Finally finished Ahoy! Issue 01. By request, up next is Issue 01 of Computer Fun (April 1984). Update 04/29/09, 12:30am: Scanning & Editing completed. Mag has been uploaded.

I have issues 120 through 126 (they are from 1999). I just quickly looked through them and didn't see a "Your Screen Test Captions" section. I would think this would be in the beginning of the magazine in or near the "Player's Pulse" section as everything from page 20 on was just walk-throughs and reviews. Later issues may have had a different layout though.

I did try using the White Balance filter but unfortunately it didn't work well for most pages because they had an Ad or some other part of the page that was very white so it didn't correct the problem areas. Next time I scan it (probably this week) I'll throw a page up here so you can see what I mean.

This sucker is proving to be a challenge. I've scanned it twice now and was unhappy with the results both times... Maybe I'm just expecting too much - the mag has aged a lot and the paper they used is "woody" (for lack of a better word, but it has a grain to it). Also, a lot of the pages are very yellow and I've been trying different colored backgrounds behind the pages to get the best scan I can.

I got a free subscription to Nintendo Power when I preordered Zelda: OoT. I just checked the issues, which started at Issue 115 (Dec 98) and ended at Issue 126 (Nov 99), and none of them had it. Issue 115 through 118 had a walk-through for OoT but there were no posters that I could find.

I'm going to take a quick break on scanning Nintendo Player's Guides so I can do a much needed preservation of the premier issue of Ahoy! magazine (January, 1984). I must have read this mag 50 times as a kid, and it definitely shows. Update 04/23/09, 2:30am: Scanning & Editing completed. Mag has been uploaded.
-
Coming up next... The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask - Official Nintendo Player's Guide Update 01/21/09, 3:00am: Scanning & Editing completed. Mag has been uploaded.
-
Electronic Games (July 1983) has finally been completed. By request, next up is Issue 90 of Compute! (November 1987): Update 01/19/09, 7:00am: Scanning & Editing completed. Mag has been uploaded.
-
I have this magazine. It's not for sale but I can scan it for you after I finish editing the current magazine I'm working on. I was on hiatus for a bit due to having too many things on my plate but I should have some free time to get this done. I should be able to do it pretty quickly and then I can start on the official Banjo Kazooie Guide. Here's a little taste
-
My first would have been Adventure on the 2600 back in 1980 (ugh!). Although the first true RPG would have probably been Ultima III: Exodus on the C64.
-
Next up is the July 83 issue of Electronic Games. After this I'll scan in the Majora's Mask Player's Guide. Update 01/15/09, 1:30am: Scanning & Editing completed. Mag has been uploaded.

That's pretty much how I did it. I wasn't aware that the rectangular crop could be set to a fixed size so that was definitely a good tidbit to know. I appreciate the help!
-
Unfortunately pretty much every page needs to be rotated. I have been using the horizontal and vertical line tools to do crops. I had no idea the horiz and vert crop tools existed until I read an earlier post here (which I think was yours). Thanks for the cropping tip, it's working great.
-
I've learned a lot reading some of the older posts here - especially the tip of rotating using the ruler tool. That is saving me a tremendous amount of time. What I need help with is to have Photoshop go through a folder of images and crop to a specified width (or height). Now obviously I know how to do this for an individual image. I was also able to create an action to do it, but it kept doing it to the same image - I couldn't figure out how to get PS to go into a folder and apply that action to all the images in that folder. Can anyone give me a hand? Edit: One thing I forgot to mention is that I want the images saved losslessly (preferably PNG, but BMP, TIFF, or PSG would also be fine).
-
Yeah, I was thinking about manually cropping the bottom of each image and then running a script to crop the tops of all the images to a uniform height. Unfortunately it's easier said than done because I need to find the image that needs the most cropping as the lowest common denominator. Then I plan to do the same with the spine edge of the page (finding the page that needs the most cropping and cropping the rest of the pages to the same width). The reason I wanted to do it this way was so that when the pages are all scaled down to 1600 pix wide the text is consistently the same size from page to page. I had noticed from scanning a book a while ago that if I just cropped each page individually to slightly different sizes then the text differed slightly in size from page to page after it was scaled. As I was playing with some of the pages last night I'm still undecided as to whether to straighten the pages. Most pages are not 100% straight, but I'm pretty certain it's due to the actual printing because the tops and bottoms of the page are straight and I scanned with the edge of the page (not the spine edge) against the edge of the platen so that edge is also straight. I plan on running a couple of test scans tonight with the page in the middle of the platen and straighten (via the ruler tool on PS) it to see how much more cropping work would need to be done. With the few I tested yesterday straightening them only requires rotating by .3 degrees so I'm not sure it's worth it...

