep/Oct 1990 (missing) December 1990 (missing) Jan/Feb 1991 (acquired) Mar/Apr 1991 (missing) October 1991 (missing) November 1991 (missing) December 1991 (missing) Jan/Feb 1992 (missing) Aug/Sep 1992 (preserved) October 1992 (missing) November 1992 (preserved) January 1993 (missing) Feb/Mar 1993 (preserved) Jun/Jul 1993 (missing) September 1993 (acquired) October 1993 (missing) November 1993 (acquired)
  10. While TPTB decide whether CD-ROM Today is an appropriate magazine for this site, I'll post acquisition and scanning updates in this thread and edit original post accordingly.
  11. I'll be working on some scans of magazines that don't have database entries yet. Look for the links around the forum in new threads for those magazines or just check my ADO page.
  12. Here have a scan. https://archive.org/details/GPPCSGVol4No5
  13. In lieu of database entries, we can just use the forum for the time being. That's what I did for PC Accelerator and it worked very well. According to Blair Carter's "Computer Games: A Bibliography with Indexes," Game Player's PC Entertainment was a bimonthly periodical continued by the monthly PC Gamer and before it continued the bimonthly Game Player's PC Strategy Guide, which continued the seasonal Game Player's MS-DOS Strategy Guide before it. To recap the precursors to PC Gamer that continued one another went in order: Game Player's MS-DOS Strategy Guide Game Player's PC Strategy Guide Game Player's PC Entertainment They continued one another in numbering. So in 1992 you'll see "Volume 5" of Game Player's PC Entertainment but in 1991 you'll see "Volume 4" of Game Player's PC Strategy Guide. Likewise "Volume 1" will be Game Player's MS-DOS Strategy Guide in 1988. So we should be advised when we're talking about one magazine we're talking about all three.
  14. Archive Dot Org. Yeah, it'll basically be impossible to get a complete listing since it's rare, but that doesn't stop me from scanning.
  15. They're next on my list. I'll post links to ADO as soon as they're ready. Right now I'm just experimenting with different ways of scanning them. Since they're stapled and I have an A3 scanner, I can scan each double sheet and get 100% of the page intact, but then I get some very cumbersome files. If I can just figure out how to automate all this, then they'll go a lot faster.

  18. Heheh, whoops. It appears in my late-night editing rush to get all the issues in I missed 36 entire pages from issue 83. I was wondering why that issue seemed so short. Scanning and editing now. Edit: Fixed. ADO link fixed as well. Next time you wonder how marktrade can scan so fast, ask yourself if all the pages are there.
