With so many games in my collection I define retro a little differently. To me it means anything before the NES, stuff I won't typically play. I use classic to describe anything between NES to DC because I do play those once in a while. (E-day has a good point there.) PS2, GBA, and GC are recent gen, and of course Wii, DS, and PS3 are current gen.

Years ago I found a box of about 50 Atari games for $40. Some doubles but most of the games I didn't have. One other time I found an Odyssey 2 and a bunch of games, forget what I paid but I do recall having to find another AC adapter. Other than that garage sales are always hit or miss. Game or two here and there. It's been years since I went looking as I usually have to work weekends. I also think most people who have games know it's better to sell them on Ebay. That's where I find my deals.

Do You Have A Backlog Of Video Games To Play?
DPsx7 replied to Phillyman's topic in Current Generation Video Gaming!
I could top that if I went beyond my 3 latest consoles. I've limited myself to just PS2, PS3, and Wii because I can't have too many consoles hooked up at once and I'd truly be overwhelmed if I had even more choices. As it is I've cut out a few GC games I bought used and a number of PSP games I never played (they won't run on 1.50). Then there's all the Saturn, NES, SNES, DC, and a couple N64 titles I bought as part of lots on Ebay back when I was rebuilding my collection. I make it a point to only buy what I play and I've at least tried the games to make sure they work, but there's a considerable amount of 'back' backlog that would require several months of vacation to thin out. -

Pssh. I collect games so I'm always watching out for sales. I only buy what I intend to play though. Anyway I have over 40 games that are unplayed between my PS2, PS3, and Wii. I think there's a few more on PC, maybe 10 on DS and a large handful of PSP games (stopped using it once the updates became too frequent and as a result never played half the games). Some big name games too including MGS4, GTA4, Madworld, Punchout, and so on. I'll get to them sometime. -
What Retro Consoles & Handhelds Do You Still Own?
DPsx7 replied to Phillyman's topic in Retro Video Gaming!
Most of them? Around 30. Besides playing the occasional NES or SNES game on my PC I really don't play them often. I'm way too backed up on PS2, PS3, and Wii games to find time to replay classics. There are a handful on SNES and PS1 I'd like to go through again someday. Plus a number of old games I never finished which I might want to complete. Actionmax Atari 2600 Commodore 128 Colecovision Dreamcast Nin DS GBA SP GC Genesis Intellivision MAME PC (built myself for emulators) N64 NES Odyssey 2 Radio Shack TRS-80 and 2 other old computers I forget the names to. PC Gamegear Gameboy GBA Nomad PS1 PS2 PS3 PSP Saturn SNES Twilight Zone pinball machine Virtual Boy Wii -
I bought an adapter to use actual NES and SNES controllers on my PC. I'm not opposed to playing them through emulators. I mean you still need to beat the levels, the only thing save states do (provided you don't abuse them by saving every minute) is let you save and come back, a luxury we have now for most games. Plus if our consoles aren't in the best shape and there's potential for the game to mess up at any time, emulation prevents that too. Thanks to this I was able to complete several games including Blaster Master, Metal Gear 2, Mike Tyson's Punch Out, Double Dragon, Kid Icarus, Lolo, and a few more. I intend to finish Battletoads one of these days too. I do have all these games and more, reaching various stages back when I played them on the NES. Now they're safely packed away and I can finish these games on my own time.

Same as my online name - DPsx7. But I can't go online because I haven't updated since 2.60 and my trick isn't working anymore.

Wow, and this is for real. Rofl. Clearly it was meant just for this purpose - to get people talking. I mean there's no other excuse I can think of for such an odd bundle.

I hope that sales of the 2D versions are enough of a clue that we want those kinds of games. 3D is not required for a game to be good. If not maybe a petition or two would tell them to stop trying to reinvent franchises in 3D and messing the games up when they could have put out a much cheaper, properly made 2D version and done much better. I bought all the DS Metroids and Castlevanias. BC:Rearmed and MM9 were also instant purchases. Likewise with the new Mario game for Wii (not Galaxy, the other one). It would be really nice to find out they canned these fan projects due to a previously unannounced game in development.

I was desperate for some games on PSN and when I heard about this the videos looked cool. I heard a reference saying it's like UT mixed with Contra so I had to have it. And it was a GREAT surprise, awesome game. I played it for a couple weeks until I had my fill then had to move on. I hope a patch comes along so I have a reason to jump back into it. And before I left I was in the top 10 boot camp scores, no idea if I'm still up that high. I also want Infamous. Demo was good but I don't know if the game will work. I haven't updated my PS3 past 2.6 because I'm tired of the hassle and BS features. Stardust is a great shooter, if you like that one try Blast Factor. As well as Soldner X or Astro Tripper.
-
I still have the NES game. Never beat it, got stuck on the final area.

This won't sell. It's foolish to put such a high price because all you're doing is paying Ebay. People shop there for discounts, not inflated goods. I also hate sealed games. They're meant to be played. All my games are opened and used but in otherwise great or better shape. I see little point in spending that kind of money just to sit a game on a shelf for 10 years.

