  1. I don't want to pay $43 for the theatrical edition now when the extended edition is due in December. If the reviews say the extended edition doesn't add anything the theatrical edition will have dropped to $20 by then anyway so I win either way by waiting until then. "That my lads .... was a Dragon" ..... epic
  2. That's good then. Little Inferno and Assassin's Creed are available on other devices however so you couldn't really put them in the same basket as Nintendo created content, or that the Wii U offers a more compelling platform to play them than another console/PC etc. Don't get me wrong, I have a Wii myself, but to be honest it hasn't been turned on in over two years now so I see nothing in the current or incoming titles that tells me I NEED to buy a Wii U. The 3DS is a whole different story as it can play NDS titles which gives it a huge backlog of content that can be played. Nintendo own the handheld gaming space. Sony's efforts may be technically great but content hasn't materialized like it has on the NDS. I have one of the older NDS consoles and my daughter uses it for Pokémon. Ugh!!! But I bought it purely for Mario Kart DS which is brilliant and Super Mario 64 DS is also pretty nice. And that's the problem I have with the Wii U. The games I like can be played on the bus or in the car with the NDS so I'd rather put money on upgrading to the 3DS XL than on a Wii U.
  3. Really? There's only one game worth owning and that's Super Mario Bros U as far I am concerned. That's an expensive game if you factor the console cost into it. Nintendo really dropped the ball where the Wii U is concerned. It needed a high profile game like Mario Kart at the very least on day one but there's still no sign of tier one games being available any time soon. In my books the last decent console they made was the N64. Everything else has been repeats although Mario Galaxy on Wii far and away beats Mario Sunshine. Add to that the negativity by 3rd party developers and it doesn't bode well for the longer term when you factor the PS4 into it. Come Xmas time the sales numbers may tell an interesting story.
  4. I am also hanging out for the Extended edition of The Hobbit to arrive around the same time as this comes out in cinemas. I found the LoTR extended editions to be much better than the theatrical releases and expect the same for the Hobbit movies.
  5. The crap DRM around second hand games sales is a killer for me on the games side of things. That leaves it as a Blu-ray player and I have two home theatre systems that do 3D Blu-ray so that advantage is also negated. Then there is likely to be the limited codec support as per the X-360 where it cannot play most formats including MKV which my home theatre units can no problems at all which doesn't even make it a worthwhile media centre purchase. My view of it is potentially nice hardware and concept .... shit treatment of users = STAY AWAY Sony have come out and said no mucking around re second hand game sales etc and no always on required to play disc based games so IF they stick to that ... and it's a big IF when you look at the PS2 Linux fiasco ... then it looks a better bet as far as gaming goes. I'd be waiting for a while though to see whether broken promises are the norm with either device.
  6. I will bypass both consoles and stick with the PC unless something remarkable mandates purchasing a new console but I have to say I view Microsoft's draconian DRM moves around games, second hand sales, always on or games won't play etc as a massive incentive to go PS4 IF I ever felt inclined to get a new console. The price is a wash due to the fact you have to buy the Move camera separately which negates almost all the price differential.
  7. Our $ = 84c US so they're asking $17US equivalent. In all fairness they charge $22 for Retro Gamer hence my paying for the Pixelmag's Readr application on the iPad where I get that and a whole heap more for $13NZ per month.
  8. I always find it amusing when someone dredges up a four year old thread. Seriously though, some people prefer PDF's as they can incorporate things like bookmarks, indexes etc if you choose to create them that way or they can incorporate OCR'd text but they require a 3rd party program to create them while others prefer CBR/CBZ because they are just a renamed rar/zip file with makes them easy to create by anyone with half a brain but you can't do anything fancy with them at all. Different strokes .....
  9. Just saw an issue on a newsstand over here in Kiwi-Land. Couldn't quite believe my eyes but it's likely it wasn't a current issue as we always seem to be a month or two behind over here due to surface shipping. The price stopped my buying it. $20 for one magazine? Pfft .... no way ....
  10. Yeah .... seen that over at my site because I was putting up too much Nintendo or Amiga content. Trying to hold a rational conversation with someone who at the end of the day is just a total prick tends to make one sink to their level in frustration. Now I simply delete crap like that. If it isn't polite conversation or positive comments/ feedback I don't want to know about it. I don't have a problem with people saying there is something wrong with a magazine scan or whatever but "you Australian Cunt" or "get a move on you freggin' Kiwi" aren't remotely constructive. At the end of the day site owners etc put up what they want, when they want ... end of story. Bitching about it certainly doesn't encourage you to go faster etc.
  11. If they change the name of the magazine I just keep it in a separate page but make a comment in both pages so people know. But that's me just being simplistic/minimalist
  12. Hehe ..... don't start with that. I am going to have a whole heap of spare time on my hands soon enough. Never wake a sleeping bear. Okay well, I might be the size of a bear but ......
  13. I don't like to advertise the competition on another site
  14. Well .... personally I think OldGameMags is a better source of UK and Australian magazines .... but then I am somewhat biased
  15. I would rather pay for a seed-box and host my content that way if I knew how to create a private tracker and I wasn't losing my job.
  16. Well .... they (Rapidshare) originally were excellent and they are the ONLY cyber-locker that has been around since the beginning. The rest have disappeared (Filesonic, Fileserve & others) or been taken down (Megaupload) so you have to give them kudos for simply surviving. I agree though that they have been getting a tad restrictive of late what with instituting usage limits (50GB per day) on accounts and more recently storage size limits (250GB per account) but when you compare them to the latest crop of iCloud services they still hold their own. Will MEGA last a year let alone two or more? Hard to tell. There's the legal battle over extradition of Kim Dotcom going on at present and I am sure the Feds and RIAA/MPAA legal teams are trying to find a way to take his latest creation down as we speak. Then there's the 50GB per free account limit and the fact if you want more you are dropping money down on a service with no history and which is just as expensive or more so that Rapidshare.
