  1. What type of theatre system do you have? Eventually, I'll have a house (and more disposable cash...hopefully), so this is of some interest to me. For me, if I want to listen at high quality, I use my Grados SR80 headphones. I couldn't justify spending $5K to listen to music on a high end system, especially since I listen at home on the pc speakers about 1-2 hours a week tops. However, I was able to justify spending $90 last year. Made a big enough difference to me. Not to say I know what you can hear either, but every study I have read shows that even experts can't tell the difference between WAV and mp3s as low as 224. If experts can't tell, I don't feel too bad about using 320 CBR
  2. Please post the Ebay link when you put it up. I'd be curious to see what something like that will fetch.
  3. All good discussion. The more that gets us in the community discussing, the more ways we can improve the site and our project. The reason most people use JPEG for images is the same reason that everyone uses MP3. They have both been accepted by 99% of people as a media format and are unlikely to go away anytime soon. Also, people in general are happy to consume compressed media because most can't tell the difference and if they can, it is acceptable enough for them to tolerate. I watch tv episodes on hulu and youtube because it is convenient and fast and just works well. As far as MP3 vs lossless: 1. Most people (probably 99.9%) can't tell the difference between 320 CBR and flac if encoded correctly 2. Most media players don't play lossless formats except for WAV 3. If there is a noticeable difference, most people aren't willing to spend thousands on a receiver + speakers to hear it. I listen to most music on headphones and a Creative Zen player. I can notice a difference when I use nice headphones, but the earbuds are just more convenient. Also, the reason the files are in a CBR (essentially a RAR container) is not for compression, but so that it can be read as a single file in the comic book readers. Even if it isn't necessary, it's convenient to have a single file represent an entire mag.
  4. I think we are talking about 2 different things. I understand that the CBR/CBZ format is just a container for the JPEGs. I was interested in Thor's Ipod Touch CBR reader find and was wondering how it worked. If it's this one, http://www.bitolithic.com/ComicZeal/comiczeal.htm, it looks like it creates a special format the makes the files load faster. I'll have to try it out when I have some time this week.
  5. Thor, is this the reader you were talking about? http://www.bitolithic.com/ComicZeal/comiczeal.htm Looks interesting.
  6. Your software project sounds interesting and you make some valid points about switching to BMP. I think the main reason we use JPEG is: 1. It creates smaller CBR files 2. Managing 200 BMP files on a hard drive before uploading is a real pain 3. It's good enough for most of us, especially when the scans have a width of 1600, which presents an incredible amount of detail 4. Scanners have been using JPEG for years and our photoshop templates are tweaked for optimum viewing pleasure 5. I also think most comic book readers require JPG inside the CBR files, which is essentially just a container for the files because JPEGs are already compressed heavily. If I'm wrong, please correct me
  7. Post a reply giving your review. Also, will it display files on the Ipod touch or do you have to open them in a web page? I saw some PDF readers out there for the Ipod touch, but it could only open a file off a website, which is pretty limiting.
  8. http://orioto.deviantart.com/gallery/#Videogame-Remakes Anyone looking for video game themed wallpaper for the desktop look no further. Imagine if the video games themselves looked that good
  9. Not sure the cops were needed. Just call her parents and send her home. Then give her a 3 day suspension. She was ignoring the teacher's request to stop texting in class. Of course I did go to school in CA, so things might be a tad different here.
  10. You can get what I have off the GamePro WIP pages. I believe everything after 1997 I also have even though I haven't entered them in that system.
  11. I wholeheartedly agree. No point tackling other stuff if the Wiki is in disarray. Setting some standards helps to keep things consistent and make fast work. Once that is established, I can tackle uploading covers for all the GamePros, even the ones we don't yet have. Are there rules about using covers from Magweasel? Did he give us permission? It would be cool to have a complete set of GamePro covers.
  12. Maybe we should tackle 1 issue at a time instead of this brain dump of information By the way, I think the wiki is customizable or at least it should be. However, I think the first thing to address is getting it updated. A pretty, disfunctional wiki is pretty pointless. Edit: I think I might put in some covers and update it with what we have so far for GamePro. It looks pretty pathetic in that it only has about 6 issues in it :(
  13. Sorry but I may be a little slow, but is the idea to move away from the download pages and have the wiki as the source of obtaining magazines. I like the idea of using the wiki, as long as people keep it updated. I started using it about 1.5 years ago, but then realized nobody else updated it so I wasn't either. If we can "urge" people to keep it updated, that would be great.
