Sega was in the throes of financial trouble way before Dreamcast ever launched. They didn't bow out of the hardware market just because of MS entering, although it didn't help. I mean, the japanese CEO (I think that was what he was, he died shortly after) donated millions out of his own personal bank account to keep Sega afloat towards the last days of the Dreamcast. There are interviews with various Sega staffers that are now with other companies stating that if they could have hit the critical mass point of system sales they would have continued on supporting the system but couldn't reach that level. When I first heard about MS entering the gaming market with a system I really really thought they were going to buy Sega out and either continue on that legacy or phase it out completely but keep the internal dev teams, the two companies have been close since the Genesis days if I remember correctly (may have been the Saturn days on but I remember something about MS software in the Genesis library). Sega, I think, would have fared a lot better with the Saturn had they not brought out the 32X at all. I mean, that really tarnished their reputation in America. Sega CD was a neat add-on and had some actual good games on it and to most was a justified peripheral, if not a required purchase. The 32X was just a bad business venture from the get go with the Saturn coming up so soon afterward. As far as the other companies throwing in the towel a few years later, most of them were performing a hail mary attempt at system releases (Atari with the Jaguar and 3DO with the well, 3DO-had EA supported the system they help bring to market like a real hardware manufacturer, which they really weren't more than money, this could have been a contender longer). Had Matsushita stepped up to the plate and launched the M2 then we may have been playing the M4 right now, I really think they could have, with the right people in charge, have taken the gaming world by storm much like Sony did with the PSOne. Then again, it could have bombed big time as most that were in charge felt it would, therefore not releasing it in any form other than a couple of arcade games (Konami made one and Jaleco made one game each for the M2 arcade hardware, there were others but they escape me right now). Microsoft getting into handheld gaming could be one of many things, good or bad. I mean, come on, they have enough money to make it a success if they try it. What design do you think they would go with if they did try it? Looking at the Xbox series controllers, they are pretty close in design to Dreamcast controllers (Who really designed the Dreamcast anyhow? MS or Sega?). Would they go with a design from something Sega may have wanted to bring out? So far there have been three major handheld designs, like the PSP, GBA Original, Game Gear, Lynx and N-Gage where the screen is between the controls, #2 flip up style like the GBA SP and #3 flip style with the controls on the bottom with a second screen occupying the area between them. I am interested in seeing what they could come up with in a handheld. I would most certainly, almost positively, think about buying it.

Back in 1995 we had the following systems going at it, although not all in a successful manner: NES (some games were still being released) SNES Genesis Playstation Saturn 3DO Jaguar Amiga CD32 (I may be mistaken on this one, I have never seen on stateside in a store) Amiga CDTV Philips CDI 32X That is about a 11 way battle, 8 if you drop the Amiga offerings and the CDI (which never really was marketed as a gaming system). Microsoft has the money to do it if they wanted. I wonder what medium they would use for the games though?

triverse replied to Phillyman's topic in Retromags News
While pretty sparse as far as stuff that is made available here there are signs that it will be added as time permits: http://books.google.com/books?id=36IpAgAAC...+gaming+monthly http://books.google.com/books?id=9oHlGwAAC...=nintendo+power http://books.google.com/books?id=z7AfHQAAC...q=game+informer Wonder what is going to be offered up, is this going to be the full contents of the issues or is this going to just a table of contents type of offering? -
Nintendo Power #121 cover and poster (joined vertically) is on the server under the name: nintendopower121coverandposter.zip The poster in parts is available here if anyone wants to give it a shot at joining (I completely understand about the quality of mine as is the first one I joined). http://rapidshare.com/files/170724084/nint...rparts.zip.html

I know for sure that I can scan and upload issues 123 and 124 complete. I have issues 121 and 122 if you still need the covers and posters from them. I can try stitching the posters myself unless someone else would like to do it. I will I have some more issues, just have to find them (according to my list I have issues 117 through 124 complete- just not sure where they are in the milkcrates).

Hey Phillyman, did you receive the issue with D2 on the cover? invaliduserid sent me two Gamer's Republic issues, one of which I saw in the pics there (Ready to Rumble Boxing on the cover) and I just received them yesterday. I was going to scan them both for him if you didn't mind.

I read somewhere that they were having all kinds of problems getting the bugs out of the PS3 version of Fallout 3, not sure why though.

http://www.frugalreader.com/ http://titletrader.com/ http://www.whatsonmybookshelf.com/ Those are a couple of them, you basically list the books you wish to part with and people request them. You ship them out, usually earning one point (some things are worth more) and then use the points to request things from other members. Right now, they are pretty sparse on the Robotech stuff after the books 1-10, I need the last 10 or so books 11-20+.

Hey, Thor, have you checked out these trading sites? I got the complete first series, english dubbed like on tv, for the equivelant of 4 books that I won't read (I paid about $3 for the books at a used book store and then $4 in shipping for a total of about $7). Of course they are on VHS, but hey, I have a TV-in card, they will be on DVD soon enough. I have seen the sets on DVD go on ebay for about $20 and up, shipped so you may want to try that route. I remember buying those glue together model kits that were imported back when Robotech was on TV, fond memories. Another thing the first series taught me was to hate singing in cartoons (lyn min mei, shoot her, now...), ruined me for life at watching and enjoying most Disney movies.

Ok, I know that in some parts of the world that Robotech is called Macross and in Japan, parts 2 (New Generation) and 3 (Masters) are really a part of something else but were worked in with the first release in America. Let's focus on the first part of the US series, the one with Roy Fokker and Rick Hunter and Lisa Hayes. Let's see, first this series taught me that alien technology can be cool and outrageous. Second, it taught me that some aliens are hot (I believe her name was Mariya or something, she married Max Sterling later in the series). Anyone else have any good or bad memories of Robotech? I first saw it when I was about 10 years old and it was quite different seeing Roy and Claudia Grant in romantic situations, considering it was the mid 80's when it aired on the local Fox affiliate.