  17. Do you think it might be better to tackle things in smaller pieces. I mean the video game database sounds nice and all but maybe that should be a secondary priority to the magazine database? Something that can be added later once things have got back up and running on the magazine front? The whole newsgroup thing really doesn't do much for me I have to say. I'd rather pay for a seed-box and host mags via a private tracker than frig around with split files on an archaic system but hey ... different strokes I guess. Still, who am I to judge in that regard. I am about to lose my job and I likely won't be able to afford Rapidshare hosting when it is time to renew next month so my site links will go down after that. I'll put up what I can as a free user on MEGA but with 1000+ mags totaling 146GB's on Rapidshare it will come down to having to be choosy about which files to host in the 50GB free user allotment on MEGA. That's why I haven't bothered hosting this sites EGM and GamePro's after people here asked after them. They'll only be up for a couple of weeks then gone again.
  18. There are some files available but there are a lot that are no longer available as well. I don't particularly care whether RM or RM 2.0 lives or dies to be honest as I run my own website now. And before someone here who hasn't been around that long decides to bleat off that I am just another detractor/moaner go do your homework. I have contributed dozens of magazines to the site and I donated to RM 2.0 even though as I said before, I have my own website to run. I'll say it again .... there are valid questions like what is the status of RM 2.0, when will an official site file-hosting solution be available and mags back online as before? Note that I am not throwing a hissy fit like the others. I do understand that this is a hobby. But I believe Phillyman has been remiss on keeping people up to date on what is going on around here. Does he want those people who donated feeling like they might have given their money into a black hole? I don't think he would rip people off for a minute but impressions are derived from what people see and hear and there's sweet naught of that happening at the present time.
  19. All good E-Day.When and if you want to make them available I am happy to put mags up on my site. I haven't put all the EGM and GamePro's back up as I am not sure if I can afford to pay for the Rapidshare account to be extended when my job is up in the air at the present time. However, while people around are merely visitors who just want to hit and run and never make any positive contribution to the site as a whole there are valid points in the questions raised here. I for one am interested in knowing how things are progressing and if you were to be honest about it, it takes bugger all time for Phillyman to post an update when you consider he is down as visiting the site today. I do not have an issue with people having a life outside of our hobby but as a contributor I am interested in seeing some sort of update posted given I donated money to RM 2.0.
  20. I hear you. I try and scan at least two or three magazines a week for my website for which I paid everything to run and host it. In the entire time I have received a sum total of two donations. sputnik and dan contributed the entire NGC Magazine collection between them and Mattedge1 provided a pile of Edge magazines and that's it. I have now scanned and made available 45 issues of NGC and several issues of Edge magazine so I think I've kept my side of the bargain when it comes to justifying their faith in providing the magazines for preservation. And I will get them finished too even though I am soon to be out of a job and won't be in a position to renew my Rapidshare account. I'll shift to MEGA and make sure those mags are available even if nothing else due to the small share size for free members. It's what you do when you accept donations .... anything to make sure the donators are not disadvantaged through their contributing.
  21. Yep. Couldn't agree more ...... This site is dead in its current guise when nothing much is available The new site is M.I.A Phillyman is M.I.A Phillyman doesn't want to host off Rapidshare because of the 50GB per day limit Really? .... 50GB per day is better than the zero here at present right? E-Day has new GamePro issues but nowhere to host them. WTF? Has anyone even received their mags from Phillyman for donating to the new site? These are all questions that most visitors and even members of the site are wanting answers for but most are too scared to actually come out and say it. Everyone has personal lives etc and we all get that but when you run a site AND take peoples money there is a certain expectation placed upon you to deliver in one form or another. In the mean time you can grab a few mags off my website at http://www.oldgamemags.com to tide you over until something happens over here. @ E-Day - If you want to host your files over at OGM let me know. At least people will be able to get them that way and I'll happily credit you for their creation etc. Kiwi
  22. Yeah. Pretty much any 1980's magazine for home computers had type-in listings because in many cases they were released at the time as the computers were introduced and there was a distinct lack of software in the first few months. Amstrad users like myself took to typing in listings at the start because there were less than a dozen commercial games available at launch so it became a way to flesh out the collection. Of course that assumed you typed it in correctly or worse, they presented working listings in the first place. Oh man ... they were the days .....
  23. For what computer systems? Computer Gamer & CVG have type-in's for Spectrum, BBC, Amstrad CPC, C-16, C-64 etc. and most old UK magazines that are model specific, eg, Amstrad Action, Sinclair User also have listings. As far as USA mags go RUN and Compute!'s Gazette cover Commodore computers. I have several mags dedicated to type-in listings for Acorn and Spectrum but haven't scanned them given they are fairly esoteric and no-one has asked about them.
  24. Look at it this way. 90% of the people who frequent this site are after or into console based magazines rather than older computer gaming. If any of the scanners around here had Nintendo mags you can bet they would already have been up here by now given the volume of Nintendo Power, EGM and other mags already here. That they aren't is a reflection of the demographic for the site. Most people here are USA/Canada based so don't have access to UK mags. Same goes for Australian and New Zealand residents where in a lot of cases the publisher released area specific versions of the magazines. NMS is one of those where an AUS/NZ version was released rather than shipping over UK versions. Then there are magazines like Nintendo Official Magazine where they did the same but no-one must like them or something because there are almost no scans available whatsoever. You will get answers to your questions and they are likely to be more polite if you don't go telling people they are lazy.
