  1. That error is caused by Rapidcrap altering the way they link files. The old method no longer works. As they are now going to be charging an exorbitant 50 Euros a month from May I cannot see Phillyman continuing to use their service so I don't think the link will get fixed anytime soon. I wonder why he hasn't FileFactory linked it yet? Maybe it's a raw scan and he doesn't want to rehost until it's cleaned up? Only he can answer that.
  2. It involves the type of plastic used when manufacturing during that period. Amiga and Atari computers are affected by it the same way. Do a search for "Retrobrite", a concoction that when used changes the plastic and restores it back to the original colour. You just need to ensure it is created at a level where the plastic isn't affected by brittleness afterwards.
  3. Well, given the possibility of them not hanging around with the way they have been going lately something for your sub is better than nothing right?
  4. You just want it because of Lara Croft's ti..... Oh man ...so do I
  5. They were published by New England Publications Inc. according to the mag itself. Definitely USA origin. No idea how many issues may have been created. I have 20 and I got them off an archive site where the original scanner said he was happy for other sites to host them to prevent their loss if that site ever went down. That was all they had but they didn't say whether it was a complete collection or not.
  6. Holy crap!!! I found the Color Computer Magazine issues 1-11 that I converted/cleaned up. I thought I had lost them but I was trawling through a 2.5" portable HDD I found in the basement and there they are. Uploading them as PDF's as I am in the middle of a site update at present.
  7. Uploading Analog 1-12 at present and converting the others over as I write this. STart 41/42 will follow
  8. Not necessarily. In New Zealand the news agents generally just sent the covers or part of the covers back and the rest ends up in recycling. That or Chinese take away shops
  9. Interesting question. The answer is it depends on the publisher in question. Newsfield, producers of Zzap!64 etc didn't from what I can tell and so it was quite a relief when they allowed their works to be released by sites like OoPA etc. That or they may have had backups but when they folded Europress who acquired their IP may have junked their stored issues thinking they would never be able to make money of such old products. By the feel of it the older the company the less likelihood of having backup copies. Newer releases should in theory be fine. Atomic:MPC for instance had all the physical masters stored and issues 1 - 50 were converted and released on DVD compilation discs. Even then though things can go wrong as they had some sort of issue (fire or water damage) and lost all the advertising content pages for the first 13 issues. You need to quantify 'magazines going under' a little more explicitly. Future PLC discontinue magazines all over the place (NGamer, PSM3, Xbox World etc) for various reasons .... not selling enough, too many similar titles in their own stable .... yet they remain in business therefore they would have no reason to sell off their IP in relation to those discontinued titles. They could do but I have never heard of them doing that. If Future PLC the company were to go under however, THAT is a different story. The receivers would likely be looking to sell off any and all IP to recoup potential losses etc. Whether they still have backups of titles like Amstrad Action is the big question.
  10. E-Day - As you have Analog in .CBR I'd suggest you start uploading those issues (20-79) and I'll convert issues 1-19 to .CBR along with BLIP/STart and then upload those. Given the site only really wants .CBR it seems like extra work for Phillyman to upload .PDF's
  11. I have all the Analog Computing issues, the two Blip and STart issues but all only in PDF. I also provided the Color Computer issues but lost them in a HDD crash unfortunately as I never backed them up onto my NAS prior to my working drive bellying up on me.
  12. I get Retro Gamer on my iPad via Pixelmags Readr application. I pay $13NZ per month and get to read all that mags back issues along with the latest of Hyper, PC Powerplay, X-360 (now renamed X-One), Play tm and Games tm. Add to that Custom PC and several other titles and it's a decent amount of reading for one small monthly fee. The print version of Retro Gamer is $23NZ per month by itself so it's a good deal where I am. For that price I am happy to give print copies the cold shoulder. That's also why I debind my mags when I scan them. So I can chuck them in the recycling bin.
  13. Sounds like a good reason for scanning more EGM issues
  14. Seriously, only $40 less than a 3DS with the clamshell screen protection/smaller form factor. And soooo ugly .... ugh!!! If that's Nintendo's answer to waning sales then they are in trouble.
  15. How about: Q. Activision released games like Battlezone/ Battlezone II to universal acclaim from reviewers yet they both become known as some of the best games never played. Do you think marketing was the cause of their sales problems or was it the nature of the games themselves? Do you think the sales results have made Activision more hesitant towards producing non-mainstream game types as a result? Q. Companies like Future PLC release digital magazine content which customers pay for only to later drop the magazine and state that if you require to reset your iPad the app may no longer be available and any content a person has paid for may be lost. Doesn't it seem like, as per any other DRM based media that the paying consumer is being treated worse than people obtaining content illegally? Q. Do you think that there should be some onus on companies closing down digital magazines to do the right thing by their customers to ensure they can continue to retain items they have purchased? Q. Will there ever be a Battlezone III?
