I actually just called their customer service line and they said to go to www.gamepro.com/backissues. I went there and they only have issues up through 2003. So, I guess this doesn't even apply to us because this site requires issues > 5 years old.
-
I believe they technically do provide back issues, but the only reason I know this is because over the last few issues I have seen a 1-800 number on a page advertising back issues. HOWEVER, I also went to their website thinking that it would be nice to see exactly what is available. I was not able to find anything. I also found what Meppi found above. I also searched google for about 15 minutes. Again no information whatsoever. So I am not sure why they even have it in the mag. Seems it would be best to advertise it on their website. So they must not be very serious about making any money off back issues.

Also, it does technically say when downloading a magazine that you are supposed to own, or have at one time purchased the magazine. I know that in my case, I have had a GamePro subscription for since 1994, but I know that about 5% of the magazines that I once owned are either missing, trashed, or sitting somewhere at a friend's house. I have absolutely no regret or guilt downloading a magazine from >= 1994 because I know that I payed for a physical copy at one time. That being said, I wholeheartedly agree with meppi in that mags that are > 5 years old are basically just memories for the company that put them out. To be honest, most magazines older than a few months are almost worthless, as exhibited by the amount of mags you can get on ebay for under $10 including shipping. I recently just won an auction for about 13 mags for $7. None of the mags were older than 3 years.

You can send it to me. I will take care of scanning it. PM me and I will give you the details. I can even bump it up on my scanning queue so that after it gets here, I will do it next. -Noah

They could really make some money if magazines (the ones that still exist) wanted to re-release the old mags in a digital format. Heck, for all the work we put into scanning them, I would gladly pay a few $ per magazine. Considering it takes about 4 hours of scanning, editing, and putting together the info, that would be money well spent. -Noah

The site http://cgw.vintagegaming.org/ explains that it was an effort by the vintage gaming community to scan all of those magazines. At first I thought it was CGW that did the releasing, but it turns out that a CGW fan went on a collecting mission to get the first 100 magazines, then started scanning them. He eventually got the attention of CGW and not until the last few years have they been supportive. You can read about the process here: http://cgw.vintagegaming.org/columns/index...20170c015c2544d

That is one fantastic looking advertisement. Wish that had appeared in a magazine I had. Here is a direct link: http://freenet-homepage.de/sausehuhn/galer.../wipeout.ad.jpg -Noah

I have been using the numbering scheme on Magweasel's website for all my releases. Meaning the only GP releases that would need renumbering are Phillyman's. Not sure on the other release by clerk37. I have been using the format GamePro_Issue096_July_1997 for the CBR and GamePro_Issue096_July_1997 - 001 for the files, but I am open to creating a standard. http://www.magweasel.com/wiki/Gamepro (see bottom of linked page) -Noah

I agree with meppi. Being able to extract the jpegs without difficulty is great. I also think PDFs are a bit larger in MB size. Seems I remember way back checking that out before joining this site. My only wish was that the CBR was searchable, but that just gets complicated, so I will settle and be glad for just having hard copies.

Suggestion: Awards For Ads And Articles In Mags?

I like the idea. It would give people more incentive to check out the wikis and hopefully complete them. -
Any Interest In Old Pc Gamer Or Pc Games Mags?
kbf_private_joker replied to kbf_private_joker's topic in Help
I will hopefully scan 1 of those by the end of the weekend. -Noah -
Someone actually paid $510 for it. Wow.

I have only recently been added to the magazine release team as a scanner, but one thing that can be confusing is the status of issues. I know we only have 6 GamePro magazines scanned and edited, but figuring out what to scan next requires coming to the WIP section and scrolling through posts. The other option is to look through the other wiki pages, Acquired, Scanned, Release. These pages are great, but I would still have to walk through each one and look to see if an issue has been started. I put together a chart on the GamePro wiki page (http://www.retromags.com/wiki/index.php?title=Game_Pro_%28USA%29) that lists the issue and how far it is from being released. This might seem like overkill, but if we had 10 people contributing GamePros and they all had WIP pages, I can guarantee that someone would re-scan something already in progress or released. It also eliminates having to look at the WIP page, provided scanners/editors/distributors can update this page. The chart also allows us to see if what issues none of us have (the "We Have" column). There is probably a better name for that, but I didn't want to take up much space. I would like some feedback as to whether people like this idea or have a better idea. For me, having everything in one place is very convenient. I guess if nobody else uses it, I can at least update it with all the GamePro information Thanks, Noah