  14. Lots to discuss today I won't list the numbers from above because I didn't want to make this too long. I will list things so that the things I feel strongly about go first. 1. I really, really, really like it when scans are cleaned up before being released. I am kinda a perfectionist and spend about 4-5 hours per scan. When I first started there were different types of workers here, scanners, editors, and releasers. I honestly don't believe a magazine should even be released unless it has been fully straightened out and cropped properly so the scanner bed isn't showing. I think we have made it too easy to upload stuff. It sounds ironic, yes, I know. Maybe we need to have a system whereby there are 2 places to upload, "Unedited" and "Edited". I downloaded some GamePros the other day and they weren't crooked and not cropped. I imagine this person probably spent 1 hour scanning a magazine and immediately uploaded it. We may have to institute some type of system whereby a magazine has to be "approved" before it can be released to the public. I also believe that some people may have been turned off from this site after downloading a few sub-par magazines. 2. I am guilty of suggesting the WIP pages. I apologize for having it be too complicated. The reason I suggested it was because I was tired of looking at 10 different WIP threads before figuring out what needed to be scanned. If people will use the Wiki, awesome. It makes life easier. My biggest complaint was that the system was not centralized. Everything else I agree with Philly
  15. How many do you think you can complete per month? Also, if you figure out how much it would be, that would be awesome. We'll chat and figure out which issues. Maybe I can send you 10 as a start for now. I would love the help.
  16. Quick note for Meppi or Philly. It says GamePro 001-184, but I submitted September 1999 the other day and it was 122. Seems it should be 125 instead (http://magweasel.com/wiki/GamePro_December_1999)
  17. In light of all the recent "discussion" about disposing of magazines, this does bring up a good point. Our community has expanded and I know there are lots of people who have claimed to want to scan but didn't have anything to scan. Maybe we could create some type of system that allows people like me (with over 75-100 pre-2000 magazines to scan) to mail them to someone who has none and is sitting idle with a scanner. WOOHOO! MY 100TH POST
  18. It is a bit unfortunate that noone uses the WIP list because it is a central place where people can see what other people are working on. The other unfortunate thing is that when there are 2 or more people that have the same magazines, it usually happens at least once that they end up scanning the same magazine and one person ends up being really bummed because of spending 4 hours for nothing. I know that when I first started, I got tired of always trying to figure out what everyone else had and what they were scanning at the time. That was the main reason for setting up the WIP section. I know it does take a long time to set up, but it has been well worth it for me and a few other members.
  19. Go here: www.retromags.com/wip The post here explains it in detail: http://www.retromags.com/forums/Magazine-P...stem-t2755.html It hasn't been kept up as well as it should, but it does provide an easy way of figuring out what is needed and who is doing what.
  20. That sounds like an adequate workout, as long as you are also minding the calories. I wish you luck. My wife is also trying to drop the weight and it is rough and slow going. You should post your weekly progress here so we can cheer you on
  21. How much weight do you want to lose and in what amount of time? It sounds simplistic, but all you really need to do is about 1 hour of cardio a day. Go to the gym and use the eliptical or exercise bike for 1 hour. Take an Ipod, it'll make the time go by faster. You can probably lose 1-2 lbs a week doing that. The workout plan that trainer had you on is like the ones from "The Biggest Loser". I guess if you want to lose 3-4 lbs a week, that's the way to do it. Oh, also, only drinking water can make a huge difference. Things like Starbucks and Sodas will blow out your calories for the day. Forgot to mention that losing weight is about 80% diet and 20% exercise. Calorie counting seems to work wonders for most people. They can eat whatever they want as long as they don't exceed the calories for the day.
  22. I've always been a fan of Sierra games. Thanks for the link!
  23. Congrats Meppi! You are one of the main reasons this site has been so successful over the years.
  24. Triverse, if you have some time, please add those magazines to the WIP system. You can set up the account at www.retromags.com/wip. This way other site members know what you have and we can easily see (without having to visit this thread) what we do and don't need to obtain. If you don't have time, let me know and I can add the magazines to the WIP system for you. Seeing some of those early GamePros is exciting. Feel free (if you don't have time), to bundle those up to me and I can assist with getting early GamePros uploaded. Thanks!
  25. This may be a question already answered, but have you talked to the site developers and asked if there is a way to not allow more than 1 account created from the same IP? Seems like that is the root problem.