I'm going to resize them down to 1600. I'm keeping the original (full size) PNG's on a back-up HD. I'm sure they'll be needed again sometime in the future as monitor resolutions increase. Actually it's not dust - these were quick and dirty test crops I did (the originals are still uncropped) and that page looks like it has a very small piece missing at the top left corner. Most likely this was done at the printers since I only opened this thing a couple of times before. I'm still figuring out a work flow in Photoshop to make sure the pages are all cropped uniformly but retain as much of the pages as possible. I'm looking for the absolute best quality I can get as I'm only going to be doing it once so any suggestions are definitely welcome. I really love my Epson 4490 - it's a great scanner for the price.
-
Was just playing around editing and thought I'd show a few samples. Any constructive crits are welcome. These are all 1600 pixels wide:

I have Issue 9 (May 1999) through Issue 22 (June 2000 - the last issue) of PCXL. Would you happen to have issues 1 through 8?

Here's all the stuff that I eventually plan to scan. Mags that have "???" listed for the month do not have the month printed anywhere on or in the magazine and could not be discerned. Some of these mags may not be scanned anytime in the near future as they are very wide and would not fit on a standard scanner (Amiga World, Amiga Format, Next Generation, etc). If you have any Electronic Games or Electronic Fun/Computer Fun issues that aren't listed and you want them scanned please let me know. Nintendo Power: (Nintendo of America, Inc.) Phillyman, if you PM me where to ship them I'll send them off. I'm just happy they'll get preserved. As I was digging through some of my Magazine Holders I see that I do still have some issues of PSM that are taking up the unused space in my Next Generation collection so the magazines wouldn't bend. If someone is willing to scan them please let me know and I'll ship them. The issues are from 47 (July 2001) through 59 (June 2002). Just as a preview to the stuff I plan on scanning I have: Large set of Electronic Games / Computer Fun (was renamed before it ceased being published - Late 70's, early 80's console mag) Complete collection of Amiga World (First issue to last) Almost complete collection of Amiga Computing / Amazing Computing (was renamed before it ceased being published - missing a few issues) Large collection of Compute Gazette Large collection of Compute Large collection of NextGen 3D0 Magazine (I think the full set, but may be missing a few) Bunch of misc Commodore / Amiga magazines (Transactor, Antic, Amiga Format, Ahoy, C= Magazine, etc) Hopefully I'll be able to complete this project but it's a hell of a lot of magazines... It doesn't help that I'm a bit of a perfectionist. I started to do this once before but wasn't happy with how they were turning out so I stopped - but that was with an older scanner. I'm using an Epson 4490 Photo now and being that I'm going to debind the magazines to get the best scan I want the scans to be of a high enough quality that 15 years from now it will still be considered great.

I have these: Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask Banjo Tooie I plan on scanning them relatively soon and uploading them (all in Mint condition - until I massacre them to scan them ha). I know I have Banjo Kazooie around somewhere but can't find it at the moment. This should probably go in a separate post, but I have a years worth of Nintendo Power (Issue 115 through 126) that I got free when I pre-ordered Zelda: OoT from Nintendo. If someone would like them (Phillyman?) just say the word and I'll ship them out to be scanned. Only one of these issues is currently scanned so if you don't plan on scanning them then please don't ask. As it is I have many hundreds of classic game / computing magazines to scan and I would rather donate these Nintendo Power's to someone else to scan. It's a shame that before this site existed I threw away about 5-6 years of PSM magazines (every month from the first issue until they switched to PS2)... I just didn't have the room to store them any longer. With my current mags I need to scan them because I am tired of having them take up so much space, as well as they are getting more yellow by the year (for the old mags from the early 80's).