Gamefan Volume 3 Issue 3 March 1995 is uploaded and verified, ready for reading. I have gotten much better at the editing part of this (amazing what you can learn with GIMP when you just fiddle fart around, lol). Hope everyone enjoys it. It is a much much better quality release than my earlier Gamefans (pages are a lot more straight and aligned correctly, the overal blur is gone now and text is sharper). I plan to some day go back and redo the earlier releases I did in this better quality.

I would be willing to scan them for you and return them after getting done if you want. Just may take a bit of time to do it. Another member, TresHombres, shipped about 11 magazines to me, with signature verification by media mail (don't tell the post office that you are shipping magazines, tell them they are books) for about $7. Not bad considering the signature verification was around $2. I don't debind them, I have a flatbed scanner so the only damage done to your original copy is usually around the spine and sometimes a crease or two on the front and back cover will appear. I am sure there are other members that would be willing to scan for you too though, just having it on here I am sure people will volunteer.

I am not sure who to contact about this so here it is on the boards. I have a list of mags that I am trying to list on the WIP so that everyone can see what I have in relation to the others listing on the WIP and don't have permission to start a new category so could someone please create the following for me? I will add in my issues as I have time to do so. Thanks. Computer Gaming World Electronic Games Game Players Next Generation Life Cycle #2 Official Playstation Magazine Official Xbox Magazine PC Accelerator PC Gamer PC Games Playstation Extreme Playstation Monthly Silicon Magazine Surge Ultra Gameplayers Video Games (used to be VG&CE) Video Games and Computer Entertainment

I wonder if Phillyman would be willing to offer up some kind of incentive for the WIP like he is for the wiki, I mean, that would probably get someone to working on it. I agree, I like the WIP site, just don't have time to edit my area of it right now, that is part of the reason I am staying with Gamefan, seems to be a rarer item right now.

Not on the site yet, that I know of: Beyond The Nintendo Masters (By Hayden Books) EGM #108 Game Player Vol 1. #5 (Nove1989) and Vol 1. #6 Nintendo Power #114 SWAT Pro March 1994 On site with download available: EGM #73, 78, 80, 81, 84, 85, 86, 88, 92, 94,97, 105, 110 Game Pro December 1993 Unsure about: Sega Visions April 94 (I am pretty sure you have this one) This it? http://www.retromags.com/forums/Sega-Visio...18-file633.html Video Games (July 94 - Cover slightly worn) Hope that helps out. Check out the ones that have downloads available too, they may be a very worn copy and yours may be in much better condition so you could possibly scan it and release it too.

I understand about it being a chore to get everything sorted out and listed, it took me about 2 to 3 hours to get my list compiled and sorted (but now, if anyone wants to know what I don't have it is there). It is really the best way to let everyone know what you have and are willing to donate so they can offer any help they can. Thanks for preparing that list, it will help a lot.
-
I will ask around and see what I can find with some friends here that have quite a bit better Gamefan collection than I do (and their's are in unread condition in mylar protective sleeves, the whole 9 yards, like they are golden age comics or something).
-
Thank you for all the hard work meppi. It is greatly appreciated that you are working this hard to get the releases just right.

Unfortunately, you can't really go by the WIP site. Most users, like me, have too many things going on to find much time to go there and list what we have available, scanned and currently working on. Take my list on that site for example, it shows I have less than 10 issues total, in reality, I have over 160 issues spread over the various publications and years available as shown in this thread on the boards: http://www.retromags.com/forums/Mags-t3110.html I try and make sure that that list is updated with what is currently available from me so that people can see where I am at in the collection. There are others that maintain Work in Progress threads on the forums, so you may want to look at those too. I have tried to maintain my list on the WIP site and have only caused havoc over there, releases for Gamefan inexplicably ending up in the Gamepro section and such. Just not one of my interests. If anyone wants to take the time to put my list on there, then they can, I just don't plan on maintaining it there myself. A lot of users on here must feel similar since the list is so out of date. I would suggest making a list of the mags you have and posting it on the forums and asking for people to post what they plan on doing themselves and what they feel is needing a rescan. There are a bunch of EGM's that need to be redone if you have an issue in better condition than the one that is uploaded, not knocking the original scanner, you can only do so much to clean up a damaged issue (I understand completely because I have some majorly damaged issues myself that I am passing on for now). Are you just going to be throwing away the issues that are already uploaded? If so, please, post the list here and see if anyone is interested in taking them off of your hands. If no takers, please consider taking them to your local library and dropping them in that donation box for the troops, most take magazines too, some list them as not needed so just read their list there in case.

Thanks meppi. I plan on buying it when I cash my check and load one of those prepaid visa cards they have here now. Wish I had a better job, I would get the Valve pack as now I have a computer that can play those games.
-
Do you have to be connected to the internet to play games you buy from steam? I want to pick up a legit copy of Half Life 1 (I mean, come on, it is only $1). I have the beta for Dreamcast and like it a lot.
-
That is probably an impossibility to pinpoint the exact percentage, or even get in the ball park, of releases available on rapidshare. Honestly, look at meppi's rapidshare releases post and see what is up. Not trying to sound mean or anything but what is point of wanting to know that percentage so bad? Enjoy what is available

I can't speak for the mods here but I believe it is the 25 post requirement, which you have passed as your current, as of this post, reached 26 posts so you are, or should be, good to go.
-
I don't think the lack of posts replying with help is meant to be something bad, I mean, there is a high possibility that no one here has the issues you are looking for. It happens. Just hang in there though, someday someone may come along with those issues and scan them.