  16. Dunno why you changed the RAM as the previous kit seemed perfectly fine to me. The Corsair PSU was fine for a single GPU setup but I thought a little low spec for SLI but if you never intend going down that path changing it was probably unnecessary. My setup is i5-3570K Asus P8B75-M Pro (SLI capable @ x8) 16GB RAM .... pretty ordinary RAM as I personally don't see much point paying a premium for better RAM) Asus Geforce GTX660Ti FSP Aurum 750w Gold PSU 128GB SSD (Boot) 1TB HDD (Installed Apps/Games & temp storage) 16TB of HDD storage for movies, TV, Game Roms etc (2 x 4TB,1 x 3TB & assorted smaller drives) 3 x Dell Ultrasharp U2412M monitors (1920 x 1200 16:10) ... so similar to your new PC. I do find three monitors is fantastic for watching a movie while editing in Paintshop Pro and having explorer open all at the same time so if you have a video card that supports three-way and a big enough desk then think about getting another monitor. Definitely make sure all the monitors are identical if possible. I used to use different monitors and the bezel/height differences were flippin' annoying
  17. Yeah ... but a bronze certified power supply? I personally would want to run SLI on that. 48" of screen? What is that? Dual 24" monitors? 1 x 48" TV? My recommendation is if you are into PC gaming and it is dual 24" monitors consider going to three 24" as triple screen gaming is stunning for racing sims. I have NFS Hot Pursuit on the Xbox 360 and my PC and I have never gone back to the Xbox 360 version after playing it on my PC with three monitors. Amazing!! I have to say I tried Aliens vs Predator and after a while felt seasick so some games are better suited than others. If you are primarily looking at non-gaming and want real estate for having multiple windows open then the above still applies. If you are heavily into watching movies on your PC, play games but don't have the desk space for a triple monitor setup you could look at a Dell U2913WM or AOC Q2963Pm 21:9 monitor. With a resolution of 2560 x 1080 these look great for playback of movies with little to no black borders or having two webpages open side by side. Philips released a TV in this format iirc but for some reason it hasn't taken on which I find somewhat strange considering the number of 2.35:1 movies out there but it has now been discontinued due to a lack of demand.
  18. Why the heck would you want to pay for an overpriced Mac is beyond me? I guess if you don't play games on your PC or use esoteric software simply not found on the Apple platform it might be something to think about but at the same time forget about upgrades over time. It's a buy once box unlike a PC where you can throw in a new mainboard/CPU as new tech becomes available or you need more GPU power etc. If I ever wanted to go back to using a mini-PC for a TV media player box I'd certainly look hard at the Mac Mini. Load up XBMC, use a windows remote and it makes for a quiet, potent little streamer.
  19. I love how some people are quick to tell scanners what to use/not use when they most often contribute pretty much nothing to the preservation cause themselves other than leeching and/or generally moaning. Just because you don't need the features it supports doesn't mean they have no validity. The fact that you personally don't have a liking for a format that has extra features/abilities probably says more about you or your experiences than the format itself. The guys running the show here prefer cbr/cbz ..... fair enough. That's their choice. Over at OGM I prefer PDF. That's my choice too and it's one of the reasons I no longer contribute here. But I don't go around making asinine comments because of their choices. And seriously ... *nix? Who the frak wants to use that on a home PC anyway? It's a server oriented OS with a GUI added on as an afterthought and which should best be left to internet servers etc where it belongs. It only came about because some people were too cheap-ass and didn't want to pay for an OS just like the people moaning about PDF applications being to costly. LOL
  20. Well ... everyone who moaned about their used game policy/always on internet setup can pat themselves on the back for making Microsoft see their design decision for what it was. It also means that users will be able to enjoy their purchases long after the console has been superseded rather than becoming useless when it is no longer supported. Horsepower considerations aside the value proposition swings back to a more even keel now meaning the PS4 has less of an advantage than it did prior to the policy backtrack.
  21. And that's their problem. They knew the new competing consoles were not far behind, more powerful and arguably better value for money if you factor in Blu-ray support etc and yet they haven't stepped up and delivered games before the new consoles arrive to at least give themselves a chance of competing. I like the Wii and I have been a fan of Nintendo since the N64 (I bypassed the PSX completely in favor of the N64) but the Wii U has left me underwhelmed to be honest. I hope it doesn't break them but they do have their handheld division to fall back on and which has done them well even with the 3DS slow start .... again ...
  22. NZ pricing as at last weekend. Now the local retailer JBHifi have the 3D/2D version for $25 and the 2D only version for $20 until the 19th June. That's much more palatable so I might grab the 3D/2D version seeing as I have 3D home theatres even if I don't have a 3D TV yet.
  23. I don't want to pay $43 for the theatrical edition now when the extended edition is due in December. If the reviews say the extended edition doesn't add anything the theatrical edition will have dropped to $20 by then anyway so I win either way by waiting until then. "That my lads .... was a Dragon" ..... epic