Kbf_private_joker's Progress

July 1997 is next on my todo list. Hopefully I can get it up today or by tomorrow. Edit: July 1997 has been uploaded to FTP. -
Ok, I will continue to use contrast/brightness boost. I agree that macros are the way to go (called actions in PS CS2). The only thing you can't macro is the re-alignment (it is too subjective). Hopefully, with practice, I can eyeball them immediately after scanning them and if slightly off, just rescan it. That way, I can use a macro at the end that does brightness/contrast, resize to 1280, and saves to JPEG level 9. Then I can run the macro as a batch and I can step away for 10 min and they will all be done Thanks for the input, Noah

I read in one of 420's old posts that a contrast/brightness boost is useful, but then recently heard from others it depends on the scanner. So I re-scanned a cover, one with brightness/contrast boost and one without. I would like people's opinion on it so that I can be correct from now on. With contrast/brightness boost of 20 in PS CS2 Without contrast/brightness boost

The guy ran for governor out here in CA in 2003. http://politicalhumor.about.com/library/im...garycoleman.htm But then again, so did 15,000 other people. -Noah

Kbf_private_joker's Progress
kbf_private_joker replied to kbf_private_joker's topic in Magazine Talk
I am using HP 5590 scanner. It is a shame the auto feeder puts green streaks on the pages, even after getting a new clear plastic guider. What I will do next time is scan a few sample pages with and without contrast/brightness boost and everyone can give me feedback. Also, the GamePro was 205 pages (what a marathon for my first one). So about 900Kb to 1MB per page. Let me know how the uploaded pages turned out. They are in the new folder under GamePro on the editor's ftp folder. Over the weekend, I would like to do 2 more. Phillyman, unless you have an objection, I would like to just start with my oldest issue that you don't yet have scanned and just work my way up. Unless you have a better idea. The missing mags that you don't have aren't going anywhere, so I don't see the hurry in getting them scanned first. I mainly wanted to get a missing one scanned to qualify for a 1 year premium membership. So, you can cross off November 1996 from the home page Also, does this allow me access to the download FTP. I am curious as to how the other GamePro scans look. Thanks guys, Noah -
I have created the table on the main page. I also created the 1989 index page. As far as creating the detail pages, do we have a set format for that? Also, where would I get the cover thumbnails and how do I go about linking to them on the wiki detail pages? I can continue tomorrow on this if I get some free time. -Noah

Kbf_private_joker's Progress
kbf_private_joker replied to kbf_private_joker's topic in Magazine Talk
I have completed issue #98. The following is the cover: Not sure if the image tag will work I did all the post-processing and let me tell you, getting a perfect alignment is a real pain. If this first issue isn't up to the standards, I still have the pages and can re-scan. I did a slight re-alignment on about 30% of the pages. Only seems to happen on one side (I simply flip when doing the reverse side). It is probably the side that is cut. I started at 300dpi, then did any realignment that was needed, then did contrast/brightness boost, then resize to 150dpi (I wasn't aware of the 1280 pixel size). Then finally I saved at JPEG level 10. The final CBR turned out to be around 200MB. Also, not sure where finished releases are uploaded. By the way, that isn't my cover as I am still at work and don't have the scans with me. -Noah -
Anyone who likes GH games even a little needs to download and play around with Frets on Fire http://fretsonfire.sourceforge.net/. It is a Guitar Hero-like game for the PC with TONS of mods and has almost every song imaginable available for it if you can do a little googling. You can also rip the PS2 disc using a DVD ROM and put the songs in the game. The only catch is that you need a PS2 to USB adapter. I got 2 of them for under $10 on ebay. You can find more here http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?s...earch&fgtp= It is a dream for anyone who likes GH and wants more flexibility/music/options. Very addicting!!! -Noah

Is there a reason there is no information in the GamePro wiki? I can help add information because I plan on scanning my old GamePro mags. -Noah

I have about 1 year's worth of both of these magazines from 1999 - 2000. I woudl be happy to scan them if there is interest. -Noah

I have been messaging Phillyman back and forth and agreed to help him scan GamePro magazines, since I have 95% of them since 1995. I will log my progress in this forum. I will probably scan 1 and then ask someone to critique it to make sure it is in the correct format. -Noah