The only good thing about HD is that the prices of SD sets dropped a lot. My TV hasn't broken yet but if and when it does go I can probably find a new set for like $50. All I can say is from what I've seen there are far more negatives than positives. And being they still cost $1000+ I don't see the point.
-
People keep saying that but the only use HD has is for movies and sports. Neither of which I watch. I've seen HD in stores and didn't want it, and all the complaints that it makes games look like crap aren't going to change my mind.
-
I'd rather keep the consoles and pass on the HDTV. They aren't worth the price yet. Right now for me the PS3 is the only thing HD capable and HD isn't even required for it.

Initial Thoughts On Punch Out! *edited*
DPsx7 replied to Thor's topic in Current Generation Video Gaming!
I was thinking as much on Kid Icarus. After putting him in Smash they almost need to create a new game and that would be their surprise announcement if there's no new Mario, Zelda, or Metroid. Never heard that about Starfox. Hopefully someone can make a decent sequel. Yeah, for whatever reason that series just doesn't make it here. I liked the SNES one and wouldn't mind another. Nin is crazy not to bring it to the US. I thought the Paper and M&L games were good. Not very difficult but good. So either that or more like 7 Stars, both are fine for me. I wouldn't expect a new Mario right away unless they go DS. 2D Metroid, oh yeah. DS is getting a Zelda game and I'm sure a new Wii one has to be in the works. -

I was thinking more like a new Mario RPG, Kid Icarus, Donkey Kong, Kirby (2D), F-Zero, StarFox, Earthbound, or Startropics depending on who owns that. -
I collect too but I limit myself to consoles with games I want to play. Nomad is an ok choice if you want a portable Gen. The rest, in agreement with others, aren't that hot. A PS3 will run nowhere near that much. You can get the console on Dell.com for near $300 when their specials are running. Games can be had for much less if you shop around or purchase used. Don't even get me started on backlog. I have a lot of classics I haven't finished and lots of games I collected but haven't played. When it comes to my current backlog I have 15 PS2 games (some of which I don't know that I'll ever get into), 14 Wii games, 24 PS3 games, and at least 11 DS games. More titles are coming soon too I'll want to pick up. The way I see it is I'll never have a dry spell during the year, I'll get to all the games in due time. Of course this means certain games wait a while. I just beat Mario Galaxy this past Xmas along with Zelda Phantom Hourglass, and I have yet to start GTA4 and MGS4. FFX2 has been on my PS2 stack for a number of years, I can't get into RPG's for some reason right now. I think I'd rather work through more shorter games first.

I liked all of Nin's past titles so I was glad to hear this one was making a comeback. I decided to get it when I saw Amazon had a launch special for $40 new. I think it arrives tomorrow. Now if we can get a few more of their past games that would be excellent. -
Yup, more than likely. The cover says 'ultimate RPG issue' and it's indeed #32. I don't know if it's scanned but I do have the mag. I have the whole PSM set save for the first 7 or so.

Those cakes looks great. But for me it's not worth getting married for one.

Steam Weekend Deal Weekend Of 4/25/09
DPsx7 replied to triverse's topic in Current Generation Video Gaming!
Nope, won't allow the Steam virus on my PC again. And since I don't play FPS's without a M/KB that ruins the chances of trying the console version. Oh well. Portal kinda looked neat. -
I could understand if they were paying for it. But if you're the one paying them for repairs then I always questioned why it would matter if it was opened. I don't mean this in a bad way, but fortunately none of my 30 consoles have failed in a way I could not fix so I've no experience with warranty services and tech support lines. This might be a long shot too, but have you tried booting the PS3 without a HDD installed? I have no idea if it will act like a PC and at least boot up to a point so you can say 'yeah, this isn't what the roadblock was'. Unfortunately that's the only thing you can do, if it were a PC you'd add the other components back in one at a time until you find the problem. At the least try connecting the drive to your PC and see if anything happens. It would be nice if you could get your data off the drive that way.
-
Ah, okie dokey. I don't know much about it honestly and just assumed that was the only yellow light on the system. I also wasn't sure where it was stopping exactly, whether the recovery menu or swapping to an uncorrupted drive would help. Yeah, but you're already out of warranty. Since you might have to pay anyway why should they care if it was opened? As far as I know they don't even service the units. They just check them in and send out a refurb'ed console. I'm just saying it would be something I would argue about as the fans clearly suck in dust and opening it is the only proper way to clean the fans and heatsinks. If we knew overheating was the main cause of these failures I'd just say forget the warranty and open it. With a good cleaning you might not ever need the warranty service. Once you get a working console that is, I'm aware it's a little late for the current situation... Oh well, I tried. Wish there were better results.
-
Any mass-produced item is bound to have a few units break down. PS3's fail nowhere near the 360's one third failure rate. I have a 60 that's still working fine, but I've been trying to keep the vents clean and I didn't install the latest update after reading about all the problems. (Yes, I can still get online. Hehe.) If it still somewhat turns on, did you try the recovery console? I've read reports that say restoring the defaults or whatever options there are helped fix some PS3's. Since the yellow light indicates HDD activity it's possible that simply replacing it will help. You'll have to find a way to get yuor saves off the other drive if possible, but you'll save $150 on repairs. If you had swapped the drive I'd suggest to try with the original drive first and if needed ship the console with that one rather than the drive holding your data.I wonder if they'll replace it if you open it just to clean it. Like a PC you cannot get everything from the outside. They have to understand that. If you're out of warranty it's going to cost you anyway so ya might as well try, right? That's how I fixed my launch day PS2 when it had a temporary DRE. Just opened it and cleaned the inside.
