Ah, yeah the "legal" part never concerned me. I've been scanning copyright material for years now for translation.

I wonder how much their server farm costs for their web archive + internet archive files. They probably go through a few thousand terabytes a month.

But yeah, their process for uploading and managing stuff is antiquated and has annoyed me a few times. You can't even add items to collections unless you email them or upload it yourself to your own collection. I don't think you can message other users, either? I had that thought as soon as I posted and it doesn't seem like I can edit my post, so here's a doublepost for you.

I mean, it's the Internet Archive, which is probably some huge server farm with petabytes of hard drives. I've started uploading my scans there because it's pretty much guaranteed to be up 24/7. I haven't had any problems with them, but I don't think it's a good idea to limit where you upload your mags because that's like putting all your eggs in one basket. I'm thankful for them because up until now, I've been putting my scans on Nyaa torrents and another site. I don't mind if people reupload my scans, either, as long as credit is at least given. At the end of the day, we're here to share content, right? It's not like anyone here is making money off of it (hopefully).

I think OCR for clear Japanese text is pretty much a standard for all apps nowadays. It's not like we're trying to OCR scratchy handwriting. I just installed ABBYY 14, maybe they fixed the tsu issue by now lol. I think that one's impossible though unless it is programmed to recognize some bits of the language itself, like when the sokuon is used.

Regarding OCR, I use ABBYY Finereader. It's pretty accurate if you have clean high-res scans, escept for similar things like つ & っ. Google OCR might also work, haven't tried that for scans. If you have something you want me to try it with, lemme know.

Well, it saved that Shining Force book as a regular 72dpi in the same resolution, so I guess it was just a random fluke. The moral of the story is, avoid the JP2 conversions.

Anyone have any details or an archive on how exactly Archive.org's image conversion works (when it converts your upload into a JP2, etc). For example, this upload. The image extracted from the PDF (presumably the original upload) via Photoshop is 300 DPI with a height of 3025. But the JP2 conversion is 72dpi at 6050. On top of that, the scan data says 600dpi for some reason. Archive only converts the images if you upload a comic archive format (CBR/CBZ) it seems (my own .zip upload didn't get converted). I've been avoiding the converted JP2 files, but still, I wonder why the JP2 was upscaled? Have any of your uploads been messed up like that in their JP2 format? I was wondering about that, the first post is kitsune talking about his scans that don't belong on Retro, so I wasn't sure how much of the Archive uploads were his own scans.

I saw this exact scan uploaded elsewhere a week ago. Did you upload this elsewhere first? Just wondering. Also, Illbleed is a great little game. It could do with a remaster.

I might also start scanning some JP mags to help out. Have you done any research into which mags might hold more notable bits, like interviews, beta build screenshots, etc.? There are thousands of issues so I'd like to get the most bang for my buck (I'm not in Japan so I can't just walk down to Jimbocho and browse).

I'm aware of how much work it takes (I've scanned and edited 1,000+ books). I'm about to scan a Prima guide. There are dozens of different publications. I'm referring to old Japanese magazines. I don't know what their contents are, and it requires a lot of research. Couple that with collectors charging stupid prices, and I'm hesitant. I'm just wondering if someone can help me do research on which magazines I could focus on.

I wouldn't mind scanning JP guidebooks and older magazines myself either, however I'm hoping someone out there who's more motivated can do the research for me since I'm only sorta interested in it. I have lots of downtime + a good scanner, I just don't want to try and find old articles that list what a book might have. Is there a good resource for this somewhere or is it limited to hoping that Yahoo Auctions have a good description?

No reason not to if you want to scan them. I might scan the Perfect Dark JP guide.
